It stars a singer and piano player, filled with mischief, humour and a renewed sense of tenderness and intimacy. "We all just went in there as if the songs were written yesterday. I didn't want to make a period piece or nostalgia record", said Krall. In fact, these are songs that Krall has spent a lifetime contemplating. Both her childhood home and her current address are stacked with 78rpm records and song folios filled with precious and unpolished gems, songs that have not worn out their lustre from repetition. If any of these songs could be identified as "20's or 30's music," then they are 20's or 30's songs as imagined for the 21st Century. The same could be said for a startling rendition of the Doc Pomus classic, Lonely Avenue , first cut in the 1950s. The contemplative, contemporary reading of the old Gene Austin recording of Let It Rain finds a sympathetic echo in Krall's exquisite rendition of Buddy and Julie Miller's more recent ballad of spiritual longing, Wide River To Cross . Krall was born in 1964 in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Her father played piano at home and her mother sang in a community choir. She was playing piano herself at the age of four and playing jazz in a local restaurant at 15. In 1999 Diana burst into the public's consciousness with her album When I Look In Your Eyes . In jazz category Diana took home the Grammy and she became the first jazz artist to be nominated fo the Album of the Year award. Diana Krall's 2009 GRAMMY® winning album, Quiet Nights , used Brazil as a musical point of reference and landed at #3 on the Billboard 200, her highest ever position on the chart and her fourth consecutive album to debut within the top 10. The Glad Rag Doll is Krall’s 11th studio album. SSales of her albums hit millions worldwide winning dozens of prizes including Three Grammys. www.dianakrall.com Collaborators: Diana Krall - piano, vocal Dennis Crouch - upright bass Stuart Duncan - guitar, violin Patrick Warren - keyboards Aram Bajakian - guitar Karriem Riggins - drums VIDEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it1NaXrIN9I Marcus Miller An album entitled Renaissance is long overdue for the widely acclaimed „Renaissance Man” Marcus Miller. In among the most enviable careers in music, Miller is a two-time Grammy-winner and the 17 July composer/producer of ten critically acclaimed and genre-defying albums. Renaissance finds Miller offering up an especially emotive 13-song collection that includes eight richly inspired original compositions that swing from a tip of the porkpie to the CTI Records sound of the `70s ( CEE-TEE-EYE ) to an introspective and ultimately hope-filled rumination about the island off the coast of Dakar in Africa known as Gorée (Go-ray ). Renaissance also includes five cover songs that canvas works by soul-jazz culture band WAR, new wave-soul starlet Janelle Monáe, New York jazz dignitary Weldon Irvine, Brazilian musical ambassador Ivan Lins and Christian composer Luther “Mano” Hanes. Marcus was born in 1959 and raised in a musical family that includes his father, church organist, choir director and his mother, jazz pianist. By 13, Marcus was proficient on clarinet, piano and bass guitar, and already writing songs. Two years later he was working regularly in New York City, eventually playing bass and writing music for jazz flutist Bobbi Humphrey and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith. Miller soon became a top call session musician, gracing well over 500 albums, recording with musicians and in countries around the globe - from Frank Sinatra and Elton John to Bill Withers and LL Cool J. As a film music pro, Miller rose from writing the go-go party classic Da Butt for Spike Lee's "School Daze" to becoming the go-to composer for 20+ films. As a producer, writer and player, he was the last primary collaborator of jazz legend Miles Davis, contributing the composition and album Tutu to the canon of contemporary jazz music. www.marcusmiller.com Collaborators: Marcus Miller - bass, bass clarinet Alex Han - saxophone Sean Jones - trumpet Adam Agati - guitar Brett Williams - piano, keyboards Louis Cato - drums VIDEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXYjo5-UaTY Paco de Lucía Is the greatest living legend of Flamenco music today. He performs with his group 18 July compositions from the last 30 years. He starts the performance solo – one of the most beautiful moments of the concert. The Maestro and his guitar: from the beginning of the first note magic fills the hall. He plays his way right into the heart of the audience. He plays songs like Antonia (dedicated to his daughter), Entre dos Aguas , Zyriab where you can almost touch the love he has for this music. In 1965 he recorded his first LP, Dos Guitarras Flamencas . In 1975, with his album Fuente y Caudal , Paco began his dialogues with improvisation, and with the Rumba Entre Dos Aguas , he transformed the Flamenco guitar from a marginal instrument into a worldwide phenomenon. Simply by introducing the cajon drum, the bass and percussion, he lays the foundation of the current Flamenco idiom; Almoraima , on which he definitively surpasses the sounds produced by his masters, Niño Ricardo and Sabicas; Siroco , the greatest melodic and harmonious homage to Flamenco there is, and Luzía , fruit of a dark decade of absence, are just some of the landmarks that demonstrate the revolutionary genius, intuition and talent that are Paco de Lucía’s trademark. His openness towards other music styles like in the collaboration with John McLaughlin and Al di Meola is combined with his creativity and wish to bring Flamenco to the modern world. He is and remains a Flamenco guitarist but his wish to integrate new instruments and styles into traditional Flamenco is a gift that has influenced a complete generation of Spanish musicians. Francisco Sánchez Gómez was born in Algeciras, Cadiz, on December 21, 1947. Ever since the day when, as a five year old, he corrected his father, Antonio Sánchez, (a professional guitarist) as to the rhythm of a flourish, Paco’s dedication to the guitar has been exhaustive. 26 albums released, hundreds of awards and the consensus of the critics regarding the spectacular musical revolution he has instigated, all go towards making him the universal artist that he is. www.pacodelucia.org Collaborators: Paco de Lucía - guitar Piraña - percussion Antonio Sanchez - 2nd guitar Rubio - vocal Antonio Serrano - key, harmonica David de Jacoba - vocal Alain Pèrez - bass Farruco - dance VIDEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYYDdn1rRKs The Nigel Kennedy Quintet The violin - FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE with special guest Roby Lakatos 19 July For over twenty-five years, Nigel Kennedy has been acknowledged as one of the world's leading violin virtuosos and is, without doubt, the most important violinist Britain has ever seen. His virtuoso technique, unique talent and mass appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire. He is the best selling classical violinist of all time. Nigel Kennedy has attracted an enormous amount of worldwide media attention throughout an extraordinary career and his international television appearances have been wide and varied. He has given public and private performances for members of the British royal family and has also been presented with many awards (Male Artist of the Year at the UK Brit Awards, Vivement Dimanche Gold Award, numerous Echo Awards, Grammy Awards; Gold Rose of Montreux etc). His first landmark recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling classical work of all time. It sold in excess of 2 million copies and the album remained top of the UK classical charts for almost two years. His passion for jazz resulted in albums. The Nigel Kennedy Quintet ’s 2009 release, named in typically idiosyncratic fashion, A Very Nice Album , marked a typically bold excursion into non-classical repertoire. His earlier Bluenote album focussed on interpreting compositions from past masters of the jazz repertoire but, for A Very Nice Album , Kennedy stepped to the fore as composer as well as improviser. 2010 saw the release of the latest Nigel Kennedy Quintet release of mainly original Kennedy compositions, entitled SHHH! Nigel Kennedy is a passionate Aston Villa fan and attends as many games as his schedule allows. He has one son, is married to Polish lawyer, Agnieszka, and they divide their time between homes in the UK and Poland. As well as several customised 5 string electric violins, Nigel Kennedy plays a 1732 instrument by the great violin maker, Carlo Bergonzi of Cremona. www.nigel-kennedy.net Collaborators: Nigel Kennedy - violin Piotr Wyleżoł - keyboard Adam Kowalewski - bass Tomasz Grzegorski - saxophone Krzysztof Dziedzic - drums VIDEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSNz7LPz7yE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gO4mYN92Cg Craig David From a UK Garage pioneer to a mainstream multi-million seller, Craig David is so much more than your average artist.
