Print Walks/Events Programme V1113 0214 Barnard Castle Ramblers Walks/Events Programme November 2013 - February 2014 Walks and Events - General Information Everybody is welcome to attend the walk, but you must have appropriate footwear and clothing. For day long walks, bring enough food and drink for 5-6 hours. Most of our walks start at 10:00, but there is more variation in Winter - unusual start times are highlighted. At Weekends & Bank Holidays the normal Barnard Castle meeting place for car sharing is the Health Centre, Richardson Fields, off Victoria Road. NB: as members don't all live in Barnard Castle there is no guarantee that anyone will be at the Health Centre. Therefore unless you have prearranged a lift from there (see: Walk Notes ) you should be prepared to make your own way to the walk location if required. [6 Miles] Meet at 10.00 am outside the United Reformed Church Hall, Queen Street, Barnard Castle, (parking at Health Centre or in Newgate or opposite Bowes Museum) for an optional circular walk of approx. 6 leisurely miles via Lartington. Wednesday - 20th November 2013 - Milestone House - Barnard Castle [6 Miles] Meet the leaders at 9.30am in Galgate (near 54 Degrees North) to catch the 9.40 No.72 Bowes bus to Milestone House for the linear walk back to Barnard Castle. Sunday 8th December 2013 - Short walks for busy people - A Barningham Circular [3½ Miles] A Sunday afternoon stroll of 3½ easy miles for those who would like to walk but do not have time to organise their own routes or for anyone wishing to "try out" the Ramblers. Saturday - 28th December 2013 - Seaton Carew - North Gare Nature Reserve - RSPB Saltholme [7/8 Miles] Meet at 10:00am on Seaton Carew Sea Front opposite Station Lane GR:NZ525298 for 5 mls along beach and dunes to North Gare. Lunch at Seaton in beach shelter or in very good value restaurant at Saltholme RSPB Nature Reserve. Afternoon walk round RSPB Reserve (2-4 mls). Bring binoculars. Total of 7/8 easy miles. On journey home opportunity to view, take a ride or even walk over the top of Teesside's most famous landmark (after Roseberry Topping that is!) - The Transporter Bridge. [10 Miles] Meet at Guisborough Forest Car Park in Pinchinthorpe ( GR:NZ584153 ) at 10.00am to catch 10.15 no. 5 bus to North Skelton. Walk via Cleveland Street and Cleveland Way paths back to Pinchinthorpe. Route may be modified depending on weather. 10 moderate miles. Mostly paths & some hills. Tea and cakes afterwards at the Leaders.     LANDSCAPE CHARACTER THE LANDSCAPE CLASSIFICATION The Landscape Classification The County Durham Landscape Character Assessment identifies landscape types and character areas at three different levels - the regional, the sub-regional and the local. Regional County Character Areas Sub-regional Broad Landscape Types Broad Character Areas See Table 1 Local Local Landscape Types See Table 2 Local Sub-types County Character Areas. County Character Areas are based on Natural England’s Countryside Character Areas. There are 6 Countryside Character Areas in County Durham, all of which extend beyond its administrative boundaries. County Character Areas are effectively those parts of Countryside Character Areas lying within the County. The boundaries of County Character Areas are more precisely drawn than those of Countryside Character Areas as they are based on a more detailed level of assessment. In reality the boundaries between these broad landscape zones are often gradual and progressive and difficult to identify precisely on the ground. The character of County Character Areas may differ in some ways from that of the larger Countryside Character Areas to which they belong. The descriptions of County Character Areas given here in the Landscape Assessment may therefore be slightly different to the descriptions given in other publications for Countryside Character Areas. Broad Landscape Types and Character Areas Broad Landscape Types are landscapes with similar patterns of geology, soils, vegetation, land use, settlement and field patterns identified at a broad sub-regional level. As with County Character Areas, the boundaries between Broad Landscape Types are not always precise, as the change between one landscape and another can be gradual and progressive.

    Historical Journey along the River Tees and its Tributaries Synopsis The document describes a virtual journey along the River Tees beginning at its source; the perspective is as much historical as descriptive of the current scene. Where significant tributaries join the river, they also are tracked back to their start-points. Particular attention is paid to bridges and watermills because of their intimate associations with the rivers, but nearby buildings, both religious and secular are also given attention. Some people have been specially important to developments associated with the river, and brief biographical notes are provided for them. Finally, I would stress that this is very much a personal account dealing with facets of interest to me during the 30 years or so that I spent living and working near the River Tees.
