Dear People, 25th June 2017 (Prayer Week 4) Early in my parish life I was at a clergy “Do you know the catechism? Honestly?” fraternal, ministers of the local Anglican, Methodist, Baptist, URC Churches welcoming me to the area. Mass Times and Intentions Good men, and we worked well together over the years. The Baptist minister and I walked partway 12th SUNDAY OF YEAR (A) home together before he left me to visit one of the (Saturday) 6.00 pm at St. Joseph’s (Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 5.15 pm) elderly in their church. “We Baptist ministers are expected to make a thousand visits a year,” he said. 9.00 am at Rosary Church What an ideal, I thought, and I made up my mind I 10.30 am at St. Joseph’s 6.00 pm at St. Joseph’s would take that as a guideline. (Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 5.15 pm) One thousand per year equals 20 per week. (Intentions for Sunday Mass) Allow for weeks not possible (weather, other priestly for Kathleen Kearney, Sarah Boyd, Celia Cates, work like retreats, hospital, schools, conferences, Margaret Wanjui, David & Mary Ellen Hudson, pilgrimages, meetings) and that rises to 30 per week, Hughie McHugh, Maureen Burns, John & June Fertig 5 per day. Allow that the housebound, the sick at MONDAY 26th JUNE home and in hospital and in our nursing and care 7.00 pm at St. Joseph’s for Peter & Mary O’Brien homes would need my first consideration, and it becomes clear that the thousand visits will not be to TUESDAY 27th JUNE a thousand homes but must include regular visits to (St , Bishop) the needy, the lonely, the sick. 10.00 am at St. Joseph’s for Colette Wright Every day I spend the morning at prayer, at WEDNESDAY 28th JUNE mass, at my desk, on the phone, meeting with (St , Bishop) people and at the schools. Every afternoon I am out 10.00 am at St. Joseph’s for Hughie McHugh in the parish or at the hospital, aiming to make at least five or six visits. I so enjoy the visiting, regret THURSDAY 29th JUNE not being a ble to v isit more - but when would I do it? HOLY DAY Feast of St Peter & St Paul Trying to plan home visits, given people’s widely 10.00 am and 7.00 pm at St. Joseph’s differing lives, is not easy. If no one is at home I say for People of the Parish & for Our Departed Loved Ones a prayer at the door and leave a card of a smiling FRIDAY 30th JUNE Pope Francis (it used to be smiling Pope Benedict (First Martyrs of Rome) and smiling Pope John Paul) and go on my way. 7.00 pm at St. Joseph’s for Good Neighbours It is a privilege to be welcomed into people’s SATURDAY 1st JULY homes, but the pattern of home and family and work (St Oliver Plunkett) life is very different from years ago. One of my priest No Service at the Rosary Church today friends walked his parish for two and a half hour s and found n o one a t home anywhere and told me how 13th SUNDAY OF YEAR (A) disheartening it felt. I agreed it is much harder than (Saturday) 6.00 pm at St. Joseph’s years ago to judge good visiting times. (Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 5.15 pm) As my ability to walk has weakened in recent SUNDAY 2nd JULY months it is parish visiting I have most missed. But, 9.00 am at Rosary Church : 10.30 am at St. Joseph’s as when you were not at home (at work, school, 6.00 pm at St. Joseph’s shopping, visiting yourselves, gone for a walk, in the (Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 5.15 pm) garden) and I prayed for you at your door, I now (Intentions for Sunday Mass) pray for you back here at No.12 Goodwood Road. I for Reg & Mary Lowe, Grandma’s Grandsons, am still clocking in my thousand visits in prayer . . . Children in the Womb. God bless you for your understanding, BLESSED SACRAMENT CHAPEL open every day this week from 10.30 am - 6.30 pm.
