It is not certain who struck this extremely rare type of gold Dinara, but its type suggests it must have been struck in the period between the Kushans and the Guptas. The most likely contenders are the Magha dynasty who rose to prominence in the area around Kaushambi in the 3rd century AD. Goebl has listed similar coins as type no. 578, but the coin offered here bears many differences with what Goebl illustrates - the most noteworthy being the details of the obverse depiction of a standing king. The king shown here does not have a trident with ribbons next to him nor a chakra behind him, and his posture is very different then the standard 'Kushan' posture seen on Goebl's coins where he is shown offering a sacrifice with one hand while holding the other hand upright. Also, the legend next to the arm more clearly begins with a 'Mi' and there is no trace of a letter under the king's arm, whereas there is a 'Ga' at the same position on all the coins Goebl illustrates. All these factors indicate that this coin presents an 'evolved' typology than Goebl's coins and as such it may have been issued slightly later than those listed by Goebl. Only 2/3 examples of this type were seen in the past years.

Confederacy, Chhatrapati (1674-1680), Silver 1/5th Rupee of 'Velli Fanam', southern type possibly minted at Gingee either during Shivaji's lifetime or by one of his successors during the Mughal- Maratha war of 1689-1700, 2.39g. Realised : ` ...... Estimate : ` 2,50,000 - 3,00,000

Coins of this type were unknown till recent times and therefore do not find mention in K K Maheshwari & Ken Wiggins' 'Maratha Mints and Coinage'. It is possible that 'Velli' (= silver in Tamil) Fanams were struck by the Marathas is response to provide a coinage that bridges the South Indian 'Hon/Fanam'-based system with the North Indian 'rupee'-based system. The three prominent 'dots' that appear above 'Chhatra' is probably a mint-makr for Gingee as the fort complex there is composed of three fortresses. This coin has 'Seev' in the obverse legend, as against 'Shiva' which is a much rarer variety.

Obv: Devanagari legend in three lines within dotted border Shri Raja Shiva, Rev: Devanagari legend in two lines within dotted border Chhatra Pati. About Extremely Fine, Rare.

Realised : ` ...... Estimate : ` 1,500 - 2,000

'Shivarai' paisas of this type, displaying well-engraved legends placed within dotted circles are often identified as Chhatrapati Shivaji's life-time issues. Maheshwari & Wiggins describe this denomination as a '1/2 Paisa', but given the weights of the full units they list are 10.5-13.5., it is evident that the weight of the denomination is almost 2/3rd of the full unit. It is therefore likely that Shivaji struck his coins in fractions of three rather than two, which is complimentary to the predecessor Nizam Shahi and Adil Shahi coinages circulating in his 'Swarajya', the smallest or 1/3rd unit being called a 'Ruka'. The full unit would thus be '3 Rukas' and in docuents the coins are referred to as Tiruka.

Alberto Gomes, in his book 'Moedas Portuguesas' illustrates a Spanish 'Pillar' 8-Real coin - popularly called as 'Spanish Dollar' - which is counterstruck with a similar mark (Gomes 70.01). A counterstruck 'Maria Theresa Dollar' is mentioned by Gomes but he does not illustrate it. While Gomes remarks that the style of the crest is 'similar to the coins of Malacca', on the coin offered here it looks very close to the one encountered on late 18th century Indo-Portuguese copper coins of Diu. The 'Maria Theresa Dollar' was a popular trade coin in the Arabian Peninsula, an area which has had long trading links with Gujarat. It is therefore possible that this coin arrived in Gujarat via Arabia and then was countermarked by the Portuguese in Diu, with a view to make it into a 'Dollar' of their own to facilitate trade further east.

A similar coin was sold at Baldwin's Auctions Ltd et al, The New York Sale XVII (9 Jan 2008), lot 897, estimated at US$2000 and sold for US$ 3500.
