It is important that you share this information with your parents. Included in this handbook you will find information on policies and guidelines that maintain a safe learning environment. Textbooks and necessary school supplies are furnished by the school district. Students are expected to take proper care of books and return them at the end of the year. If books are not returned or have been damaged, the student will be required to make restitution. 2. Daily announcements concerning school activities are posted on PowerSchool/Parent Portal and in the GHS office window. They are also read over the public address system each morning. Students are held responsible for having heard or read the announcements. 3. Property damage is a serious offense. A student who does any damage to school property will be required to make restitution for the amount of the damage done. Gaylord Community Schools cannot tolerate willful destruction of school property and students will be disciplined accordingly. 4. Lockers: Students will be assigned a school locker and will be held responsible for its contents and condition. No tape, wallpaper or other decor may be applied. Students may not change lockers. Lockers are school property and are subject to searches, including canine searches at anytime. The privacy rights of the students shall be respected regarding any items that are not against school policy. 5. Visitors are not allowed at Gaylord High School during the school day unless they are attending a school sponsored event and they are approved by administration. All guests should check in at the office. 6. Withdrawal from school must be confirmed by the parent or guardian. The student must be sure they settle all charges and fees, turn their books into the high school office and clean out their locker. Upon notification from the next school he/she enrolls in, the school office will send a transcript of their records to their new school. If a student misses 10 consecutive days without an excuse, they will be considered dropped from school. 7. Work permits are required by the State of Michigan for all minors under the age of 18 who hold jobs. Information about permits and work permits themselves may be obtained outside the main office. 8. Injuries should be reported to the instructor in charge of the student at the time. In the event of serious illness or injury, the student's parents will be notified. It is necessary that we have the name, address, telephone number and physician that you would like us to contact in case of an emergency. 9. Illness at school will be taken care of by calling the parents or guardian. Students are sent home only after contact with parents/guardian has been made. Other relatives can serve in this capacity if they are on the emergency card. 10. Fines and fees owed to the school must be paid in full. Seniors may have restrictions placed upon them if outstanding debt is not paid. 11. Disobedience: School staff is acting "in loco parentis," which means they are allowed, by law, to direct a student as would a parent. This applies to all staff, not just teachers, assigned to a student if given a reasonable direction by a staff member, the student is expected to comply. 12. Information regarding deceased students: The school will contact the parents/guardians in a timely manner regarding personal items of deceased student. Communication and options for the family will be discussed in terms of Graduation ceremony and yearbook remembrance. 13. Lunch: There will be NO ala-carte, breakfast or lunch charging for students. 4 14. Closed Campus: All GHS students are to remain in the building during school hours. Students are not allowed to leave the building unless a parent contacts the main office. Parents are not allowed to excuse their student to go out to lunch by themselves or with another student. 15. Medication: Students are not allowed to carry any medication at school including over the counter medications such as Motrin. If a student needs to take medication at school, parents must complete a medication form available in the office. GHS will keep the medication locked and make it available to the student when required. ATTENDANCE ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS Regular attendance of a student is a prime responsibility of both the student and the parent/guardian. Studies of student progress in school show a high correlation between a student's consistent attendance and success in school. Regular attendance at school is vitally important to each student because it affects progress in academics and in the development of attitudes and habits for later life. As a group effort, parents, teachers, counselors and administrators will emphasize the value of being in class every day. Finally, as it is sometimes impossible to make up the exact work done in class, students and parents should be aware that any absence might adversely affect the student's progress. ATTENDANCE POLICY Each student will be expected to maintain a high level of attendance in each course, per semester. For credit to be earned, a student is expected to be in attendance each scheduled day of the school year receiving a passing grade in the class. More than twelve (12) "hours" of absence (excused or unexcused) in a course is considered excessive. A student with more than twelve (12) "hours" of absence in a course may be subject to make up missed time or work in accordance with the GHS Attendance Policy. ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES A student will have the opportunity to explain his/her absence(s). The parents are to contact the school regarding the reason for the absence. Parents may call 24hrs a day 7days a week - 731-0969. If parents are calling outside the hours of 7:30am-3:00pm, a message may be left at extension 1202. In order to be considered “excused”,
