This dissertation showed me how much parents influence their children, and I owe any and all of my successes to your love. v ABSTRACT Against the Wind: A Study on Aviation as a Female Career Choice by Bonnie Gagliardo Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study is to identify and describe the educational and social experiences that sparked the interest of female pilots as young women to pursue a career in aviation. Methodology: This qualitative phenomenological study utilized semi- structured interviews to explore the lived experiences of female pilots, to understand if there were common social and educational factors which influenced them to become interested in aviation. Using convenience sampling, eleven pilots who hold a Federal Aviation Administration Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot’s License were selected to participate in this study. Findings: The findings from this research show that exposure, influence and personality were critical factors in sparking the interests of girls to eventually pursue a career in aviation. The pilots in this study were exposed to aviation at a young age through an aviation-based event, a relevant extracurricular activity, or a friend, or family member involved in aviation. They also were positively influenced by parents, teachers, other aviators, or though media. The pilots also displayed many common personality traits including identifying as “tomboys”, the desire to make the world a better place, and being goal driven. However, the pilots also displayed a lack of confidence. Conclusions: The findings and literature expose the intertwined relationships social and educational factors have in influencing who a girl will become. Results indicated that the “spark” for aviation comes from a supportive family and educational environment, the vi opportunity to participate in aviation-based activities at a young age, and a personality not limited by traditional societal norms. Recommendations for Action: The researcher recommends that girls be exposed to aviation during their elementary school years. This should be done through engagement from the aviation industry, or anyone who holds a love of aviation. School districts must also provide opportunities to participate in activities that include hands on engagement and provide career counselors during the critical elementary school age. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television.     Season 6, Episode 4: Airstream Caravan Tukufu Zuberi: Our next story investigates the exotic travels of this vintage piece of Americana. In the years following World War II, Americans took to the open road in unprecedented numbers. A pioneering entrepreneur named Wally Byam seized on this wanderlust. He believed his aluminium-skinned Airstream trailers could be vehicles for change, transporting Americans to far away destinations, and to a new understanding of their place in the world. In 1959, he dreamt up an outlandish scheme: to ship 41 Airstreams half way around the globe for a 14,000-mile caravan from Cape Town to the pyramids of Egypt. Nearly 50 years later, Doug and Suzy Carr of Long Beach, California, think these fading numbers and decal may mean their vintage Airstream was part of this modern day wagon train. Suzy: We're hoping that it's one of forty-one Airstreams that went on a safari in 1959 and was photographed in front of the pyramids. This statement heralded a new era in Indian Air Force as soon three women cadets were selected for fighter stream who are presently posted in IAF as fighter pilots. This article presents a comprehensive review of various historical, physiological, medical and social aspects which determine entry of women in fighter flying. Materials and Method: The MedIND, Pubmed and Google Scholar databases were reviewed for articles related to gender differences in attributes required for adaptability to aerospace environment. Discussion: Various aero medical concerns related to women health and pregnancy have been discussed to highlight its effect on flight safety. Careful planning and execution can obviate most of the concern and women can perform effectively in high performance jet cockpit. Conclusion: Entry of women into a domain hitherto fore exclusive to males is likely to change the attitude of IAF and society at large towards women. Women can effectively fly high performance jet aircraft without jeopardising flight safety due to gender differences in physiology.     Women in Aviation, International Launches India Chapter Pioneers skilling and empowerment for women in Indian aviation New Delhi, December 07, 2015: On the occasion of International Civil Aviation Day, Women in Aviation, International, (WAI) a non-profit organization that skills and empowers women in the aviation industry, today announced the launch of its India Chapter at the Embassy of the United States of America. The India chapter pioneered by Ms Radha Bhatia, Chairperson, Bird Group and mentored by Ms C J Collins, Senior Representative-South Asia, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will connect, educate and empower women across all verticals in the Indian aviation and aerospace industries. “I believe that the Indian aviation sector offers immense opportunities for women to touch heights in their careers when provided with adequate guidance and support. With a firm belief to engage, educate and empower women through various initiatives to augment inclusive growth, I together with CJ Collins initiated the formation of India chapter of the Women in Aviation, International”, shared Ms Radha Bhatia, Chairperson, Bird Group. “The India chapter will provide women aspiring for a career in aviation to connect, engage and draw inspiration across all verticals such as commercial, operations, engineering, financial and human resource to achieve their dreams”.
