Tiktok and National Youth Theatre Join Efforts to Support Creativity and Inclusion in the Performing Arts TIKTOK AND NATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE JOIN EFFORTS TO SUPPORT CREATIVITY AND INCLUSION IN THE PERFORMING ARTS NEW HASHTAG CHALLENGE #NYTFINDYOURSTAGE WILL SEE NATIONAL YOUTH THEATRE SCOUT NEW TALENT AND OFFER FREE AUDITIONS TO 120 HOPEFULS London, 27th November 2019 - TikTok, the leading destination for short-form mobile video, is announcing a new partnership with world-leading youth arts organisation National Youth Theatre of Great Britain (NYT), as part of the TikTok for Good initiative. Through this collaboration, TikTok is giving a voice and a platform to aspiring performing arts talent, offering them the chance to win one of 120 free highly coveted places on NYT’s nationwide auditions and interviews that take place across the country from November to March 2020. Participants don’t have to have any previous drama experience to apply and the challenge is designed to help young people struggling to find or afford a route into the creative industries. To kick off the collaboration, NYT is launching a hashtag challenge, #NYTFindYourStage, inviting people to showcase their talent through storytelling, singing, acting and comedy. This type of content is native to the platform and many creators such as @idea.soup, @sonna or @shericebanton have been able to successfully share their talent and grow a global audience through content inherently related to performing arts. The NYT TikTok channel will feature original drama content, acting tips, production highlights and more. A panel of NYT experts will select 120 candidates from all of the videos submitted to the TikTok hashtag challenge. These candidates will then have the opportunity to win one of the 800 places on the highly competitive NYT 2020 Summer Courses. If they are successful at these auditions, the winners will also have access to a host of other creative opportunities, following in the footsteps of the charity’s illustrious alumni including Helen Mirren, Daniel Craig, Matt Smith, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rosamund Pike, Daniel Day-Lewis, David Oyelowo, Andrea Riseborough, Orlando Bloom and Catherine Tate. Given the damaging decline of arts education in schools, providing young people with access to high-quality arts opportunities is more important than ever. Through this new digital partnership, we want to reach beyond those already enjoying the huge benefits of exposure to theatre at an early age and reach talented creative young people where they’re at, on platforms like TikTok. TikTok will continue to work closely with the National Youth Theatre, whose charitable remit is to give free and affordable opportunities both on stage and backstage to those aged 14- 25 from all corners of the UK. Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

National Youth Theatre is a world leading youth organisation for 14-25 year olds that works across Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Every year we travel across the country to audition young people who are interested in giving drama a go to join National Youth Theatre as Company Members and take part in one of our residential summer courses. After the summer course you become a National Youth Theatre Company Member which means you can take get involved in our shows across the country, workshops, and a whole host of free opportunities for members. We’ve got a whole load of famous alumni including Daniel Craig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Catherine Tate, Matt Smith and many many more. What is the Auditions Access Fund The Auditions Access Fund is a scheme supported the actor Hugh Bonneville (Downtown Abbey, Paddington) who was once a National Youth Theatre Member himself. The Auditions Access Fund allows National Youth Theatre to bring a free Drama Workshop followed a few weeks later by a free Audition Day to 10 partner venues across the UK in areas with limited arts provision. These workshops and audition days are open to anyone aged 14-25 who is interested in giving drama a go, and would like to audition for NYT for free. No experience necessary! How does it all work?
