Part one traces Korean education from the past to the present with specific reference to its relevancy to changing milieu, and suggests the direction of educational development. Issues are addressed in section two which focus on humanization, equality in education, improvement of educational contents, methods and facilities, education in basic sci.ences and technology, skill education, vocational education and career guidance, development of high-level manpower and education in preparation for the future. Section three discusses the reform of the educational system, the professionalization of teaching and educational administration, research and development, and educational finance. Concluding statements are offered and present a profile of Korean education in the 2000's. PREFACE A series of hardships and socialdisturbances have hardly given Korean people a breathing spell to preparefor nev challenges of the present century.Despite the dire reality, however, the unusuallyhigh degree of enthusiasm for education and thefirm belief in education as the corner stone fornational deveopment were the powerful drive for educational development to what it istoday.Looking back on the past, the expansion of educational opportunitycontributed to enhancing the quality of people at large, thusLying the foundation for modernizatiou.Behind the splendid facade of accomplishments, therehave been problems which account for educationfalling short of dramatising human potentiality to achieveself-realization. At this crucial hinge of history, we areshoulck:ed wiLki the his- torical mission of perpetuating educational developmentand patching educational deficiencies in preparation for new challengesof the 21rt century.Considering what to be done in preparation for the 21st century, education, among others,figures prominent, for it produces people t ) play leadership role in the shaping of thefuture.Where and how to direct educational developmentform an important question to be addressed at present. Againstthisbackground, a long-term educational development plan was promoted in the context of the Long-term National Develop- ment Plan.The plan reflects an attempt to define the new view of education, to envision what education should be like in the future and to present policy tasks to realize the education envisioned for the future. Initiatedin1983 as part of planning for long-teem national ,',..velopment, this study provided for discussions on matters pertaining to edu,:ation among various walks of life and among scholars repre- senting a wide range of disciplines.The resultofdiscussionwas released in the form of a report.The interim report was published at the end of 1984 and this provided the basis for supplementing and refining which led to the publication of the final report. This report comprises introductory part, three parts which con- stitute the main component and concluding part.In the introductory part,basic positions about major educaflonal issues are elucidated in relation to planning for a long-term educational development. Part I of the main component reviews Korean education in the past and at present, with specific reference to its relevancy to changing milieu, and suggests the direction of educational development.Part II and III are more specific about the development direction b./ nsessing problems and needs and presenting policy tasks to be done. The former deals with humanization of education, equality in education, improve- ment of educational contents, methods and facilities, education in basic sciences and technology, skill education, vocational education and career guidance, developnymt of high-level manpower and educa- tion in prel;aration for the fut.-19-e.The latter concerns educational systems, including the reform of educational system, professionalization of teaching and educational administration, rcsearchand development, and educational finance.The concluding part describes,education envisioned in the year 200C, when assuming that thesuggested policy tasks have been accomplished.     1 Toward a Science of Volition Wolfgang Prinz, Daniel Dennett, and Natalie Sebanz This book aims at improving our understanding of the processes supporting volun- tary action by looking at conditions in which the will is impaired or even breaks down. We use this introductory chapter to prepare the ground for contributions by philoso- phers, psychologists, neuroscientists, and psychiatrists that tackle the experience of acting intentionally, the ability to make decisions and implement one’s goals, and the many ways in which the experience and the exertion of willful behavior can be dis- turbed. In the first part of this introduction, we describe the status of the will as we see it in present and past thinking. In the second part of the chapter, we provide an overview of the contributions in this book. 1.1 Studying the Will When trying to decipher the forbidding complexity of the mind/brain, the standard simplifying assumption is that it is an “input–output system” in which perception goes in and (control of) action eventually comes out. We experimenters then work from the outside in, first getting control and understanding of the peripheral input systems, and postponing difficult questions about the center, which is shrouded in fog and mystery. This makes sense but risks distorting our vision of the whole, since we seldom if ever find ways of even posing questions about the requirements for the more central components that must eventually get transformed into the highest levels of outbound or “inside-out” traffic. This potential for distortion is exacerbated by two further sources of distraction: introspection and the demands of free will.

    International Journal of Korean History(Vol.6, Dec.2004) 113 Women’s Life during the Chosŏn Dynasty Han Hee-sook* 1 Introduction The Chosŏn society was one in which the yangban (aristocracy) wielded tremendous power. The role of women in this society was influenced greatly by the yangban class’ attempts to establish a patriarchal family order and a Confucian-based society. For example, women were forced, in accordance with neo-Confucian ideology, to remain chaste before marriage and barred from remarrying once their husbands had passed away. As far as the marriage system was concerned, the Chosŏn era saw a move away from the old tradition of the man moving into his in-laws house following the wedding (男歸女家婚 namgwiyŏgahon), with the woman now expected to move in with her husband’s family following the marriage (親迎制度 ch΄inyŏng jedo). Moreover, wives were rigidly divided into two categories: legitimate wife (ch΄ŏ) and concubines (ch΄ŏp). This period also saw a change in the legal standing of women with regards to inheritance, as the system was altered from the practice of equal, from a gender standpoint, rights to inheritance, to one in which the eldest son became the sole inheritor. These neo-Confucianist inspired changes contributed to the strengthening of the patriarchal system during the Chosŏn era. Eighty participants received either strong or weak electric shock, depending on the oddness or evenness of spots of a die thrown either by the experimenter (Ex- perimenter-Caused condition) or by the participant himself (Participant- Caused condition). It was found that participants in the Participant-Caused condition evaluated electric shocks less painful, estimated their heart rates to be less faster, and perceived the experimenter more intelligent and favorable than participants in the Experimenter-Caused condition.     Spontaneous Hypnosis in the ÿ or en sic Context John 0.Beahrs, MD "Hypnosis" denotes either specific phenomena (altered volition, perception, cog- nition, and recall) or interpersonal transactions that often elicit them. Basic research leads to paradox: hypnosis is validated, and shown to be dissociative in essence, at the same time that neither its phenomena nor transactions can be separated from those of everyday living without logical absurdity. This paradox can be resolved by assuming that consciousness and volition are complex, occurring simultaneously at many levels in the same waking individual. Hypnotic-like phenomena and transac- tions occur spontaneously, in either covert or overt forms. The former are pervasive, whereas the latter are often associated with psychological trauma. Forensic impli- cations are twofold: for criminal responsibility, and the reliability of eyewitness testimony. Hypnotic-like states and transactions are rarely affirmed as an insanity defense because at some level these subjects are aware of what they are doing and why. Diminished capacity and mitigation of sentence are more appropriate defense strategies. Several conflicted traditions of case law have evolved to protect eyewitness testimony from hypnotic-like distortions in cognition, perception, and memory that can occur either during or outside of formal hypnotic procedures. These include the admissibility of posthypnotic testimony, due process safeguards at eyewitness identification procedures, and the admissibility of expert testimony on the findings of eyewitness research. These areas are inseparable from one another and demand a systematic coordinated approach.     Korea in the Age of Empires Hist 233 (cross-listed with EALC 141) DRAFT: READINGS/REQURIEMENTS SUBJECT TO CHANGE Korea in the Age of Empires (1250–Present) This seminar examines Korea’s historical relations with various imperial powers from the early modern period to the present. Korean states faced off the Mongol invasions in the 1250s, maintained largely peaceable, if delicate relations with the Ming and Qing empires in China from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries, and balanced competing Western imperial powers, but succumbed to Japanese colonization after 1910. After Korea’s liberation in 1945, rivalry between the Soviet Union and the United States led to Korea’s present division between North and South. What explains the differences and similarities between these epochs? How did Korean polities negotiate their political autonomy and cultural identity over this period? What informed the choices of individual Korean actors to resist, appropriate, or collaborate with empire? How do the legacies of this history inform North and South Korea in the international system of today? This course will also interrogate the relationship between international relations and human agency, by thinking about “empire” not only as an imposition by a foreign powers, but also the institutions and ideologies of empire were employed by Korean actors. It will therefore also explore Korean use of the ideologies these empires espoused, such as Confucianism, Modernism, Nationalism, and Communism, in addition to how they were contested among Koreans themselves. It will therefore also pay particular attention to the perspectives of individuals whose lives were intertwined or impacted by these histories.
