POLLITZER, M.D. Division of Epidemiology, World Health Organization Manuscript received in April 1952 RODENTS AND LAGOMORPHA Reviewing in 1928 the then rather limited knowledge available concerning the occurrence and importance of plague in rodents other than the common rats and mice, Jorge 129 felt justified in drawing a clear-cut distinction between the pandemic type of plague introduced into human settlements and houses all over the world by the " domestic " rats and mice, and " peste selvatique ", which is dangerous for man only when he invades the remote endemic foci populated by wild rodents. Although Jorge's concept was accepted, some discussion arose regarding the appropriateness of the term " peste selvatique" or, as Stallybrass 282 and Wu Lien-teh 318 translated it, " selvatic plague ". It was pointed out by Meyer 194 that, on etymological grounds, the name " sylvatic plague " would be preferable, and this term was widely used until POzzO 238 and Hoekenga 105 doubted, and Girard 82 denied, its adequacy on the grounds that the word " sylvatic" implied that the rodents concerned lived in forests, whereas that was rarely the case. Girard therefore advocated the reversion to the expression "wild-rodent plague" which was used before the publication of Jorge's study-a proposal it has seemed advisable to accept for the present studies. Much more important than the difficulty of adopting an adequate nomenclature is that of distinguishing between rat and wild-rodent plague- a distinction which is no longer as clear-cut as Jorge was entitled to assume. -

This study investigated the ectoparasites of the Nile Rat, Arvicanthis niloticus in Shendi area, River Nile State, Sudan. Eighty nine A. niloticus were collected for the first time from the horticultural fields of Shendi, between January to June 2018, and their entire fur was combed thoroughly, using a fine-tooth comb. Any removed ectoparasites were relaxed, mounted and examined under a microscope for morphological identification. Forty two (47.2%) of the collected rats was found infested, with an overall mean intensity of 13.4 (range 2–67) ectoparasites per an infested rat; 10 different species of ectoparasites were identified, including: 2 species of flea – Xenopsylla cheopis , Leptopsylla segnis ; 3 species of louse – Polyplax spinulosa , P. abyssinica , P. serrata ; a species of tick – Rhipicephalus sp.; 4 species of mite – Laelaps agilis , L. nuttalli , Ornitonyssus bacoti , Dermanyssuss gallinae . The most prevalent ectoparasite found was the flea Xenopsylla cheopis , 23.6%, followed by the mite Laelaps nuttalli , 10.1%, while the least was the mite Ornitonyssus bacoti , 1.1%. Significantly higher prevalence and intensity of infestation was found among male rats. -

According to the few data available for this species, we hypothesized that levels of hematologic and serum chemistry analytes would not differ significantly between clinically normal male and female sand rats. Data analysis revealed several significant differences in hematologic parameters between male and female sand rats but none for serum biochemistry analytes. The following hematologic parameters were greater in male than in female sand rats: RBC count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell hemoglobin content, and percentage monocytes. Red cell distribution width, hemoglobin distribution width, mean platelet volume, and percentage lymphocytes were greater in female than in male sand rats. The sex of adult sand rats is a source of variation that must be considered in terms of clinical and research data. The data presented here likely will prove useful in the veterinary medical management of sand rat colonies and provide baseline hematologic and serum chemistry analyte information for researchers wishing to use this species. There was little phase accumulation along the ossicles. Our results suggested that the mouse ossicles moved almost as a rigid body. Based on these 1-dimensional measurements, the malleuseincus-complex primarily rotated around the anatomical axis passing through the gonial termination of the anterior malleus and the short process of the incus, but secondary motions were also present. -

ABSTRACT Objective: To examine how bush meat trading processes could be adapted as a conduit for tackling the threatening disappearance of wildlife resources from their habitat in Nigeria. Methodology and results: Bush meat trade species in Makurdi metropolis were identified, and their sources and channels of trade and profitability determined through participatory market survey techniques. Applying a multistage sampling technique, 179 bush meat traders were identified and their trading activities monitored between February and August, 2010. Data were analysed on Excel and SPSS 14.0 software version. Fourteen bush meat species obtained from protected areas in Bauchi, Cross-River and Taraba states; over 300km away from the metropolis, were identified and 6074 dry bush meat carcasses were traded over the study period. The bush meat trade, channelling from primary suppliers through middlemen to the ultimate consumers was profitable. Conclusions and application of findings: Bush meat is widely consumed in Makurdi metropolis, and the numerous bush meat carcasses traded depicts the existent exploitation pressure on wildlife; and threat to their sustainability. -

A Rat (Murinae) distinguished by its rather slender, not very thick skull with nasals narrow and long, supraorbital region of skull normal, crests very slightly marked, brain-case medium, anteorbital width reduced, orbital plate about half the height of the muzzle and with anterior border not concave, incisive foramina long reaching the tooth-row, bullae rather large. Ungrooved incisors lightly pro• odont showing a subapical notch, teeth-row short, teeth generally small and reduced especially third molar. First molar longer than broad, second molar about as broad as long: M1 longer than M2 + M3, anterior lamina of M1 not reduced. Limbs and hind feet very short. Tail short (shorter than body without head). Fur thick, but not very harsh or bristly, not showing any body stripe in the known species. Neanthomys shares with the Aethomys Group the character of the 5th digit of the anterior feet reaching the base of the 4th and the 5th digit of the hind feet longer than the great toe. Acta Theriologica 43: 263-270. The reproductive behaviour of Tatera indica cuvieri (Waterhouse, 1838) has been evaluated in detail. It involves 1 to 4 series, with each series composed of mounts, intromissions, and ending up with ejaculation. Quantitative measures of the copulatory behavioural variables indicate significant difference across the 4 series. While intro- mission duration and thrust frequency progressively increased across the 4 series, significant decrease was observed regarding postejaculatory interval. After the final ejaculation, the male resorted to a state of continued copulatory activity, referred to as postejaculatory copulation (PEC). Higher levels of copulatory activity are observed during this phase as evidenced by increases in total number of intromissions, duration of intromissions and thrust frequency. Further, the postejaculatory copulation is of considerable significance in inducing pregnancy in females, the chance of pregnancy being higher if the female is subjected to PEC. The aim of this study is to carry out a descriptive investigation into the most relevant features of the sand rat eye. Results: Light microscopic observations revealed that the eye of Psammomys obesus diurnal species, appears similar to that of others rodent with characteristic mammalian organization. The eye was formed by the three distinct layers typical in vertebrates: fibrous tunic (sclera and cornea); vascular tunic (Iris, Ciliary body, Choroid); nervous tunic (retina). Three chambers of fluid fundamentals in maintaining the eyeball’s normal size and shape: Anterior chamber (between cornea and iris), Posterior chamber (between iris, zonule fibers and lens) and the Vitreous chamber (between the lens and the retina) The first two chambers are filled with aqueous humor whereas the vitreous chamber is filled with a more viscous fluid, the vitreous humor. These fluids are made up of 99.9% water. However, the main features, related to life style and arid environment, are the egg-shaped lens, the heavy pigmentation of the middle layer and an extensive folding of ciliary processes, thus developing a large surface area, for ultrafiltration and active fluid transport, this being the actual site of aqueous production. -
