Dear Brothersand Sistersin Christ.

Soonour diocesewill be taking up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal (CHMA), and I askthat you prayerfully considerparticipating. This appealsupports the dioceseshere in our own country that struggleto make endsmeet and serveall of the needsof their parishioners. It is through your generositythat many churchesare able to keeptheir doors openand provide essentialpastoral services.

The Dioceseof Laredo is locatedin southernTexas, along the Texas-Mexicoborder. Many in this dioceselive on the marginsof society, either as immigrantsor as peopleliving in poverty, and it is a challengefor the dioceseto keepup with the needsof its people. With your contributionsto the CHMA, the diocesereaches out to someof the most marginalized people- thosein prison. Many detaineesare returning to the Catholic faith and are in need of God's mercy. Your gifts provide liturgical and educationalsupplies, help priestsoffer the Eucharistand other sacraments, and supportvolunteers' and ministers' outreachto over 10,000men and women in detentionfacilities. Your generositybrings Christ's messageof love, compassion, and reconciliationto this often forgottenpopulation.

Your supportof this appealmakes a differencein the lives of our brothersand sisters right herein the .Please prayerfully considerhow you can supportthe appeal this year. To learn more aboutthe appealand thosewho benefit from it, visit www.usccb.ors/home-missions.

Saturday, March 18, 2017 10 AM to 4 PM Assembly Hall 901 Orange Grove Road Charleston, SC 29407

Registration (payable at the door) is $15 and includes course materials and lunch. After you complete the training, we humbly ask for two hours of your time per month “on the sidewalk” at the abortion facility as either a prayer partner or a counselor.

Pre-registration is required. To enroll, please email [email protected] or call Anne at 843.437.3190.

The 2017 Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1, for Latin-rite Catholics.

In a particular way during Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that "remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit."

"Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ."-- Pope Francis, Message for Lent 2017. . .

Take inspiration for your Lenten journey from prayer and to the reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms. The fasting that all do together on Fridays is but a sign of the daily Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities. Likewise, the giving of alms is some effort to share this world equally—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection.

In Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics.

The key to fruitful observance of these practices is to recognize their link to baptismal renewal. We are called not just to abstain from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We recall those waters in which we were baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.

Lectio Divina for Lent

On these pages, you will find a variety of suggestions and resources to help you "give up," "take up," and "lift up" during this Lent and to embrace your baptismal commitment.

Catholics are also encouraged to make going to confession a significant part of their spiritual lives during Lent. The U.S. Bishops' statement, "God's Gift of Forgiveness: The Pastoral Exhortation on the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation" can be distributed and shared in parishes. Dioceses are encouraged to make the sacrament available often during Lent and to use these resources to promote participation. We also have resources to help individuals who have not been to confession in a while "rediscover" the sacrament. http://usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/lent/index.cfm

May your Lenten journey be a blessed time for you to grow in intimacy with the Lord!

Peace and all good,

Sister Kathy Adamski, OSF Manager of Pastoral Formation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Vacation Bible School program puts emphasis on Catholic faith This summer, children can ride the Queen of Heaven Express with Catholic Kidz Camp. This innovative vacation bible school program, developed by Growing with the Saints and Family Rosary, connects the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary with today’s youth in a fun and spiritually moving way. It is now available for order by directors of religious education, parish priests, catechists and others who instruct children.

This year’s program, entitled “Tracking Mary: Mysteries & Messages,” features the Queen of Heaven Express – a special holy train traveling to the faraway places around the globe visited by Our Blessed Mother: Lourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe, England and Ireland. Children discover how Mary brings us closer to Jesus through the power of the Rosary. Mysteries and Messages are revealed at each stop.

Catholic Kidz Camp is more than a vacation bible school. The program focuses on Catholic identity and teaches the Bible from the Catholic perspective. It introduces saints as faith heroes and heroines while encouraging family prayer through a daily Rosary.

Growing with Saints developed this special vacation bible school and partnered with Family Rosary to offer the program to Catholics everywhere. Family Rosary was founded by Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., also known as the “Rosary Priest.” The Sainthood candidate is remembered for saying, “The Family That Prays Together Stays Together.”

The 2017 Catholic Kidz Camp is a complete program with everything religious educators need to lead a five-day vacation bible school. It includes:  10 separate camp leader guides  Clipart and resource CD  2 music CDs and action song DVD  4 grade-level Bible and faith formation lessons  4 Mary’s Messages storybooks  “The Day the Sun Danced” DVD  Catholic Kidz Crafts  Skits and themed snack suggestions  Service project  Take-home Family Catechesis

The program retails for $269 and can be ordered online at www.GrowingWithTheSaints.com or by calling 864-599-5697 or 864-580-0237.

Growing with the Saints, Inc. was founded in 2001 in response to parents, religious educators and priests who were searching for a completely Catholic vacation bible school. The company wrote and published a new program specifically for Catholics. Growing with the Saints is committed to handing down the Catholic faith received from Jesus and the apostles.

Family Rosary, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, is a member ministry of Holy Cross Family Ministries. Faithful to Mary, the Mother of God, Family Rosary encourages family prayer, especially the Rosary. Its founder, Father Peyton, was one of the most influential American Catholic priests of the 20th century and encouraged millions of people to pray the Rosary daily.

In the spirit of its founder, Servant of God Patrick Peyton, Holy Cross Family Ministries helps families pray together, especially the Rosary. For more information, call 800-299-7729 or visit www.FamilyRosary.org.

“I am grateful that the children finally experienced a Vacation Bible School that truly had a Catholic curriculum. The children and the teachers loved it all week long! I had one mom text me on Wednesday evening saying that her two boys were running through the house screaming, ‘One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic!’ She was overjoyed!” Monique Haskins, Elementary Faith Formation St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church Newnan, Ga.

“Camp was the best ever! The children loved the theme and everything connected to it. It definitely was Catholic and a lot of good theology was shared by the teachers. Are you being called?

Diaconate Formation Program In communion with the bishop and priests, deacons are ordained for a distinct ministry, which is indicated by their name: they are ordained for service. They function in all three area’s of the Church’s life: transmission of the Word, celebrating of the sacraments, and in the community’s active love. The deacon, therefore, is more properly defined in terms of who he is rather than of what he does. He is a visible sign of the Church's call to “diakonia” — service. He is both servant and sacrament.
