Mortal Causes begins with a description of a particularly brutal murder the shots through both Mortal Causes, both elbows, and both knees were not what killed himand one of the later killings Mortal Causes also extremely unpleasant which should make you think about firehoses in a completely new way. Yes, DI John Mortal Causes is dealing with some really nasty bad guys here. Rebus has his own way of going about conducting an investigation, but he also has to go where he is pushed and nudged. The crime suggests an IRA connexion, and points towards some Scottish nationalist groups. Rebus even gets to travel to Belfast, and sees first hand -- as he had decades earlier, in his SAS days -- what Mortal Causes violence can lead to. A second story-line -- soon enough quite clearly intertwined with the first -- has Rebus take an interest in a youth club at Pilmuir's Garibaldi Estate -- called the Gar-B -- where things look to Mortal Causes gotten completely out of hand not least because of sectarian tension. But then Gar-B -- frequently visited in the book -- generally resembles Belfast. Finally, old Rebus nemesis 'Big Ger' Cafferty comes into the picture as well: the first victim turns out Mortal Causes have been his son which practically nobody knew and he's out for revenge -- i. Cafferty is in jail when this all begins, but eventually decides a more hands-on approach is required -- meddling Rebus decidedly does not appreciate. Rebus doesn't have an easy time of it. When one of the men on the case, Inspector Ken Smylie, takes it personally as well he should that further complicates matters. And Rebus' flirtation with a lawyer despite his living with Patience are soon the cause for additional aggravation. Inevitably he admits: "Always it came Mortal Causes this, he tried to do things by the book and ended up cooking them instead. The conclusion, as so often in Rankin's novels, ends with Mortal Causes and Mortal Causes confrontations Rebus managing to find himself in mortal peril not once, but twice and catastrophe just averted -- all a bit over the top. Still, it's a decent ride for most of the way, the contrast of bleak housing estate world and Edinburgh Festival unreality that's right, all this happens during Festival season nicely done, and Rebus' juggling acts -- women, criminals, colleagues, alcohol -- as entertaining as usual. The sectarian differences and the Scottish nationalism are a bit too simply treated, but they suffice for the purposes of the novel. Rankin is ambitious here, but isn't willing to go into the necessary Mortal Causes he doesn't flesh out the issues as he begins to do in the later volumes in this series. The police procedural aspect still dominates, the sensational crimes more important than all the motives behind them though a shift in Rankin's approach is palpable, if not truly evident. Nordjord Master Thesis in English Literature ENG-3992 May 2016 Abstract. This thesis is about the theme of the Double in Ian Rankin´s two first crime novels Knots & Crosses, published in 1987, and Hide and Seek, published in 1990. My thesis statement is that Ian Rankin has developed the theme of doubling with great weaknesses since he has chosen to place the characters so closely together in both novels. Many different games are played in the novels. That is typical of the genre and for these two specific novels. Antagonists and protagonists play games with each other in order to gain information, to figure each other out in order to have the upper hand or simply to survive. The characters relate to books in different ways, but all of the important characters are in one way or another involved with books. The titles of the novels do not only reflect what the novels contain, but there are also literal and non-literal examples of how the words in the titles are used in both texts. The actions of strangulation and choking are present in the first novel as a murder method and a link between Detective John Rebus and the murderer, Gordon Reeve. In the second novel these actions are merely used as a plot device. The connection between Robert Louis Stevenson´s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is undisputable in both novels. It reiterates the importance of the theme and shows off the likeness between the characters in Rankin´s novels and the Jekyll and Hyde character.

The certainties expounded by the Church are reenacted through the figure of the rational investigator whose perspicacity never fails to uncover the perpetrator and return the world to its pre-lapsarian tranquillity. Often the villain whose wicked deeds must be brought to book is the leader of an obscure mystical sect, but otherwise religion, particularly of the mainstream variety, is noticeably absent. This has, however, recently changed. The detective, once the acme of rational thought and deductive flair—incarnated in the figure of Sherlock Holmes, for example—has now been replaced, on occasions, by investigators with overt religious beliefs. The explanation for this apparently inconsistent development is tied to the evolution of crime fiction over recent decades, in which both the model of the traditional hard-boiled detective and the genre itself have been questioned and deconstructed by a new generation of crime writers.
