Davies Newsletter DAVIES HIGH SCHOOL EAGLES REPORT Honor - Integrity – Pursuit of Excellence Volume 12, Issue 1 Web Site: www.fargo.k12.nd.us August 2021-22 Davies High School Administrators To our entire Davies HS Community: Let me begin by thanking each family for your patience and support as our school year last was certainly one that we never could have predicted. It was challenging in so many ways. Yet, I am confident as I reflect on the past year there were so many great things, we can all be proud of. With that being said, it is a little crazy to be crafting our welcome back letter for the August Newsletter and to remind you all the First day of school is Wednesday, August 25th beginning at Troy Cody, Principal 8:45 am. Our office staff is working hard in preparation for another successful school year. Each year we get the opportunity to build upon the prior year’s successes and make the appropriate changes where needed for our future. The excitement and energy students will bring as they walk into our building for another year can also be found in all our staff here at Davies. Davies High School’s motto of “Honor, Integrity, and the Pursuit of Excellence” will continue to be at the forefront as we build upon the existing foundation that has been created by our students, faculty, Dr. Dale Miller and staff. Our school environment and culture will continue to be positive and one that our Assistant Principal community, students, and staff can be very proud of. We will encourage our students to “Work Hard, Be yourself, and Do the right thing!” Our academic standards will be challenging. We will continue to motivate our students to reach for excellence as they prepare for their individual future endeavors. Our school will focus on preparing our students for their future and not our past. This coming Fall our building will be home to a little over 1350 students, so together as a partnership, we have a large task in front of us. Encourage your child to get involved in school activities. When they become involved at school, it gets them connected, builds their confidence, and gives them the ability to grow in their individual development and meet new friends. A reminder that all of the Fargo Public Schools’ registrations are now on-line. If you haven’t done so, you will need to complete that on-line registration for your student(s). This is a requirement of ALL students, not just our new families. Each year all parents need to re-submit registration forms and update their PowerSchool information. This will be the only newsletter that will be mailed to your home. Any and all future newsletters can Lenny Ohlhauser be found online on our school’s homepage. You will see the same format you used for registration in previous years by going into PowerSchool to access the forms, just follow the tutorial. You may change your address, telephone number, pay your student’s fees or update contact information etc. all ON-LINE ONLINE REGISTRATION Starting July 12, parents/guardians of all Fargo Public Schools students have been able to complete their children’s annual registration forms and make fee payments online. Access to these online forms and fee payments will be through the Fargo Schools PowerSchool site. In addition to online registration forms, PowerSchool gives parents access to their child’s attendance records and lunch account balance, and access to their middle and high school child’s daily assignments and current grades. Please complete this PowerSchool process NOW to ensure your student has the necessary forms completed to begin the school year and that all the information for your child/children is up to date. Please go to https://fargo.ps.state.nd.us/public/ PowerSchool link and follow the directions at the top. Families who do not have PowerSchool set up and registration forms completed prior to their child’s back-to-school orientation session in August will be asked to do so at the school during orientation. Middle and high school students will not receive their class schedule and/or school-issued laptop until a parent PowerSchool account is set up and registration forms have been completed. If you do not have access to the internet at home, you may access the internet via computer kiosks available at your child’s school during open summer hours. You are strongly encouraged to call the school office prior to stopping in to verify that the building is open. Davies’s office telephone # is 446-5600. ORIENTATION/REGISTRATION Freshman Orientation: We would like to invite you and your student to attend an orientation session August 17 & 18. During your assigned orientation session, you should first report to the assigned orientation space for a brief information session with an administrator and counselor. After that, you will be able to pick up your student’s PLD, have your picture taken, and take a self-guided tour. Letters were sent with your orientation schedule the first week of August. If you did not receive a letter, you may call 446-5616 or 446-5617, Davies’ registrars to see when your appointment is scheduled. Grades 10-12 Orientation: August 24: • Schedules are being mailed out with this newsletter. There is link to an online schedule change form. Please see the packet for details. • Pictures: Scherling Photography will have 2 cameras set up all day, from 8-4 pm and again during Back-to- School night 4:00 pm through 6:00 pm. • ID cards will be delivered to the student’s period 2 class on the first day of school. Freshman-Juniors will have the picture taken at orientation. Senior ID cards will be using last year’s picture. • PLD’s: You will be able to pick up your PLD during orientation/registration. NEW CREDIT CARD PROCESSING FEES Beginning July 1, 2021, Fargo Public Schools implemented a $1.00 convenience fee on credit and debit card transactions, due to increasing processing costs. Payments made over $200 will incur a 3.99% processing fee for charges not related to student registration, food services, or student activities. This charge is collected through SchoolPay and used to offset processing costs. Read more about why this processing fee is being implemented here. LUNCH PROGRAM Basic school lunches will be provided ‘free of charge’ again this year. Extras will need to be paid out of your school lunch account. Money can placed in your students lunch account through your PowerSchool account. Breakfast is served daily from 7:30 – 10:00 am. Students will be assigned to one of three lunch runs. Lunch #1: 11:15 – 11:35 Lunch #2: 12:05 – 12:25 Lunch #3: 12:55 – 1:15 REPORTING ABSENCES If your student is going to be absent because of an illness, out of town, appointment, etc., please call the Attendance Secretaries, Kim Martin (A-J) at 446-5611 or Tabitha Jahnke (K-Z) at 446-5610.

    2014 Vice-Presidential Candidates The North Dakota High School Coaches Association’s Executive Committee has made nomi- nations for balloting for the Association’s Vice President. The balloting will be conducted at the An- nual Coaches Convention that will be held in Fargo, July 29th through August 1st. The two candidates will be Paul Lean, who is presently boys’ track & field head coach at Fargo Davies High School. The second candidate is Ron Metz, who serves as girls’ basketball head coach at Bismarck Century High School. Paul Lean Ronald Metz Paul Lean is a graduate of Fargo South High School, with his undergraduate degree and graduate degree from North Dakota State University. He has taught and coached at Connell Middle School in San Antonio, TX; New Rockford High School; Fargo Discovery Junior High School, Fargo South High School and, presently, at Fargo Davies High School. He has coached volleyball, girls’ basketball, soccer, tennis, boys’ cross-country and boys’ track & field. His present position is assis- tant boys’ cross-country and head boys’ track & field coach. As a head coach, Coach Lean has coached his boys’ track & field teams to 136 victories in 185 meets. He has led his boys’ cross-country teams to 13 victories in 27 meets. Paul has been named East Region Boys’ Track & Field Coach of the Year twice and NDHSCA State Boys’ Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2003. He has served as NDHSCA Convention audio/visual equipment coordinator when the convention has been held in Fargo. Lean has coached his boys’ track & field teams to state championships twice (2000 as an as- sistant coach and 2003 as a head coach).

The past few months have been interesting to say the very least. Yoder is the first Gatorade North Dakota Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year to be chosen from Dickinson High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Yoder as North Dakota’s best high school boys cross country runner. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year award to be announced in February, Yoder joins an elite alumni association of past state award- winners in 12 sports, including Lukas Verzbicas (2010-11, 2009-10 Carl Sandburg High School, Orland Park, Ill.), Megan Goethals (2009-10, Rochester High School, Rochester Hills, Mich.), Jordan Hasay (2008-09, Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School, San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Chris Derrick (2007-08, Neuqua Valley High School, Naperville, Ill.). The 5-foot-8, 140-pound junior raced to the Class A individual state championship this past season with a time of 15:21.
