Alan Broadbent provides the tasteful orchestrations on several of the tunes. Krall sounds most at home in the great American songbook, and you’ll find plenty of gems here by Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Irving Berlin, and Johnny Mercer. But there are some real surprises and discoveries as well, such as Krall’s hypnotic take on “Sway,” by Norman Gimbel, Pablo Rodriguez and Luís Molina. With its unhurried pace, it’s the longest cut on the album, and maybe the longest cut on any of Krall’s previous albums. It doesn’t feel like it, though, as the orchestra lulls the listener into a state of sun-drenched bliss. One of the things I also love about Krall is the imperfection of her voice. Back on “What Are You Doing New Years Eve?” on “Christmas Songs,” her voice cracks as she nears the end of the first chorus, underlining the song’s coy pleas. Here, Krall strains a bit to hit the notes on “Isn’t it Romantic,” though it’s never a matter of pitch—sometimes it just sounds as if her voice is about to give out, wistfully. The arrangements on the disc, by Krall, are splendid. On more than a few tunes, a jaunty violin (Stuart Duncan) is added to the ensemble. The orchestra never overpowers the small group. For lovers of great standards, rendered exquisitely, this is a must-have. http://tpr.org/post/diana-krall-her-best-turn-quiet#stream/0 Page 2 of 5 Diana Krall At Her Best On 'Turn Up The Quiet' | Texas Public Radio 5/10/17, 11:59 AM Diana Krall - Blue Skies (Audio) TAGS: JAZZ (/TERM/JAZZ) ! Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates.

E.ON presents: 10. VeszprémFest 16-20 July 20 13 16 July 17 July 18 July 19 July 20 July Diana Marcus Paco Nigel Craig Krall Miller de Lucía Kennedy David Main sponsor veszpremfest.hu Veszprem Castle In case of rain: Veszprem Arena Diana Krall Diana Krall's extraordinary new album Glad Rag Doll (2012, Verve Records) is an exhilarating 16 July and adventurous exploration of new sounds, new instrumentation and new musicians. It stars a singer and piano player, filled with mischief, humour and a renewed sense of tenderness and intimacy. "We all just went in there as if the songs were written yesterday. I didn't want to make a period piece or nostalgia record", said Krall. In fact, these are songs that Krall has spent a lifetime contemplating. Both her childhood home and her current address are stacked with 78rpm records and song folios filled with precious and unpolished gems, songs that have not worn out their lustre from repetition. If any of these songs could be identified as "20's or 30's music," then they are 20's or 30's songs as imagined for the 21st Century. The same could be said for a startling rendition of the Doc Pomus classic, Lonely Avenue , first cut in the 1950s. The contemplative, contemporary reading of the old Gene Austin recording of Let It Rain finds a sympathetic echo in Krall's exquisite rendition of Buddy and Julie Miller's more recent ballad of spiritual longing, Wide River To Cross . Krall was born in 1964 in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.
