YANKS TAKE LONE CHALLENGE--The only replay review last night came from the New Yorkers and a call at the plate was overturned in the seventh inning...KC manager Ned Yost has asked for just eight reviews in Kansas City’s last 50 contests, the most recent on Sunday in Arlington on what turned out to be an inning-ending double play...Yost and the Royals have been extremely successful this year, going 20-12 in reviews, tying San Francisco’s Bruce Bochy for the most overturned calls in the Majors...on the flip side, KC’s opponents have gone 15-for-34 (44%) in replay challenges. CENTRALLY SPEAKING--The Royals resume play against the A.L. Central tonight, with this the first of six straight against their divisional brethren...KC will step out of the division again next week with three here against the Rangers and three in New York, before heading to Detroit for an important 3-game set that begins on September 8 and kicks off a race to the finish in which 16 of the last 20, including the final 13 will be within the Central...things started rough for Kansas City in intradivision play, going just 5-15 through the first 20, but on May 21 the Royals beat the White Sox which jumpstarted a stretch in which KC has gone 23-11 in the last 34 games within the Central, including wins in 10 of the last 13. ORGANIZATIONAL HONORS--In just his first season on the job, Burlington Royals General Manager Ryan Keur, has been named the Appalachian League’s Executive of the Year...as of August 24, with three home dates remaining, the Royals sit in second place in the league in attendance and are on pace to have over 40,000 fans passing through the turnstiles of Burlington Athletic Stadium for the first time since 2000...three Royals games this year have attracted more than 3,000 fans to Burlington Athletic Stadium...the average attendance of 1,242 is nearly 50% greater than the average of 836 fans the Royals drew in 2011, the year before Keur began working for the club full time. FOUR SLAMS THE DOOR--Kansas City have failed to muster more than one run in each of the back-to-back losses to Texas and New York, respectively, much less get to that coveted number of four...the Royals have posted a 59-8 record this year when scoring at least four times in a game...KC has won 18 consecutive games when plating at least four runs, the last defeat occurring in a 5-4 setback in Boston on July 18...conversely, the Royals are 13-50 when scoring three runs or fewer....dating back to the start of 2013, the Royals are an astounding 123-22 when the club scores four times or more in a game. DAVIS AMONG BASEBALL’S ELITE--Wade Davis extended his scoreless inning streak to an active big league best 22.2 with a scoreless eighth on Friday in Texas... his season ERA of 0.80 is tops in the Majors among all hurlers who have thrown at least 40.0 innings this year, just ahead of the Cardinals’ Pat Neshek at 0.81...the last run Davis allowed was on June 25th and has been the lone run surrendered in his last 44.0 innings for a 0.20 ERA dating back to April 26...since giving up two earned runs on April 5, Wade has allowed only two runs over his last 48 outings (51.0 innings) for a 0.35 ERA, while fanning 82...he has struck out at least one hitter in each of his last 16 appearances, while he nearly made it four full months without allowing an extra-base hit, but Minnesota’s Kurt Suzuki spoiled the streak with a double on July 31. THE BEST BACK END GOING--While the typical back end of the Royals’ bullpen was not employed in the last two games in Arlington, much of Kansas City’s recent success can be traced to the seventh, eighth and ninth innings thanks to the combination of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, respectively...they have combined to allow just 3 earned runs in 52.1 innings in this 24-6 span for a 0.52 ERA while fanning 55 and holding the opponents to a collective .158 average (28-for-177)...Herrera has totaled 12.2 shutout innings over KC’s last 30 games, while he has 21.0-straight scoreless frames overall, which spans his last 21 outings... the only pitcher in baseball with a longer streak is Davis, who worked a scoreless eighth Friday night and is in the midst of a 24-game streak with 22.2-straight shutout innings, which includes 15.2 since July 22...Holland is the only one of the three to be scored upon, allowing 3 earned runs in 15.2 innings (1.72 ERA) since July 22, but has converted 15 of 16 save chances, including his 14th in a row in the series-opener Friday. HOLLY HOLDS BIG LEAGUE RESCUE LEAD--Greg Holland upped his Major League leading save total to 40 on Friday, working around a two-out walk in a scoreless ninth...the last Royals pitcher to lead the A.L. in saves was Jeff Montgomery (45 in 1993), while Greg is the first to record back-to-back 40-save seasons since Dan Quisenberry did it in 1983 (45) and ‘84 (44)...Holly has made good of 40 of his 42 tries this year, including 33 of the last 34...over a longer haul, Holland has converted 80 of his last 83 attempts (96.3%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has eight more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 72) and has allowed just 14 earned runs in 101.1 innings for a 1.24 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 107-for-117 in save situations, the best save pct. at 91.5 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities...since becoming Kansas City’s full-time closer on August 1, 2012, the day after Jonathan Broxton was dealt to Cincinnati, Holland has gone 103-for-110 in save situations, the most saves in the majors while his 93.6 save pct. is the best among relievers with at least 80 save chances. RISP REWARDS--Despite going 1-for-6 last night with runners in scoring position, the Royals have still managed a big league best .325 mark (75-for-231) with runners in scoring position, 32 points better than the second place San Francisco Giants in that span...on the year, Kansas City is second only to the Tigers in hitting with runners in scoring position with a .275 season mark (Detroit at .278). SPEED THRILLS--The Royals lead the American League pack with 114 stolen bases, 21 more than the second place Yankees...Jarrod Dyson is fourth in the league with 29, followed by teammate Alcides Escobar in fifth place with 24...Lorenzo Cain reached 20 steals for the first time in his career on Sunday and ranks tied for ninth in the A.L. and Nori Aoki is tied for 19th with 15...Dyson is one theft away from becoming the first Royal since Carlos Beltran (2001-03) to record three consecutive 30-plus steal seasons...the Royals led the Majors last year in stolen bases with 153. NED’S CLIMB CONTINUES--Manager Ned Yost enters tonight with 813 career victories as a skipper, good for 75th all-time and six ahead of Oakland’s Bob Melvin, with each skippering clubs for 11 seasons...Ned is currently 10 shy of Bill Terry in 74th with 823 wins during his 10-year managerial career with the New York Giants. vs. Twins (2014) vs. Twins (career) At Home (career) Nolasco (career) Hughes (career)
