Senior Counsel's Office
Senior Counsel’s Office In its fifth year, fiscal year 2004, the Senior Counsel’s Office is MIT’s central in‐house counsel’s office, providing comprehensive legal services and counseling on MIT matters in all areas of concern to the academy and the administration (except intellectual property law). The office represents MIT’s president, provost, executive vice president, and chancellor, as well as the deans, vice presidents, the departments, laboratories, and research centers, and administrative offices. We also arrange for and manage outside legal services when needed and oversee all litigation. Our office includes MIT’s senior counsel Jamie Lewis Keith, contracts counsel Margaret Brill, and litigation and risk management counsel Mark DiVincenzo, as well as a law clerk, Kathryn Johnson. (In FY2004 our office also included a part‐time environmental counsel. In FY2005 the office will include an associate counsel.) We are problem solvers and strategic‐thinking partners for our clients. We strive to be enablers, helping MIT’s senior officers, faculty, and staff to accomplish their mission‐critical objectives and to make informed decisions. Our office also brings the lessons learned from litigation, other disputes, and major transactions back to the MIT community through counseling and education. These lessons support management and faculty initiatives to minimize and avoid those reputational, financial, operational, and legal risks that can be appropriately managed, while still achieving MIT’s core mission. Prior to his current role, he was the Russell Palmer Endowed Professor in Accounting and held positions as the Acting Dean, the Associate Dean for MBA and Professional Masters programs, and Chairperson of the Accounting and Information Systems Department in the Broad College. Prior to returning to MSU in 2007, he received tenure and held several positions in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University over a 17-year period, including the first Henry & Horne Professorship in Accountancy, Dean’s Council of 100 Distinguished Scholar, and Faculty Director of the Master of Accountancy & Information Systems and the Masters of Taxation programs. NIDDK: 60 Years of Discovery, 1950-2010 The NIDDK was established as the National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases in 1950 by U.S. President Harry S. Truman. Sixty years and four name changes later, one thing has never changed: the Institute’s commitment to improving health through high-quality research. In 2010, NIDDK celebrated the rich history of advances made possible through the federal investment in research in our laboratories here in Bethesda, MD, and in Phoenix, AZ, and by grantees around the U.S. and beyond. NIDDK’S SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM: CELEBRATES PAST, LOOKS TO FUTURE On Tuesday, September 21, 2010, NIDDK hosted, “Unlocking the Secrets of Science: Building the Foundation for Future Advances,” a scientific symposium to highlight research advances made possible, in part, with NIDDK support. NIDDK director, Dr. Griffin Rodgers, welcomed all in attendance to what promised to be an exciting day of cutting-edge scientific presentations. Former NIDDK directors Dr. Lester B. Salans (Mount Sinai Medical School and Forest Laboratories), Dr. Phillip Gorden (NIDDK), and Dr. Allen M. Spiegel (Albert Einstein College of Medicine) chaired scientific sessions on Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases; Nutrition, Hematology, and Urology; and Endocrinology, Education, Outreach, and the NIDDK Intramural Research Program.
