Save These Dates From the Commodore February 3 Lots of moving parts make BSC run smoothly. NYRA Winter Series #6 In preparing for this issue of the Epitaph, I reread February 4 Bill Green’s comments from a year ago. He has an Super Bowl Sunday excellent review of what jobs are done in running February 10 the club and by whom. A copy of the organization BOD @ 9:30 chart is now posted on the club bulletin board. If February 10 you have questions, concerns or suggestions, Valentine Social @ 4PM please use it to contact committee members who March 2 have graciously volunteered their time. Cruise Committee @ 7PM Speaking of volunteer time, you will see below in- March 3 formation about our need for a new club Racing Rules of Sailing secretary. Please read the description of the du- March 10 ties and think seriously about contributing your BOD @ 9:30 time for this important position. If interested, or March 17 if you need more details, please contact Nominat- Spring Workday ing Committee Chair Doug Longhini, me or any BSC board member. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC 1! February 2018 Volume 46, Issue 2 BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH From the Commodore (Continued from page 1) Over the past three or four years, dry storage has seen an increase in the number of powerboats that are kept on BSC property. The rules remain the same: If a member with a applies for a dry storage slip and we are full, a powerboat will be asked to vacate an assigned DS slip. However, certain vessels have been granted a pass since they are actively used for club purposes, including regatta sup- port, hurricane duty or as a safety boat. Underway is a project by Bill Green, Gay Whitney and Bill Kirsch to make this a more organized, committed and quantifiable process. Boats that commit to sup- port eight events will receive “Preferred Parking” in dry storage assignments. Surprisingly, when count- ed there are 40+ days when powerboats and crews are needed. Even if you do not have a powerboat, volunteers are still needed. The cold weather brought BSC a few challenges. The water in the clubhouse froze. Ed Doughty, Richard Schott and I applied some heat, thawed out the pipes and found out why they froze. Seems our resident squirrel stripped the insulation off the heat tape wrapped pipe hidden inside a cabinet, and then chewed off the end of the heat tape for good measure. We left the kitchen faucet dripping through the coldest spell. The heat pump decided it needed a new compressor. Thanks to Bill Green for making the initial contact on fixing this and to Joe Gormley for some quick work getting the part here and arranging the repair. Joe also supplied the BOD with options: just to replace the compressor, replace the whole unit, or go ground water source heat pump. Due to the pricing and the already-in-progress expenses, a repair was the prudent choice. BSC maintains a Closed Head policy. This statement speaks for itself. Zero tolerance. The BSC 2018 Calendar was discussed at the January BOD meeting during which some scheduling con- flicts were resolved and opinions expressed. Some BOD members think there are too many events at BSC; some think too few. In total by my count, using events that happen at BSC and avoiding other groups’ events, there are 42 weeks/weekends committed to sailing and other activities, including five ETYSA camps. If you have an opinion, please find a BOD member, or several, and let them know what you think. January 14 was the first of hopefully several website information sessions. About 20+ BSC members, Committee Chairs and BOD members attended the 90-minute session. Jeremy LeRay and Lee Toderick gave a nice overview of how the site works and how to navigate it. Then they moved onto solv- ing individual and group needs. Lee met with the docks committee chairs, while Jeremy met with Epitaph staff to solve picture posting. Lee then took on individual members’ login issues. Great work guys, and a BIG thank you! More later on another session, perhaps in February. These were just some of the moving parts at BSC in January. Let’s hope we get back to warmer weather soon. Enjoy Valentines Day! Remember, Workday is coming March 17!

Mike

Unfortunately, Sandy Drechsler has submitted her resignation as Secretary for Blackbeard Sailing Club. We wish Sandy the best and thank her for her years of service in this very important position. This leaves the Club’s Board of Directors in the position of having to fill a vacancy in its slate of officers for the remainder of the term (12/31/2018). The Secretary is responsible for recording/maintaining the minutes of the Board meetings (once a month), keeping up-to-date records on the membership, providing correspondence as required and other duties as assigned by the Board. There is a more complete listing posted below. Skills for the position vary but a knowledge of computer programs and the ability to listen and sort through the conversations had by the Board are essential. The Board asks that any member interested in this position contact Doug Longhini, Chair of the Nominating Committee, or a member of the Board of Directors. Please be open to volunteering for this important position in our club.

Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC 5! February 2018 Volume 46, Issue 2 BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH Hello Fellow Blackbeard Members By Arch Altman If you are an Amazon.com purchaser, here’s a painless way to get a small part of your purchase donated by Amazon to ETYSA: Blackbeard’s Junior Sailing Program is administered by the Edward Teach Youth Sailing Association, Inc. (ETYSA), a 501c3 Non-Profit Corporation. In order to cover our ongoing costs and improve the program for our present juniors and the juniors of the future, we continually need to raise money. "Amazon Smile" was suggested to us by Stephanie Davies. This program sends ETYSA a small, 0.5% donation on each purchase made. As just about everyone buys products from Amazon, 0.5% adds up pretty quickly, particularly if members identify ETYSA as the non-profit they wish to support. The best part is, not only does ETYSA get a donation on virtually everything pur- chased, nothing changes for you. You get the same price, the same shipping, the same Amazon Prime. You just have to select Edward Teach Youth Sailing Association and sign on through www.Smile.Amazon.com rather than www.Amazon.com There is a bookmark on the initial page you can place in your browser or on your desktop. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC 7! February 2018 Volume 46, Issue 2 BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH 2018 New Year’s Day Fred Latham “Memorial” Regatta By Doug Longhini It was a balmy, sunny day as the San Juan 21 Fleet 8 boats approached the starting line. (Well, it may have been classified as balmy in Antarctica!) Boats from as far away as Illinois, Virginia and Wilmington were at the starting line for the abbreviated race that took eleven minutes for all the boats to complete the course. The starting line between C Dock and the end of the breakwater made for some interesting maneuvering before the gun went off for the start of the drag race. JoJo, skippered by Ed Doughty, with crew Mark Hittner, took the checkered flag. Kanga skippered by Doug Longhini, with crew Doug King, sitting right on Jojo’s , came in the first loser position. This could not have been a more fitting day to honor Fred, who passed away just a few months ago, and to start the New Year. Fred started this event 46 years ago when he said that what you do on this day will point you toward what you want to do all year (“SAIL” and have fun ). Most of you may know the story about Fred being sent out to buy a new sink for the kitchen and returning with a brand-new San Juan 21. The story goes that, at the dinner table that night, there was a conversation as to what to name the boat. One of his daughters said, “Mad Mama would be a good name because that was what mom was when you got home without the sink.” Following the awards, there was a brief dedication of the perpetual transom trophy honoring Fred and all this “Lifetime Member” did for Blackbeard Sailing Club. Most folks don't realize that if it were not for Bob and Coral Clark, the manufacturers of San Juans, and dedicated sailors like Fred, our club would not exist. Cal Guthrie, San Juan 21 Class Secretary, read the words of a hymn that personifies how we, as sailors, view our passion before and after our earthly sailing days.

“Sail On” Upon a wide and stormy sea, Thou’rt sailing to eternity, And thy great Admiral orders thee:— “Sail on! sail on! sail on!”

Art far from shore, and weary worn— The sky o’ercast, thy canvas torn? Hark ye! a voice to thee is borne:— “Sail on! sail on! sail on!”

Do comrades tremble and refuse To further dare the taunting hues? No other course is thine to choose, “Sail on! sail on! sail on!”

Do snarling waves thy craft assail? Art pow’rless, drifting with the gale? Take heart! God’s Word shall never fail! “Sail on! sail on! sail on!”

The storms will soon be past, The darkness will not always last; God lives and He commands: “Sail on! Sail on!”

Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC 12! February 2018 Volume 46, Issue 2 BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH New Year’s Eve Party By Jane Staveley A group of hearty partyers welcomed in the New Year at BSC. Hosts were Jane Staveley, Joanne Doughty and Rae Lynn Longhini. Donna and Scott Wade did a great job with the karaoke set-up once again. Many of the old favorites and some new tunes were sung, crooned, and just plain belted out! There were individual performances as well as groups, including the now-traditional “guys vs. gals.” Our own saxo- phonist, Arch Altman, accompanied several numbers. Folks enjoyed beverages and hors d’oeuvres; and a fair number made it well past Blackbeard Midnight (aka 9 pm) and all the way to the real midnight to welcome in 2018! The highlight of the evening was surely Ed Doughty, accompanied by Rae Lynn Longhini, singing Midnight at the Oasis. Our camels definitely were sent to bed after that!!

Winter Series Goes All Spring By Eddy Parker

If you haven’t noticed, it has been cold outside with the Neuse River freezing over and New Bern getting two snowstorms in two weeks. With all of the cold weather, racing was cancelled for the December race and the first race in January; so we were all excited to see that spring-like weather was returning for the January 20th race. With 11 boats racing in three classes, the river had a lot of activity for a winter day. The race committee got off three great races in 6-12 knots of breeze. The wind started out light and gradually built to a consistent 8-12 knots by the second and third race. With crystal clear skies and temps in the 60’s, it was a great day. Highlights from the weekend included some close mark roundings and original spinnaker work. Perhaps it wasn’t so original, but done with a great amount of style. I was racing on BSC member John Rice’s J95. At the windward mark in the second race we were approaching the mark on starboard, with Dutch Wind to weather and Mighty Fine and Team Elite just behind us. Neither Dutch Wind nor Windtrip were go- ing to lay the mark, but for some reason Dutch Wind wanted to keep us pinned out- side of them til the last second. He ended up waiting too long allowing Mighty Fine to catch up. By the time we tacked onto port, Mighty Fine was fast closing on starboard, causing Dutch Wind to crash-tack back to port; but we were able to get by the fleet and round the mark in front of the melee behind us. To the right is a picture during the cluster dance at the windward mark.

Former commodore and active racer, Dave Whitney on Silent Pursuit, not only set his spinnaker sideways, but managed to fly it until time to jibe! I think the crew said something about a lot of wind shear and that they were trying to get more of the wind up high. With nine races completed and one more race day to go on February 3rd, nothing is settled as to who will win the Winter Series. If you are down at the club, you should get out on the water to watch the competition, or better yet, enter the final race and go sailing! Eddy
