Program: • This is a program for non-native, upper intermediate Spanish speakers at the 300 level. • Enrollment varies with average number of students being about 15 to 20 during the semesters to 30 during the summer. • Classes are held at the Segovia Centre, situated in a contemporarily restored sixteenth century building adjacent to a lovely local park overlooking the valley--a unique backdrop for classes. It is located in the heart of Segovia between the Plaza Mayor and the and close to shops, students' homes, and the post office.

Approximate Program • Summer – between $5,300 and $5,600 Costs • Semester – between $10,000 and $10,500 (Office of International Affairs has information on additional expenses –flight, passport and application fees, etc.) Class Schedule: • Fall and winter semesters o Fourteen weeks in length, during which students typically take three to four courses. o Classes are typically taught four days a week and an hour in length. o The fifth day of the week is reserved for course excursions, or as a study day. A one-week break in the middle of the semesters allows students time for independent travel. • The summer session o Six weeks in length, during which students typically take two classes. o Summer classes are typically an hour and a half in length, and meet four days a week. o The fifth day, usually Wednesday or Friday, is reserved for course excursions, or as a study day. A unique component of the summer program is a Special Topics Course taught by a visiting faculty member from the Midwest Consortium for Study Abroad (MCSA), designed specifically for the Segovia locale.

Course listing: • Spanish conversation and grammar (CMU equivalent = SPN 214) • Advanced Spanish composition and conversation (CMU=SPN 341) • and its role in the European Union (CMU = 300 elective) • Spanish Literature (course content varies/period offered as do ours at the 300 level) (CMU = SPN 386 or 387) • History of (CMU = 300 elective) • Spanish through the Media (CMU= 300 elective) • Spanish culture and civilization (CMU = SPN 376 ) • An additional course is often offered at the 300 level Upon arrival in Segovia, all students take a language placement test, which gauges oral, written, and listening comprehension, to determine their level of language skills. Based on results of the test, students can participate in the language course corresponding to their skill level.

Teaching Staff: • Classes are taught exclusively in Spanish by accredited native Spanish instructors well-experienced in teaching students from the United States. • Small classes give faculty members the opportunity to interact daily with their students, both inside and outside the classroom.

Housing: • Students are housed with host families that have very good recommendations. • The families provide three meals per day.

Field trips: • Trips may include visits to regional points of interest such as o Toledo o Valle de Los Caídos o La Ruta de Los Castillos o La Granja o and museums, including the Prado. • During the fall and winter semesters, an additional academic excursion of two to three days may be planned to a more distant location, such as or . • The exact destinations and schedules vary from term to term and are announced at the start of each program.

Segovia’s attractions: o One of the most beautiful and historically interesting cities in Spain. o The most famous of its many striking buildings and monuments is probably the Roman Aqueduct that is still in working condition almost 2,000 years after its construction. o Other favorites include the Alcázar and the Cathedral
