Well, I am not so sure. Perhaps it is not a good reflection on my ability to be patient but I always look for the shortest queue at the supermarket T checkout. Then I compare the speed that it goes down with all the others. I don’t know why, the difference can only be a few minutes and what would I have done with those minutes anyway? A few days ago I heard a Russian joke which went back to the days when Leonid Brezhnev was President of the Soviet Union. This was a time of shortages and long queues for even the basic things of life. The story goes that a man had been in a queue for four hours with it hardly moving. Eventually he broke and told the people around him he had had enough. He was going to kill Brezhnev. Everyone around him agreed that this was a good course of action and sent him on his way with their blessing. Two hours later he returned. The queue had hardly moved so he joined it at the same place which he had left. Did you kill Brezhnev, they all asked? No, the man replied with a sigh: the queue to kill him was even longer than this one! The Israelites had been waiting for the Messiah from, well, from the beginning of history. Then He came and, despite all their waiting, most of them failed to recognise Him and they killed Him – so all that waiting was for nothing. At least that’s what the disciples thought that first Easter. So much promise, so much potential, all thrown away by the people and their leaders. How could it happen? Then slowly and reluctantly those who had been closest to Him came to realise that something extraordinary and unique in the whole history of mankind had happened. Jesus had been raised from the dead . Not just that but, as a corollary, they could trust all that He said and taught. They were so certain that they worked for the rest of their lives passing on the good news of reconciliation with God, the forgiveness for sin, the promise of eternal life and the gift of the Holy Spirit for all who followed Him. They did not do this for reward. Not in this life anyway. They lived in poverty and were persecuted for their faith; they were killed and suffered the worst cruelty that the Roman Empire could think of, all because they were sure. Would they have done this for a lie? No! No sane person would. So, if they knew the story and promises of Jesus were absolutely true and were prepared to die for it ,can we afford to sit back in the comfort of our homes and just ignore it? They taught that one day all of us will be called to account. So where do you stand this Easter? Are you standing in the queue waiting to see what will happen? Or do you accept that what the disciples taught is true; if so that there is no queue but that you will get the bargain of an eternal lifetime. With all my heart I would like to say a big thank you to all the parishioners who supported me and showed me their selfless help, kindness and generosity. I am extremely grateful to all of you for the "reflex of the heart": you reached out to me and supported me financially. It means a lot to me and I will treat it as a gesture of good will on your behalf. My physical health is far from perfect but week by week I am getting better and stronger. Unfortunately I get breathless easily and also get tired very quickly. With regards to the nearest future I am intending on staying in the UK for the time being.

    MEETING MINUTES of Alfold Parish Council held on Thursday 6th December in The Green Room, Alfold Village Hall, Alfold at 7.30pm Present: Dr J Masding (Chairman); Mr N Budd; Mr C Copus; Mrs P Mayne; Mrs B Weddell (Clerk); Three members of the public were in attendance. Apologies: Apologies had been received from Mrs B Ames, Mr K Deanus and Mr N Pidgeon. 12/135 Declarations of Interest ACTION Mr Copus declared a personal interest in the Sports Council. 12/136 Draft Precept on Waverley Borough Council for the year ending 31.3.14 including consideration of grant allocations. The Clerk circulated projected year-end figures for the current year and draft budgets for the year ending 31.3.14. The Clerk explained that it would not be possible to agree the final budget until Waverley are able to advise the effect that changes to Council Tax relief will have on the Council Tax Base and Band D equivalents, on 21st January. It is also not known whether parish councils will be capped to 2% increase without holding a referendum. The Clerk had carried over £1000 from the current year allocated for pond repairs and allocated a further £4000 in the budget for replanting the pond. This expenditure was agreed in principle. The Chairman requested that the £1500 allocated for traffic safety measures be carried forward into next year’s budget. She reported that the Cranleigh and Eastern Villages Task Group had recommended a feasibility study into the possibility of a pavement along the Dunsfold Road be carried out next year.

    FARNHAM ISOLATION HOSPITAL BRIEFING PAPER Farnham an Unhealthy Town In Victorian times great concern was expressed about the health of the nation. The government was identifying a worrying increase in infectious diseases. The Farnham area was especially backward in creating a healthy environment for its residents. The twin essentials for good health, a supply of wholesome water and the provision for the removal of human waste were far from a reality in the town and its surrounding districts. A Farnham Water Company had been set up in 1836 but, by 1884, only about 1 in 4 of the houses in the town had a piped water supply and it was not the early part of the 20th Century that the surrounding districts, including Wrecclesham, were able to access mains water. Most houses at this time were dependent upon water obtained from wells and springs, which were found both to the north and south of the town. In Farnham, for those who had no access to wells or springs, there were communal facilities in the form of the town pump or the water carrier known as ‘Old Tom’. George Sturt describes: ‘Old Tom’ ladling out water from his barrel and delivering it to customers at a penny or a halfpenny a bucket. 1 In the 1890’s the Medical Officer for the Farnham Urban Council reported at each monthly meeting on the state of the town’s health. He reported that: ‘Illnesses that beset the town at this time included Diphtheria, Typhoid, Scarlatina, Erisypelas, Scarlet Fever, Smallpox and Croup.’ 2 Farnham a Smelly Town Even in Victorian times open ditches carried human waste products of the town to the River Wey.
