NORFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL has made a Temporary Traffic Order affecting the C768 road from Saham Toney to Ashill from a point 255 metres north of its junctions with the C119 Pages Lane/Bullockshed Lane to a point 85 metres south of its junction with the C119 Pages Lane/Bullockshed Lane in the PARISH OF SAHAM TONEY because of carriageway resurfacing works. The road will be temporarily closed (except for access) between 19:00 and 06:00 hours from 26th January 2021 to 28th January 2021 for the duration of the works, expected to be 2 nights within the period. Alternative route is via: C768 Road From Saham Toney To Ashill/ Watton Road/ Swaffham Road/ Watton Road/ The Street/ Swaffham Road/ Road From South Pickenham To Swaffham/ South Pickenham Road/ Watton Road, A1065 Brandon Road, B1108 Watton Road/ Brandon Road, C768 Swaffham Road/ Richmond Road/ Road From Saham Toney To Ashill and vice versa (South Pickenham, Ashill, Saham Toney, Little Cressingham, Watton, Cockley Cley, Great Cressingham, Swaffham, Ickburgh, Hilborough, North Pickenham). (If necessary the restriction could run for a maximum period of 18 months from the date of the Order). Penalty: £1000 maximum fine on conviction and/or endorsement for contravention. Descendants of William Falke Generation 1 1 1. WILLIAM FALKE was born about 1390 in Pr. Worlingham, Suffolk, England. He died between 20 Feb-05 Mar 1455 in Great Worlingham, Suffolk, England. He married AGNES. Notes for William Falke: William Falke of Worlingham, Suffolk, England is the first known ancestor of the line leading to the Fauxes who are found in large numbers in the area between Thetford and Norwich in Norfolk County from the mid 1500s. It is probably unproductive to speculate about earlier generations. The most that can be said is that it is probable that the family originated in the area and simply disappears into the mists of Medieval time. It is tempting to seek continuity back to Norman times. The first recorded instance of the name Falc or variant is in the "Ship Lists" of the Conquest in 1066. Here one finds, in the Wace contemporary list, "e cil qui est siree d'Alnou". This village is Al(u)nou - le - Faucon, on the Orne River south of Caen near Argentan. The first recorded Seigneur here is "Fulk I d'Aunou" (see Elizabeth Van Houts, 'Wace as Historian', in "The History of the Norman People", Glyn S. Burgess (Ed.), 2004, Boydell Press, Woodbridge, Suffolk, p.L). The Domesday Book of 1086 lists only one Falc, an under tennant at Bradford, Suffolk - although there are more individuals with the name Fulk (Falk and Fulk and their derivatives Falkes and Folkes are frequently used for the same individual). The British Archives site also shows 13th Century examples where the name is for example Robert Le Falke (1284), and others where Henry Faulkes is also known as Henry fliius Falcasiis, and Henry FitzFalk (1307).

SWAFFHAM IN THE GREAT WAR THE TOWN Overview William and Elizabeth The years leading up to World War 1 had been difficult. Many of the men were labourers either on the roads, farms or around the town. It is noticeable from the records that so many of the young men born around the 1880s to 1900s were in the town in 1901 and then disappeared to other places before 1911. Even those who stayed until enlisting often didn’t return when they were demobbed. Money was short, food was basic, transport was by bike, horse, train or on foot. Housing in many cases was either sparse or of poor quality. Labour was short on the fields and a hotly discussed issue over the war years was whether boys over 13 should stay at school or work on the land. Some boys joined the navy at age 12 but most of the young lads became errand boys for grocers’ businesses when they left school. The population of Swaffham was over 3000 in 1911 and the number of men serving in the war runs at around 600, so most families would have had a close relative in the military forces. There were families who lost several sons; those whose sons remained unscathed in World War I and then fell in World War II. Families where fathers and sons enlisted; those whose sons and husbands returned wounded. Very often the women were left to manage the businesses their husbands left or had been compelled to go to war. There are many instances of exemption appeals, many of which were disallowed.

Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office This list summarises the Norfolk Record Office’s (NRO’s) holdings of parish (Church of England) registers and of transcripts and other copies of them. Parish Registers The NRO holds registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns of marriage for most parishes in the Diocese of Norwich (including Suffolk parishes in and near Lowestoft in the deanery of Lothingland) and part of the Diocese of Ely in south-west Norfolk (parishes in the deanery of Fincham and Feltwell). Some Norfolk parish records remain in the churches, especially more recent registers, which may be still in use. In the extreme west of the county, records for parishes in the deanery of Wisbech Lynn Marshland are deposited in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, whilst Welney parish records are at the Cambridgeshire Record Office. The covering dates of registers in the following list do not conceal any gaps of more than ten years; for the populous urban parishes (such as Great Yarmouth) smaller gaps are indicated. Whenever microfiche or microfilm copies are available they must be used in place of the original registers, some of which are unfit for production. A few parish registers have been digitally photographed and the images are available on computers in the NRO's searchroom. The digital images were produced as a result of partnership projects with other groups and organizations, so we are not able to supply copies of whole registers (either as hard copies or on CD or in any other digital format), although in most cases we have permission to provide printout copies of individual entries.
