THEO HUFF INTERVIEW By Mike Stephenson Scott and Howard Scott. All of these people really encouraged me and nurtured me. They would pull me to the side and tell me to try this and that and they would bring ideas that have enhanced my performance. From having a first CD out, called ‘Now Is The Time’ in 2014 I’ve just released my new CD this year which is called ‘The New Beginning’ on T.M.P. Records and it’s a big title for me. DESCRIPTORS *Audiodisks; Discographies; *Library Collection Development; *Library Collections; *Optical Disks; *Popular Music; *Public Libraries; Research Libraries; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS *Cleveland Public Library OH ABSTRACT In the 1970s and early 1980s, a few library researchers and scholars made a case for the importance of public libraries' acquisition of popular music, particularly rock music sound recordings. Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.

  • Tyrone Davis Obituary
Feb. 10, 2005--- Tyrone Davis, one of the preeminent figures in Chicago rhythm and blues history, died Wednesday at Hinsdale Hospital. He was 66 years old. Mr. Davis had been in a long- term health care facility since suffering a stroke on Sept. 7. Deploying a vulnerable baritone and a smile of deep style, Mr. Davis had national hits with "Turn Back the Hands of Time," "Can I Change My Mind" and "Turning Point." His romantic sense of conviction helped him place 43 singles on the Billboard R&B charts between 1968 and 1988. Mr. Davis portrayed a larger-than-life exterior, performing in mustard yellow suits, wide-brimmed hats and outrageous fur coats. Even as an adult, Mr. Davis liked to be called by his stage name, "Wonder Boy." Beneath the surface there was the twinkle of a small-town kid. Mr. Davis was born in Greenville, Miss., and at age 19 moved with his divorced father to Saginaw, Mich. He arrived in Chicago in 1950 and became a valet for bluesman Freddie King. Mr. Davis met his longtime friend, Chicago soul-gospel singer Otis Clay, in 1962 when they worked side-by-side in the shipping department of National Castings in Chicago. Their bond was never broken. During Mr. Davis' hospital stay, Clay would visit Mr. Davis two or three times a week, sometimes singing him songs such as Sam Cooke's "Keep Movin' On." "I lost my last biological brother in December 2002," Clay said Wednesday. "Tyrone was like my brother, and I don't mean that in any street terms.
