The MCSC flags match the wind speeds for light, medium and heavy winds, including a black flag for too much wind, going from light shade to darker: white, yellow, then green. Dock Masters will fly the orange flag with the one of the other flags if conditions call for keeping the boats near the docks in Area A. Incoming storms, fog, or shifty winds are all concerns. Open sailing is still allowed, just in a smaller area. This past winter saw Lake Michigan freeze over more than it has in many years. Combined with the cool spring, the Lake water is staying much cooler much longer this spring. Therefore, when the warm summer air does blow in, it will meet the cool water and cause “sea smoke” or fog banks. With more foggy days expected this season, watch for the Orange flag to fly more often!
