Summer School starts June 8th. Beginning June 7th, the MS/HS/Activities Camps Summer School Office will be relocat- ed to the Career Center at Fargo South High School (1840 15th Ave S). The summer school office will be closed for July 4th Break; July 1-5. Summer School Registration Website Summer school information, as well as registration procedures, can be found at www.fargosummerschool.com. Students need to discuss summer school registration plans with their high school guidance counselor. * The grade level a student will be entering for the upcoming school year is the designated grade for all summer school classes and camps. 3 Fargo Public Schools 2021 Summer School Programs The Fargo Public School District Summer School Program is an extension of the regular school program that provides an opportunity for students: to reinforce skills learned during the school year to explore new areas of interest not available during the regular school year to complete regular course work for credit towards graduation requirements Courses for High School Credit (Grades 9-12) @ South High Options: Hybrid (M-Th on-campus) or Virtual daily-Zoom learning First Semester Classes (17 days): June 8-30 Second Semester Classes (17 days): July 6-July 28 PE Classes (34 days): June 8-July 28 @ North, South, & Davies 4th of July Vacation: No classes July 1-5 Middle School (Grades 7-8) Options: Hybrid (M-Th on campus) or Virtual daily-Zoom learning Targeted Math and Reading (students register with their school counselors) Explorations: Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies * First Semester Classes (17 days): June 8-30 * Second Semester Classes (17 days): July 6-July 28 * 8:00-11:30 Registration: Each middle school will be sending students a google form. Trollwood Performing Arts Please visit www.trollwood.org for the excellent opportunities at Trollwood. 4 Summer School HS Student Handbook p.1 ATTENDANCE: Required class meeting times Summer school covers a large amount of material in a short amount of time. Regular attendance is required to meet state and FPS requirements. Students are expected to attend all class meetings and to participate in all activities required by curriculum/teacher. Students must be present for the full class on the last day of the semester. Virtual Academy VA SS (Daily Monday through Friday Required Zoom Meeting @ 12:30—2:00) Hybrid On-Campus SS (Monday through Thursday on-campus required meeting @ 8:30—11:00) Physical Education SS (Monday through Thursday for hybrid on-campus periods A & B and for VA) STIC Time(s) = Student + Teacher Intervention & Collaboration Time STIC times are built into the daily/semester schedule; students can access the teacher for help/ collaboration or the teacher may direct/set appointments for a student or group of students. * STIC open times with no specific teacher-directed appointment aren’t considered to be required class meeting times. * STIC appointments directed by the teacher are considered to be required class meeting times. ATTENDANCE: Expectations for Academic Classes Since life sometimes presents unforeseen obstacles, students are permitted to miss a maximum of two scheduled class meetings and are required to complete the make-up as directed by the teacher. BE ON TIME! All tardies exceeding 5 minutes will be rounded up to the next half hour. Tardy time will count towards the two class meetings absence maximum. Students are allowed up to 3 tardies per semester. On the 4th tardy, the student will be dropped from the course and receive a withdraw/fail. If a student exceeds the two-class meeting absence maximum, the student will be dropped from the course and will receive a withdraw/fail. ATTENDANCE: Expectations for Physical Education Classes All SS Phy-ed courses are scheduled to meet Monday—Thursday through both academic semesters with 28 class meetings and 6 virtual Fridays. Since life sometimes presents unforeseen obstacles, students are permitted to miss a maximum of four scheduled class meetings and are required to com- plete the make-up as directed by the teacher. BE ON TIME! All tardies exceeding 5 minutes will be rounded up to the next half hour. Tardy time will count towards the four-class meetings absence maximum. Students are allowed up to 5 tardies. On the 6th tardy, the student will be dropped from the PE course and will receive a withdraw/fail. If a student exceeds the four-class meetings absence maximum, the student will be dropped from the PE course and will receive a withdraw/fail. ATTENDANCE: Absence Reporting Absences can be reported directly to the teacher by parent email or phone call. Please include the student in the email so the teacher can direct necessary make-up to the student. Absences can be reported to summer school attendance @ 701-446-2028 The summer school office will send a daily Black Board call regarding student attendance. ATTENDANCE: CLOSED CAMPUS Once students arrive, students will not be allowed to leave the building without permission from ad- ministration. If a student leaves the building without permission, he/she will be asked to leave for the day and that time will count in the maximum allowable absence time. STUDENT BEHAVIOR Summer school differs markedly from the regular school year in that participation of students is en- tirely voluntary. Any student, who, through tardiness, absenteeism, poor work habits or classroom disturbance, distracts from the summer school experience instead of adding to it, will be dropped from the course and be sent home. We are all here by choice. 5 Summer School HS Student Handbook p.2 PARKING at South HS All students who drive are to park in the North & South parking lots only. Bicycles are to be parked in the bike racks and locked at the North or South entrances. DRESS The Fargo School District takes pride in the appearance of our students. Student dress reflects the quality of school, conduct, and work. The school district is responsible for seeing that student attire does not interfere with the health or safety of any student, that student attire does not contribute to a hostile or intimidating atmosphere for any student, and that dress code enforcement does not rein- force or increase marginalization or oppression of any protected group.     2014 Vice-Presidential Candidates The North Dakota High School Coaches Association’s Executive Committee has made nomi- nations for balloting for the Association’s Vice President. The balloting will be conducted at the An- nual Coaches Convention that will be held in Fargo, July 29th through August 1st. The two candidates will be Paul Lean, who is presently boys’ track & field head coach at Fargo Davies High School. The second candidate is Ron Metz, who serves as girls’ basketball head coach at Bismarck Century High School. Paul Lean Ronald Metz Paul Lean is a graduate of Fargo South High School, with his undergraduate degree and graduate degree from North Dakota State University. He has taught and coached at Connell Middle School in San Antonio, TX; New Rockford High School; Fargo Discovery Junior High School, Fargo South High School and, presently, at Fargo Davies High School. He has coached volleyball, girls’ basketball, soccer, tennis, boys’ cross-country and boys’ track & field. His present position is assis- tant boys’ cross-country and head boys’ track & field coach. As a head coach, Coach Lean has coached his boys’ track & field teams to 136 victories in 185 meets. He has led his boys’ cross-country teams to 13 victories in 27 meets. Paul has been named East Region Boys’ Track & Field Coach of the Year twice and NDHSCA State Boys’ Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2003. He has served as NDHSCA Convention audio/visual equipment coordinator when the convention has been held in Fargo. Lean has coached his boys’ track & field teams to state championships twice (2000 as an as- sistant coach and 2003 as a head coach).

It was challenging in so many ways. Yet, I am confident as I reflect on the past year there were so many great things, we can all be proud of. With that being said, it is a little crazy to be crafting our welcome back letter for the August Newsletter and to remind you all the First day of school is Wednesday, August 25th beginning at Troy Cody, Principal 8:45 am. Our office staff is working hard in preparation for another successful school year. Each year we get the opportunity to build upon the prior year’s successes and make the appropriate changes where needed for our future. The excitement and energy students will bring as they walk into our building for another year can also be found in all our staff here at Davies. Davies High School’s motto of “Honor, Integrity, and the Pursuit of Excellence” will continue to be at the forefront as we build upon the existing foundation that has been created by our students, faculty, Dr. Dale Miller and staff. Our school environment and culture will continue to be positive and one that our Assistant Principal community, students, and staff can be very proud of.

Yoder is the first Gatorade North Dakota Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year to be chosen from Dickinson High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Yoder as North Dakota’s best high school boys cross country runner. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year award to be announced in February, Yoder joins an elite alumni association of past state award- winners in 12 sports, including Lukas Verzbicas (2010-11, 2009-10 Carl Sandburg High School, Orland Park, Ill.), Megan Goethals (2009-10, Rochester High School, Rochester Hills, Mich.), Jordan Hasay (2008-09, Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School, San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Chris Derrick (2007-08, Neuqua Valley High School, Naperville, Ill.). The 5-foot-8, 140-pound junior raced to the Class A individual state championship this past season with a time of 15:21.
