Build relationships with each other for a stronger movement. Provide information that will help us better advocate for a comprehensive solution to genocide and mass atrocities in Sudan. Encourage discussion and planning on “what‘s next“ for activists that will make a Acknowledgments The Sudan Emergency Action Summit is organized by Act for Sudan. Act for Sudan is an alliance of 75 organizations that represent American citizen activists and Sudanese U.S. residents who advocate for an end to genocide and mass atrocities in Sudan. Act for Sudan is dedicated to advocacy that is directly informed by the situation on the ground and by Sudanese people who urgently seek protection, justice, and peace. We will be joined by knowledgable Sudanese experts on these issues, several of whom are them- selves exiled from Sudan because of their work on behalf of human rights. In the second part of the workshop, we will talk about the international organizations which report on these violations and discuss how to organize both on-line and in-person write for rights events to help protect and free prisoners of conscience in Sudan. We’re collecting one million handmade bones to install on the National Mall on June 8, 2013 as a visual petition. The Bone Making Workshops will provide information about the project and the event on the National Mall. We’ll be crafting bones out of clay that will be used in the June installation. Upholding Responsibility to Protect When States Fail Room 5 Facilitated by Mark Hackett Workshop focuses on historical examples of individualized R2P actions and expanding the tools activists can use to protect civilians when states refuse to do so. Voices from Sudan There are 10 unique Voices from Sudan sessions. In these workshops you will make personal connections to Sudanese leaders in the community and understand the human crises of Sudan as they share their personal journeys. "This is a major epidemic," said Mr Ken Isaacs, vice president of Samaritan's Purse, a US-based medical charity. "People are not giving it the credibility that it deserves," he said. The US Peace Corps said that it was temporarily removing 340 volunteers working in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea after its American staff contracted the deadly virus. Another US citizen and a top doctor from Sierra Leone have died. As Ebola spreads it attack on health staff treating infected patients, global mandates are now fearing to extend help and cure. This underscores the gravity of the evolving crisis in a poor corner of West Africa where government authorities and international health workers have struggled to bring the deadly outbreak under control. Mr Bruce Johnson, president of SIM USA, a Charlotte, NC, missionary group, one of the groups helping Ebola patients in Liberia, said that though non-essential workers will be removed, staff needed to run its Ebola treatment centers will stay. He added that few centers have stopped admitting new patients due to increased spread of the virus. He added that instability and insecurity in African villages add to the misery of Ebola as "healthcare workers do not feel safe." Another organization, Samaritan's Purse said that it was curtailing its operations in Liberia, due to increased threat from locals.

The outbreak is the first in West Africa and has caused an unprecedented number of cases and deaths. The outbreak is continuing to spread in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia (the “affected countries”); it has been contained in Nigeria and Senegal, and has been detected in Mali. As of October 22, 2014, more than 10,000 people have contracted EVD, more than half of whom have died. Until October 2014, no secondary EVD cases had occurred outside of Africa. That month, health workers in Spain and the United States contracted EVD cases while providing care for Ebola patients. Other factors make this outbreak unique, including • its introduction into West Africa; • multi-country outbreaks occurring simultaneously; • disease transmission within urban areas; and • an unprecedented scale and pace of transmission. In the aggregate, between 1976, when Ebola was first identified, through 2012, there were 2,387 cases, including 1,590 deaths, all in Central and East Africa. The number of Ebola cases in this outbreak is four times higher than the combined total of all prior outbreaks, and the number of cases is doubling monthly. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have projected an exponential increase in cases.
