2016 Utah Football Utes Announce Recruiting Class Feb. 3, 2016 UTAH FOOTBALL ANNOUNCES 2016 RECRUITS Utes sign 24 players to National Letters of Intent SALT LAKE CITY—The Utah football program took advantage of its 10-3, Pac-12 South Division co- championship season by adding 24 recruits on National Signing Day. Eighteen of the scholarships were awarded to high school prospects and six players were signed out of the junior college ranks. “We feel we were able to put together an outstanding recruiting class,” said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. “While quarterback and linebacker were our primary focus, we addressed our needs across the board. Our assistant coaches did an outstanding job targeting the right guys and we were able to win many head-to-head battles for some highly sought after recruits.” Utah signed recruits from seven states with California (7), Utah (6) and Florida (5) leading the way. Also contributing to the count were Hawaii (2), Arizona (1), Texas (1), Washington (1) and Australia (1). The biggest position gains came on the offensive and defensive lines, with fi ve players each, and at linebacker with four. Six players are already enrolled and participating in offseason conditioning with the team: offensive linemen Jake Grant and Scott Peck; quarterbacks Troy Williams and Tyler Huntley; wide receiver Demari Simpkins and punter Mitch Wishnowsky. Two other members of this year’s class will join the team this summer after returning from church missions: defensive tackles Howard Pututau and Pita Tonga initially signed in 2014. To date, this annual event has raised $750,000 - enough for the Food Bank to provide the equivalent of 3 million meals. This year’s Honorary Chair, Rams Receiver Cooper Kupp, along with other players such as Jared Goff, Van Jefferson, Terrell Burgess and John Wolford rallied the community to virtually come together to raise funds to benefit the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in their mission to combat hunger in Los Angeles. “I’m thankful to be able to help those in need and to be surrounded by other people that want to help,” said Kupp. “It’s extremely gratifying to be able to give back, especially during such a challenging year. It’s been heartwarming and unifying to be part of a community that wants to take care of each other.” Longtime supporter of the LA Regional Food Bank, Rossoblu and Superfine Pizza Chef Steve Samson, served as the virtual event’s lead chef. “We have all experienced an unprecedented and difficult year.
