Stop Out v Napier City Rovers - Hutt Park We welcomed Bill Robertson and his Napier City Rovers side to Hutt Park, looking to bounce back from a disappointing result against Miramar Rangers the previous week. A few injuries and absentees meant that we were a few numbers down but the strength of the squad was evident with a very strong matchday 14 being selected.

The first half was well contested, we lined up in a comfortable in the game and was confident we new system and whilst we kept possession well could close out the result. Unfortunately it is not at times and defended strongly we didn’t carry always that straight forward and with 10 to go enough of a threat especially on the counter Napier were fortunate to score direct from a free attack. kick to level it up at 2-2.

There were a few half chances either way but the At this point we could have gone one of two ways, most important moment was after 25 minutes let our frustration get to us and draw or even lose when a small grab of the shoulder in the box was the game or shake it off and fight our way back awarded as a penalty and Napier converted to in front. Feeling absolutely pumped for football tonight! Been a long two years since ruining my knee so will be a great feeling to get back out on that pitch tonight wearing the red and gold.

Stop Out Men’s Third Team with a 2-1 win against - Memorial Park

The Fourth team took a strong lineup into a late kick-off against a strong Karori team, bolstered by the return to Stop Out colours of fan favorite Sam Chan. After a strong start to the match, we took the lead around 20 minutes in thanks to a Mark Meo thunderbolt from 25 yards.

Despite a couple of patches where we allowed our intensity to slip, we took a 1-0 lead into half time on the back of a sound defensive display, and some top drawer keeping from Crispy.

The second half started in even fashion, with two well matched teams battling for dominance in midfield. 10 minutes into the second half Karori caught us a little short on the counter attack and leveled things at 1-1, which was probably a fair reflection of the game up til that point.

Eventually, our marginally superior fitness and skill level began to show through, and we took the lead again through a piece of Sam Chan magic - a great 1-2 play to create space and a ripping finish into the top corner from 25 yards.

We dug deep, tightened up at the back and showed some great character to hang on for a 2-1 win and a very valuable three points. OUR NEW SIGNINGS

Once tomorrow’s Auckland City v Team Wellington match is over we will complete the tarsfers of Cole Peverley, James McPeake and Justin Gulley.

Both Cole and Justin return to the club. Justin was in the squad that day as was Steve Gulely! Cole played as a teenager with 4 games for the club in 2008. And Justin has been stuck on 49 Jame’s is a local lad and attended Hutt appearances for a few years since his first team International Boys’ School and is well known by debut as a 15 year old. many at the club. Napier City Rovers coach Bill Robertson. WHAT IS LUCK?

Luck and lucky were two words that seemed to surround the conversations about the men’s first team loss to Miramar Rangers. Voices from both Miramar and Stop Out both echoed the thought of how was it Stop Out took nothing away from the match. To quote from out last programme ‘we created multiple chances and hit the post no less than six times’. One factor MIKE BARTON might just be luck.

One definition of luck is ‘success or failure that the win was achieved by great tactical nous. apparently brought by chance rather than The winning side boasted a great goal keeper and through one’s own actions’ and another is a tremendous back four. The losing side were very ‘the accidental way things happen without physical and in the previous encounter, between being planned’. And even luck is ‘the events or the two, had dominated the midfield due to that circumstances that operate for or against an fact. So the winning manager had his team sit individual.’ back and let the other side come at them. His keep had made several great saves but no more than The other aspect is the thought of unlucky and he had done in the previous couple of matches. At that is said to be ‘having, bringing, or resulting first glance they won because of their keeper and from bad luck.’ the other side not taking chances and not using possession. Second glance reveals purpose and The Mens’ Central League is reasonably tight tactics. and I guess on occasion you might only get six shots at goal in an entire match. The thought The Miramar match was an illustration of the way of having enough chances that the ‘woodwork’ luck runs, of being unlucky, and also that football struck six times is, again borrowing from the last can at times be an imperfect human endeavour programme, up in the ‘struggling to make sense where a centimetre here or a centimetre there can of’ realm. make quite a difference.

In a study in the USA participants were given a sports task to perform. At completion subjects were asked to attribute the cause of their increased or decreased performance to ability, effort, task difficulty and/or luck. The results indicated that successful outcomes were attributed to both ability and effort and that unsuccessful outcomes were attributed to a lack of ability but not a lack of effort.

Against Miramar there no lack of effort and no lack of ability but we still had an unsuccessful outcome. Surely, then, we can think of ourselves in that instance as being unlucky.

The idea of luck in sport may also just be the first response to a casual glance. In the eighties I watched a match, in England, where one team completely dominated the match only to lose by a single goal. Much of the news media coverage said that the winning side were lucky to win. Looking at the match again, and again, I could see STOP OUT PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY
