Abstract This volume describes the development of the life cycle maintenance costs for 212 sales—leading 1970 through 1975 passenger cars and light trucks. These costs pro- vide a data base for the Department of Transportation^ which describes the costs for parts and labor for performing both the scheduled (manufacturers recommended) and typical unscheduled (replacement of worn out parts) maintenance for each of these 212 vehicles. The actual data base is contained in Appendices E and F which are bound separately in Volumes II and III. This report also describes where the service work is performed during the vehicle life cycle. In addition, the automotive service industry has been characterized. This character- ization includes the facility (building) costs, land requirements, tools and equip- ment requirements, inventories investment costs and operating capital required to operate a service establishment. The major types of service facilities which perforir most of the commercially done repair work were characterized. These establishments are representative of the 29,600 new car dealers, 86,200 gasoline service stations, 30,650 independent repair garages, and 12,280 specialty shops in existence in 1975. The policies used by the service industry in pricing replacement parts are also presented. The report details the price discounting policies of the industry parts suppliers, including the automobile manufacturers and aftermarket parts manufac- turers, as well as those of the parts distribution system (jobbers, new car dealers, oil companies, and specialty shops). 17. ( "k;!*'' PREFACE This development and analysis of the Repair and Service Maintenance Data Base was performed for the U.S. Department of Transportation, Transportation Systems Center by the Automotive Technology Group at Arthur D. Little, Inc., under Contract Number DOT-TSC-1047 . The work was done under the guidance of Mr. Sanuel F. Powel, Ms. J. H. DeBlois, and Mr. James Kakatsakis, Technical Monitors at DOT/TSC. The Program Manager was Mr. Donald A. Hurter, assisted by Mrs. Nancy Gardella and Mr. Philip G. Gott. This is a three-volume report - Volume I presents a data base of the automobile and light truck service and repair industry and the current maintenance requirements of 212 domestic and foreign cars and light trucks through the years 1970-1975. Volume II includes the total cost summaries of Scheduled and Unscheduled Maintenance and Appendix E, Scheduled Maintenance Data Sheets. James, “they imposed a pattern. It is an original pattern, not European, not African, not a part of the American main,…but West Indian, sui generis, with no parallels anywhere else.” These lines appear in James’s 1963 essay “From Toussaint L’Ouverture to Fidel Castro,” which he appended that year to a new edition of The Black Jacobins, his seminal history of the Haitian Revolution first released in 1938. Writing at a time when the British West Indies’ attainment of independence, coincident with the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, had prompted many Caribbean politicos and intellectuals to propose that the region’s diverse territories confederate into one regional nation, James argued that those territories, no matter their divides of language and history, should be understood to share a common culture and destiny. He also argued that the peoples of the Caribbean “nation” – belonging, as they did, to societies created and shaped for centuries by their links to European powers – had a unique and special role to play, among the world’s formerly colonized peoples, in shaping the future of world civilization.
