The materials include audiocassettes and born-digital files. The events include lectures, discussions, film and video screenings, and collaborative symposia with other arts institutions. The events focus on topics related to art history, performance art, provenance, digital humanities, architecture and the contemporary arts. Language: Collection material is in English Administrative History The Getty Research Institute (GRI) is a program developed and overseen by the J. Paul Getty Trust, an international cultural and philanthropic organization serving both general audiences and specialized professionals. The Trust is a not-for-profit institution, educational in purpose and character, that focuses on the visual arts in all of their dimensions. The Trust currently supports and oversees four programs: the J. Paul Getty Museum; the Getty Foundation; the Getty Conservation Institute; and the Getty Research Institute, which is dedicated to furthering knowledge and advancing understanding of the visual arts. The GRI is located at the Getty Center in Brentwood, California and serves an international community of scholars and the interested public through special collections of rare materials and digital resources. The GRI creates and disseminates new knowledge through its expertise, its active collecting program, public programs, institutional collaborations, exhibitions, publications, digital services, and residential scholars program. The activities and scholarly resources of the GRI guide and sustain each other and, together, provide a unique environment for research, critical inquiry, and debate. The work of the GRI takes its place within the collaborative context of the Trust as a whole, which includes the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the international projects and research of the Conservation Institute, and the philanthropic outreach of the Getty Foundation. Until 2015, the GRI's Exhibitions department developed and designed exhibitions at the GRI and oversaw events related to the exhibitions. The GRI's Contemporary Programs and Research Department also facilitated multidisciplinary programming related to architecture and the contemporary arts until July 2009. At that time, as part of a larger restructuring of the GRI, Contemporary Programs and Research merged with the Department of Architecture to form the Department of Architecture and Contemporary Art and the Scholars Program was moved directly under the administration of the GRI's Director's Office. As of 2015, the Department of Architecture and Contemporary Art, Exhibitions, and Collection Development departments merged to form an overarching unit called Curatorial. Legacy materials were added in 2011 by Zoe MacLeod. 2014 to 2020 event materials were processed and added to the finding aid in 2016 and 2020 by Helen Kim. Lorain Wang ingested the digital materials into Rosetta in 2019 and 2020. In 2016, it was determined that all of the California Video artist oral histories were not GRI public events and were removed from this collection to form their own independent collection (finding aid no. IA60004). Running times have not been listed for event recordings added to the finding aid in 2019 and after. Shared Inheritances: Communities and Cultural Heritage panel discussions, 1998

Scope and Content Note A joint collaboration between the Getty Research Institute and the Getty Conservation Institute, Shared Inheritances presented a series of dialogues about the creation, destruction, and preservation of cultural space and objects, particularly examples of cultural heritage in contested places, underscoring shared beliefs and practices, as well as competition and conflict. Lecturers addressed the challenging issues of origins and ownership, and case study panels sought to discuss how communities in Los Angeles and around the world deal with ownership, objects, places, and traditions over which diverse groups assert ownership. The monthly series represented four themes during 1998 (Sites and Origin and Marketplaces of Identity: Olvera Street, Los Angeles; Sites of Origin and Marketplaces of Identity: Part II: Insadong, Seoul; The First and Last Nations: Shared Histories and Uncertain Futures; After Authenticity: Tourism and Contemporary Cultural Process). Transarchitectures: Visions of Digital Communities symposium, June 5-6, 1998 Scope and Content Note Artists, technologists, designers and others manipuate "sites" and "spaces on the Web, in virtual reality, and in other digital environments, yet traditional notions of architecture are no longer sufficient to describe these new spaces. This sympsosium brought leaders in their fields to investigate changing ideas of architecture, space, and community. The first day involved a series of discussions among invited participants and the second day was open to the general public. 1999 Events Berlin's Meaning in Los Angeles: Architecture and the City conference, December 6-7, 1999 Scope and Content Note The conference examined how new architectural forms are giving expression to the changing image of Berlin at the end of the 20th century. Participants considered how architecture in Los Angeles plays an increasingly important role in defining the dynamically changing city. Berlin's Meaning in Los Angeles gathered architects, historians, critics, and others active in the field of architecture and urban planning. Panel discussions covered topics such as the role of architecture in the marketing of cities, the accumulation of history and the construction of forgetting in the urban landscape, and the use of public space by diverse communities. Scope and Content Note This invitational workshop examined concepts such as how the formation of a collection might sometimes carry with it a suggestion of permanence, though collection involves change and assumes the movement of those objects constitute collections. While some museum collections seem to remain constant, most collections are in flux. Even "permanent collections" are reconfigured and thus remade. The traffic in objects central to the praises of collecting involves both assemblage and dispersal. It also frequently involves shifting and complex networks of individuals, including: collectors, agents, dealers, and a variety of intermediaries. Paul Getty Museum convened an international symposium on the exchanges between ancient Iran and the Classical world. The two-day symposium, held at UCLA and the Getty Villa, invited speakers and scholars in residence at the Getty Villa whose projects pertain to the nexus between ancient Persia and the West.

Getty Graduate Symposium, February 1, 2020 Scope and Content Note The Getty Research Institute hosted the second annual Getty Graduate Symposium, showcasing the work of emerging scholars from art history graduate programs across California. Organized into three sessions, the symposium included nine individual presentations, panel discussions moderated by faculty mentors, and question-and-answer sessions with the audience. Participating universities included Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Irvine; University of California, Los Angeles; University of California, Riverside; University of California, San Diego; University of California, Santa Barbara; University of California, Santa Cruz; and the University of Southern California.
