  • The Castlecomer Plateau
23 The Castlecomer plateau By T. P. Lyng, N.T. HE Castlecomer Plateau is the tableland that is the watershed between the rivers Nore and Barrow. Owing T to the erosion of carboniferous deposits by the Nore and Barrow the Castlecomer highland coincides with the Castle comer or Leinster Coalfield. Down through the ages this highland has been variously known as Gower Laighean (Gabhair Laighean), Slieve Margy (Sliabh mBairrche), Slieve Comer (Sliabh Crumair). Most of it was included within the ancient cantred of Odogh (Ui Duach) later called Ui Broanain. The Normans attempted to convert this cantred into a barony called Bargy from the old tribal name Ui Bairrche. It was, however, difficult territory and the Barony of Bargy never became a reality. The English labelled it the Barony of Odogh but this highland territory continued to be march lands. Such lands were officially termed “ Fasach ” at the close of the 15th century and so the greater part of the Castle comer Plateau became known as the Barony of Fassadinan i.e. Fasach Deighnin, which is translated the “ wi lderness of the river Dinan ” but which officially meant “ the march land of the Dinan.” This no-man’s land that surrounds and hedges in the basin of the Dinan has always been a boundary land. To-day it is the boundary land between counties Kil kenny, Carlow and Laois and between the dioceses of Ossory, Kildare and Leighlin. The Plateau is divided in half by the Dinan-Deen river which flows South-West from Wolfhill to Ardaloo. The rim of the Plateau is a chain of hills averag ing 1,000 ft.

  • Parliament Street, Kilkenny
Parliament Street 197 4- Anna De Loughrey O N the completion of High Street the English colonists discovered it was impossible to accommodate the rapidly increasing numbers of their fellow adventurers who constantly requested admission into this community. The founders of the town applied to the Earl Mareschal for permission to extend the foundations over the vacant space extending from the end of James’ Street to where was later known as the Watergate. This piece of ground was the property of the Church and was attached to the Cathedral lands and held in trust by Bishop De Rous. The Earl Mareschal applied to the Bishop to give permission to the colonists to construct buildings over the unoccupied space. The Bishop agreed to grant the land from Cottrell’s Bridge to St. Kyran’s Well on condition the Earl and his successors pay to the Bishop and his successors 4 ozs of gold annually. The Rev. Mr. Graves tells us the charter between the Bishop and the Earl is preserved in the “ White Book of Ossory ” amongst the Clarendon manuscripts. The street was added to the hightown at some date between A.D. 1202 and 1218 and was built with the same design for protection, having a bottle neck at both ends. Two public buildings were erected on the brow of the road leading from Cottrell’s Bridge at the rear of what was later the Watergate to St. Kyran’s Well in Kieran Street. These buildings were St. Francis Abbey and Grace’s Castle. The land thus obtained became the street known as the Coal Market, so called because it became the public mart for the sale of coal brought in from the Castlecomer mines.

During the Commemoration of the Rising many people in Carlow must have remembered a lady whose courage has never been duly appreciated. Her drapery shop, in the centre of Dublin St., was to many of us, children at the time, the bulwark of Republican sentiment. There we bought the little celluloid badges of the Tricolour. In the years of struggle that followed, the badges were inset with pictures of the leaders. It may seem a small thing now to have displayed publicly a whole range of national emblems. But in the context of the times it was bravery and patriotism of a very high order. Thus, in this Jubilee Year, we salute a gracious and great·hearted lady who fanned the Phoenix Flame, and whom we remember with affection and gratitude.
