Hamilton sisters feel the Magic at ANZ Premier-

Hamilton netballers and sisters 12-year-old Kayleigh and 10-year-old Claire got a taste of the action when they met the superstars of netball on centre court at Claudeland Arena before the Magic vs Pulse ANZ Premiership game on Sunday.

Kayleigh, a High School student and former Te Rapa School student, and Claire, a Te Rapa Primary School student, won the chance to meet captains Sam Winders (Magic) and Claire Kersten (Pulse) and lead the teams onto the court as a part of the ANZ Future Captains programme. “Standing next to the captains was a really cool experience - they weren’t that tall,” said Kayleigh.

A highlight of watching the game courtside was the ball bouncing off the barriers near where the sisters were seated. “At the start of the game it was quite close, but after the second quarter the Magic lost it. The Pulse’s attack was really strong. I noticed how they kept marking their player closely so they could intercept the ball,” said Kayleigh.

Both sisters agree that captain Sam Winders is their favourite player, they said they found her an inspira- tion to their own games as fellow wing defence players. The sisters plan to practice their passes and shoot a few hoops in the backyard. “I didn’t like netball at first. I was used to sports where you can move with the ball. But my coach asked me to play as there weren’t enough players and I’ve been playing ever since,” said Kayleigh.

ANZ Head of Sponsorship Sue McGregor says ANZ is committed to its support of netballers in Aotearoa from local Hamilton players right up to the elite athletes in the ANZ Premiership and the Silver Ferns.

“That’s why we’re giving 94 young people from all over Aotearoa the chance to be part of the ANZ Prem- iership and to meet their netball heroes as an ANZ Future Captain. After such a tough year for the netball community in 2020, it’s great we can offer this once in a lifetime opportunity to our country's youngest netball fans and players. We hope this experience inspires them to remain passionate about their training and to try their very best on the court.”

Applications for the ANZ Future Captains programme are now open at anzcourtside.co.nz

Getting “Te Rapa Primary School” Children Focused for Learning Sleep Routines - Many school-age children do not get enough sleep and this can take a serious toll on how well their brains work during the day. Ensure they get to bed early and establish good bedtime routines over the winter months. Things can go haywire over the colder darker months so it’s important that they are up fresh and bright eyed and ready to learn when they arrive at school each morning. Lunches – Talk with your child to find out what they like and then organise and pack a nutritious lunch that will have them raring to go each morning. Include a bottle of drink to ensure their lunch remains cool, consider fruit or vege snacks too. If they like it, they will eat it. Over Dressed – Ensure children come to school dressed for the season and the weather conditions for the day. Students do not learn well when they are hot / sweaty, and wear sweatshirts / hoodies when running around. Students who dress appropriately are comfortable, and cn engage fully in all activities and with enthusiasm. They will achieve to their potential when dressed appropriately. Tools of the Trade – Please ensure children come to school prepared. They need their stationery / school items here every day so they are “school ready” and can begin their schoolwork on time. They can then progress with their classmates. Allow a change of clothes for winter games on the fields too (Terms 2 & 3) and plan ahead for scheduled activities at a class / syndicate level or for any extra curricula activities.

Parent Evening - NetSafe Presentation We recently hosted a NetSafe NZ presenter at our school who we invited to visit so he could speak to parents / carers (and staff too) about harmful digital communications, and to clarify what it is, and how to recognise it as parents and as a young person. Mrs Paula Brinsden (Asst Principal) and I hosted 18 x parents / carers to the 6pm evening session on Tuesday last week. The presenter clarified ….  What practical steps can one take to reduce, prevent, and respond to online harm ?  Important conversation starters to have with your children about their technology use and how these can help reduce the risk.  Understanding the digital landscape - latest statistics on young people's experiences online.  Community connections - how our interactions between each other can provide guidance and support. Mrs Brinsden plans to share a written review comment about the presentation, and will highlight the role(s) that NetSafe provide to our wider community. We encourage our all of parents / carers to become familiar with NetSafe because our children are now able to access so much more on the internet, and it is our responsibility as adults to protect them when they are online.

We are happy to assist. A Student Leader’s Voice What is student leadership to me ? by Seb R.21 Year 8 Student Councillor Student Leadership to me means students of the school or club that they are a part of standing up and leading themselves and each other. They do not have to have a label as a "Student Councillor" or a "House Leader or Deputy". They could just show the qualities of a leader at any time. I enjoy attending Te Rapa Primary School because I am actively taught the qualities of “Leadership”, and staff are also teaching me the curriculum, to give me a good education at the same time. Te Rapa Spirit is instilled in me because this school is something to be proud of. My school is quite big on being a good person and it can still suitably fit the needs of our academic and sporting dreams and goals too, and we are helped to achieve these.

A Student Leader’s Voice What is student leadership to me ? by Shoji R.20 Year 8 Student Councillor Leadership to me means directing people on the "right path". Not only following, but showing and leading by example; teaching people how to do fact based things with real information and showing honesty. This leads to the idea that student leaders in Te Rapa Primary should show Te Rapa H.E.A.R.T. This concept means showing Honesty, Excellence, Aroha (caring), Respect, and Teamwork. Leaders at our school aspire for the best, and to be their best and perseverance is important too. A leader can't avoid his/ her jobs, so responsibility is also important. Consulting on Speed Limits Around Schools Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is consulting on the proposed Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2021 that lowers speed limits around schools to improve safety and encourage more children, parents, caregivers and school communities to use active modes of transport. The rule proposes lower speed limits outside all schools :  urban schools to 30 km/h, with the option of 40 km/h speed limits if appropriate.  rural schools to a maximum of 60 km/h (variable or permanent speed limits). There is more information about the Setting of Speed Limits Rule on the Waka Kotahi website, and to complete the survey please go to … https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WSR5SV5. Consultation runs to 25 June.

Future Enrolments : Our school needs to update our pre-enrolment database Our school must know the names, date of birth and address of all local children likely to enrol at Te Rapa Primary in the future. Our pre-entry database must be up-to-date for the next few years. Knowing in advance who is coming and when allows us to plan effectively for the future. It ensures we retain enough places for local children turning 5 years old in that calendar year. We can only do this if we know who they are, and when their 5th birthday occurs. Established parents, caregivers, grandparents, past pupils, staff and friends of our school can help as we try to record the names and details of the children of your friends, neighbours and workmates. This includes all families with pre-schoolers in the school’s immediate and Pukete North area, and also over the river in our school’s catchment areas of Flagstaff, the River Road North subdivisions, Rototuna and all other new north city areas. Please help us alert young families of this request …. Our immediate priorities are to …  ensure parents with pre-schoolers ie. 1 – 4 year olds, who are interested in enrolling their child(ren) at Te Rapa Primary School in 2021 – 2023 have contacted our school to register their interest. Their child’s name, D.O.B and address must be on our pre-enrolment database as soon as possible (urgently). NOTE : This is for in-zone families, as well as interested out-of-zone families.  ensure any parents of children residing ‘out of zone’ have been in to complete an enrolment ballot form so their child(ren) can be considered for an out of zone place at Te Rapa Primary for intake #2 this year (Terms 3 & 4 2021) and also intake #1 for next year which is Terms 1 & 2 in 2022. Parents who have their child recorded on our Te Rapa Primary pre-enrolment database are not locked in to this school. They are free to choose another school prior to their child’s 5th birthday, but having the child’s details recorded allows us (as a school) to pre-plan ahead far more accurately than not having their names on the database at all. Please help us by approaching people you know who have pre-schoolers, and ask them to email [email protected] or phone (07) 8492232 to alert Te Rapa that we are a possible primary school option for their child(ren) in the future. High School Students …. At Te Rapa Please talk with your older children about staying away from our school on their “Teacher Only Days” (TODs). It is a distraction for our students when the older children have a day at home because their school has a TOD, and they are choosing to hang around our school. It is Ok to visit officially after school to catch-up with their ex. teachers, but they must arrive after 3pm please and sign in at the office.

Thank you for your continued support of Te Rapa Primary Waikato’s Top School 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019. …… a full primary school where “everyone knows your child’s name” V W Franklin (Principal) and Staff Mathletics - Term 1

Congratulations Room 11!

Our Term 1 Inquiry focussed on learning about being powerful learners. Did you know that we can learn by ourselves and others and that you never stop learning? Being an active listener helps your learning. Room 9 came up with the five finger reminder for helping us to be active listeners.

1. Looking at the person speaking with your eyes and ears.

2. Only one person speaking at a time.

We had an opportunity to learn from Rocco’s Mum who owns Sweet Little Treat-Cakes by Karin (check her out on facebook) after we discovered the photo on the right is not a packet of chips, it is a cake, how clever is that? Room 9 invited her in for a cooking class. Karin demonstrated how to bake muffins and we all iced a cupcake. Karin gave us lots of baking tips. We were powerful learners. Cakes & Inquiry Learning in Room 9

Karin bakes extraordinary cakes. On the last Wednesday of Term 1 Karin came to our class to bake cupcakes. I was lucky to get a second one for my mum since it was her birthday. I think Karin should be on the programmes Extreme Cake Makers and Cupcake Wars. Do you think Karin should be on those shows? By Renee

Last term last week on Wednesday Rocco’s mum came to school to teach us how to make her scrumptious cupcakes. Karin is a really superb baker. She has her own shop called Sweet Little Treats. Karin makes cakes and they are so realistic. She taught us how to create the cupcakes and icing. We had some really delicious icing . I decorated my cupcake with teddy bears, popping candy, cookies and more. You squeeze the top of the icing, twirl it and then the icing comes out and decorates the cupcakes. Mmm Mmm! By Jack

On Wednesday the last week of school term we Room nine had a special person that came with some of her baking materials to passive. It was Karin! Karin has a business called Sweet Little Treats as she makes all sorts of cakes. I love the cakes that she makes. Karin demonstrated how to make the cupcakes then she let us decorate the cupcakes. I decorated my cup cake with tiny teddy bears and some sprinkles. We had to show Te Rapa HEART and be an active listener. By Lockie

On the last Wednesday in Term 1 Karin came to Room 9 for cooking class! After morning tea we marched over to the Hort Centre and Karin taught us how to make her specialty cup cakes. She puts Oreos or marshmallows in them for a surprise “yum”! We decorated some and when mine was fully decorated my cup cake was twice the size it had been! They were scrumptious. Each year we have a lovely group of parents / caregivers who volunteer to help with the school washing. We’re a bit short on help this term and would be grateful if there are volunteers who could help out for the rest of this year. If we get enough parents, it’s normally just once a term that your help would be required. The washing is picked up from the office on a Friday afternoon and returned washed and folded on the following Monday. Please call the school office if you are able to help. Phone 849-2232. Thank you!
