Bollywood Cinema: A Critical Genealogy Vijay Mishra Asian Studies Institute Vijay Mishra is Professor of English Literature at Murdoch University, Perth. Born in Fiji, he graduated from Victoria University of Wellington in 1967. This was followed, via Christchurch Teachers’ College, Macquarie and Sydney, by doctorates from ANU and Oxford. Among his publications are: Dark Side of the Dream: Australian Literature and the Postcolonial Mind (with Bob Hodge) (1991), The Gothic Sublime (1994), Devotional Poetics and the Indian Sublime (1998), Bollywood Cinema: Temples of Desire (2002). His next book (entitled The Literature of the Indian Diaspora: Theorizing the Diasporic Imaginary) will be published by Routledge (London) in March 2007. He plays the Indian harmonium, is a Beatles fan, and reads Sanskrit. The 2005 edition defines it as: “a name for the Indian popular film industry, based in Bombay. Origin 1970s. Blend of Bombay and Hollywood.” The incorporation of the word in the OED acknowledges the strength of a film industry which, with the coming of sound in 1931, has produced some 9,000 films. -

L.V. Prasad and His Films
L.V. Prasad and his films L.V.Prasad produced memorable films in many Indian languages, some of which he himself 1956 directed. The first film was ‘Ilavelpu’ in Telugu. ILLAVELPU Almost all the films produced by L.V.Prasad were Language : Telugu made under the banner of Prasad Productions Director : D.Yoganand making it a household name in those days. Cast : Anjali Devi, Sharada produced in 1957 received unanimous A.Nageshwara Rao acclaim from the press. The Statesman called it as a film ‘which one should not miss’. Screen 1957 called it ‘a high powered melodrama punctuated with good humored interludes’. In 1981 ‘Ek Duuje Ke Liye’ directed by K.Balachander created waves across India and got him the filmfare award for best screenplay. L.V.Prasad, as a film producer gave opportunities to many famous directors of later years to direct his films. Some of them are D.Yoganand, Film : Sharada T.Prakash Rao, Srikanth, A.Subba Rao, Kotayya Language : Hindi Pratyagatma, Ramakrishna and Chander Vohra Director : L.V.Prasad to name a few. He also worked with some of Screenplay : Inder Raj the famous directors of the time including Dialogues : Vishwamitter Adil K.Balachander and Dasari Narayan Rao. The monarchs of B-town lined up to shake hands with the royal couple at the event organized to raise funds for Childline India, Magic Bus and Door Step School. Among those who extended a warm welcome to the royal couple were Neetu and Rishi Kapoor, Madhuri and Dr. Sriram Nene, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karan Johar, Anil Kapoor and daughter Sonam, Shiamak Davar, Alia Bhatt, Aditi Rao Hydari, Parineeti Chopra, Shilpa and Raj Kundra, Farhan Akhtar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Huma Qureshi, Anjali and Sachin Tendulkar. Most actors turned up in Manish Malhotra outfits, but the Duchess of Cambridge—who is known for her style—floored the biggest names of Bollywood, dressed in a blue evening gown by British fashion designer Jenny Packham with bead embroidery done in India and a pair of blue earrings from Indian brand Amrapali. When Prince William and Kate expressed their desire, through the British Embassy, to experience the famous Bollywood song and dance culture, singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan and eminent choreographer Shaimak Davar delivered exhilarating impromptu performances. -
