British Columbia Author: (signature) Paul Alexander Clark (name) ABSTRACT Second homes, classified in the social science literature as residences reserved primarily for leisure-time use, play an important role in the recreational pursuits of Canadians. For the most part, however, existing studies on second homes offer findings that are too general, or limited, for greater understanding of the geographical implications of their acquisition and use. To this end, this thesis investigates the changing utility of second home ownership in a resort environment. Two research hypotheses, derived from models in behavioural geography, are used to examine those factors which affect the changing utility of second home ownership. The first hypothesis states that change in the contextual environment is a significant factor in influencing second home decision making, while the second hypothesis states that second home owners at difering stages of the family lifecycle make signijicantly diferent 1 evaluations about the utility of their second home. I The study area chosen to test these research hypotheses is the Resort Municipality of Whistler, British Columbia. Whistler Resort is a four-season mountain recreation resort situated 120 kilometres north of Vancouver. With a second home population of approximately 5,000 expected to double within ten year most dynamic second home markets at a provincial and arguably a national level. An analysis of the development history of Whistler Resort was conducted in order to examine the influence of changing external forces on decision making concerning the acquisition and use of second homes. This examination addressed the first hypothesis of the thesis. Data gathered from a questionnaire administered to a random sample of second home owners at Whistler Resort provided information on owners' evaluations and use of their second homes, as well as demographic and psychographic characteristics. These data were used to investigate the relationship between stage of lifecycle and second home utility addressed in the second hypothesis. The examination of the changing role of second home ownership resulted in two main findings. First, change in the contextual environment was found to be a significant factori- in influencing second home decision making. Second, it was found that lifecycle stage was only weakly related to second home decision making processes at Whistler Resort. , DEDICATION I would like to dedicate this work in memory of my father, Alexander Robertson Clark, to my mother, Eileen and to my stepfather, David Stark.     Proposed Record of Decision Heavenly Mountain Resort Epic Discovery Project U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit El Dorado and Alpine Counties, California Douglas County, Nevada Background Heavenly Mountain Resort (Heavenly) is a multi-season recreational resort which straddles the Lake Tahoe hydrologic watershed (“Lake Tahoe Basin”) on National Forest System lands near the south shore of Lake Tahoe (Figure 1-1). Heavenly currently operates under a forty-year (40) Ski Area Term Special Use Permit issued by the United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (Forest Service) on May 7, 2002. Unlike many other Forest Service permit holders, extensive resort improvements at Heavenly require multi-agency review and approval including the Forest Service, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and the Lahontan Water Quality Control Board. Heavenly has proposed to expand summer uses within its permit area as part of the proposed Epic Discovery Project. In November 2011, Congress enacted the Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act (SAROEA), which amended the National Forest Ski Area Permit Act of 1986 to clarify the authority of the Secretary of Agriculture regarding additional recreational uses of NFS land subject to ski area permits, and for other purposes (16 USC 487b). The SAROEA provides public policy direction to and authority for the Forest Service to approve facilities to support summer and year-round natural resource-based recreation at ski areas. The Act recognizes the public benefits to be gained from expanding public access to year-round recreation opportunities in developed ski areas, including additional employment and economic activity for communities with public land ski areas.

    COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE November 2020, Sainte-Hélène-du-Lac, France Hebei Tourism Investment chose MND for Jinshanling Golden Mountain ski resort in China MND Group (Euronext Growth - FR0011584549 - ALMND), via its MND SNOW business line, world’s second largest player in the snowmaking market, has won, alongside its Chinese partner Beijing Snow Elan, the international call for tenders to design and build the entire snowmaking system for the Jinshanling Golden Mountain ski resort. Located 120 km north-east of Beijing on the edge of the Great Wall of China, this new ski area is being developed by Hebei Tourism Investment, the state-owned company in charge of tourism development in the Olympic province of Hebei. MND is currently building a detachable gondola lift and a detachable chairlift for the same resort. A new snowmaking €4.8m contract for MND Hebei Tourism Investment, in charge of promoting tourism in the Hebei Olympic region, has ordered from MND SNOW, MND snowmaking business line, and its Chinese partner Beijing Snow Elan, the installation of a complete automated snowmaking solution comprising 120 fan guns and 3 pumping rooms. The total value of this project amounted to €7.8m, of which €4.8m for MND Group. This multi-year project, which will run until 2022, will begin this autumn with engineering work phase. The Hebei region is developing strongly and is positioned as one of the most important skiing destinations in China thanks to its proximity to the capital Beijing, but also thanks to the Winter Olympics of 2022. The Golden Mountain resort will be one of the flagship destinations and will welcome Chinese tourists from the Beijing-Tianjin-Chengde area, a total population of almost 40 million people.
