Patna Rly. Station Brief History Patna, presently the capital of Bihar state is one of the oldest cities in the world. In ancient times, Patna was not known by its present name. In history the city has been known by different names such as Patligram, Azimabad, Kusumpur, Patlibothra, Pushpapura, Patalipura and the present day Patna. There are three popular theories regarding the naming of Patna:- 1. It derives its name from the word pattan that means a port in Sanskrit. 2. It is also believed that the city got its name from Patan Devi, the presiding deity of this city and her temple is one of the Shakti Peethas. 3. According to a mythological story, a king named Putraka, created Patna by a magical stroke for his queen Patali literally “Trumpet Flower “ which gives it its antique name Pataligram. In honour of the first born to the queen, the city was named Pataliputra. Gram is the Sanskrit for a village and Putra means a son. It is said that in the year 490BC, Ajatsatru, the king of Magadh, wanted to shift his capital from the hilly Rajgriha to Patna, to combat the lichhivis of Vaishali.
