Vann - For Douglas C. Vann, former University of Hawaii professor and researcher, the science ofgenetics was his profession but sailing was his passion. Vann was past commodore of the Hawaii Yacht Racing Association and well-known in the island sailing community as skipper of the 44-foot sailboat Tiare. "He started sailing when he was 10 or 11 years old on Coronado island in San Diego," said his wife, Sharry Vann. "When he had his 60th birthday in May, we celebrated it at the Hawaii Yacht Club." Vann died Friday aboard the Tiare competing in the club's weekly sunset race to and from the No. 2 buoy in the Keehi channel. Arlene Schade, office manager of Hawaii Yacht Club, said Vann was a hospitable sailor, often taking visiting yachtsmen and other strangers aboard "to give them the experience of sailing in Hawaii." He was involved for years in support efforts for international races such as the Transpacific and Kenwood Cup competitions. He helped set up and update Internet sites to track the progress of various races and sailors including Kenichi Horie of Japan, who stopped here in April on his solo voyage from San Francisco to Japan.
