Zavaljus brunneus (GYLLENHAL, 1808) (Erotylidae) was found in the Browsk District, Białowieża Primeval Forest, NE Poland. Beetles were reared from a log of a sun-exposed dead Eurasian aspen (Populus tremula). The species is a kleptoparasite associated with prey stored in nests of crabronid wasps (Hymenoptera, Crabronidae). Nests of wasps were located in old galleries of Leptura thoracica (cReutzeR) (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae). Zavaljus brunneus is a new species to the Polish fauna. INTRODUCTION The genus Zavaljus REITTER, 1880, formerly belonging to the family Languriidae as Eicolyctus SAHLBERG, 1919, is now placed in the family Erotylidae, subfamily Xenoscelinae, and is represented by one Palaearctic species (węgRzynowicz 2007), Zavaljus brunneus (GYLLENHAL, 1808). (Sapporo Branch), Kita 1, Nishi 2ῌ11, Chuˆoˆ- ku, Sapporo, 060ῌ0001 Japan῍ Abstract Four new species of Cyphon variabilis species-group, C. putzi sp. nov., C. kotanus sp. nov., C. apoanus sp. nov., and C. sagadanus sp. nov., are described from China, Malaysia and the Philippines respectively. Additional specimens of Cyphon thailandicus RJI6,2004 and Cyphon weigeli KA6JHC>IO:G,2005 are recorded. Introduction Cyphon variavilis species-group (sensu NN=DAB,1972 and YDH=>IDB>,2005) is characterised by the following characteristics: tergites VIIIῌIX rod-like with hemiter- gites, sternite VIII membranous, sternite IX covered with long setae in apical part, tegmen variously shaped, penis tending to reduction and smaller than tegmen. In the Oriental Region, five species of this group have been recorded from the Philippines, Nepal, and Thailand so far (KA6JHC>IO:G,2005 a, b, c; RJI6,2004). In the present paper, I describe four new species from China, Malaysia, and the Philippines respectively. For methodology and abbreviations see YDH=>IDB> (2005). Ochrona Beskidów Zachodnich 6: 58–69, 2015 Materiały do poznania chrząszczy saproksylicznych Gorczańskiego Parku Narodowego Contribution to the knowledge of saproxylic beetles in the Gorce National Park (Western Beskidy, Polish Carpathians) Stanisław Szafraniec Abstract: Results of inventories of saproxylic beetles carried out in the years 2013–2014 in the Gorce National Park are presented. All together 79 species were found including 45 species not reported yet from this protected area. Several of them: Carabus irregularis, Ceruchus chrysomelinus, Denticollis rubens are known to be indicators of na- tural mountain forest ecosystems in Central Europe. Four species are protected by Polish low: Carabus auronitens, C. irregularis, C. variolosus, Ceruchus chrysomelinus and three species are red-listed in Poland: C. irregularis, C. chry- somelinus and Denticollis interpositus. V rámci p edložené doktorské práce byly studovány vybrané potenciáln významné antropické vlivy na biodiverzitu horských bezlesí Hrubého Jeseníku prost ednictvím modelové bioindika ní skupiny brouk (Coleoptera). V prostoru primárního bezlesí arkto- alpinní tundry byl studován vliv sjezdových tratí a invazivní d eviny borovice kle e ( Pinus mugo ) na spole enstva brouk . Na území sekundárních bezlesí podhorských luk a pastvin byl hodnocen vliv zem dlského hospoda ení na brouky a další bezobratlé. Studium vlivu lyža ského areálu prokázalo, že p estože jsou sjezdové trat v alpínské zón zájmového území provozovány zp sobem šetrným k vegetaci, tak pr kazn m ní pvodní spole enstva epigeických brouk . -

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DEAD WOOD AND ARTHROPODS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES by MICHAEL DARRAGH ULYSHEN (Under the Direction of James L. Hanula) ABSTRACT The importance of dead wood to maintaining forest diversity is now widely recognized. However, the habitat associations and sensitivities of many species associated with dead wood remain unknown, making it difficult to develop conservation plans for managed forests. The purpose of this research, conducted on the upper coastal plain of South Carolina, was to better understand the relationships between dead wood and arthropods in the southeastern United States. In a comparison of forest types, more beetle species emerged from logs collected in upland pine-dominated stands than in bottomland hardwood forests. This difference was most pronounced for Quercus nigra L., a species of tree uncommon in upland forests. In a comparison of wood postures, more beetle species emerged from logs than from snags, but a number of species appear to be dependent on snags including several canopy specialists. In a study of saproxylic beetle succession, species richness peaked within the first year of death and declined steadily thereafter. However, a number of species appear to be dependent on highly decayed logs, underscoring the importance of protecting wood at all stages of decay. In a study comparing litter-dwelling arthropod abundance at different distances from dead wood, arthropods were more abundant near dead wood than away from it. In another study, ground- dwelling arthropods and saproxylic beetles were little affected by large-scale manipulations of dead wood in upland pine-dominated forests, possibly due to the suitability of the forests surrounding the plots. -

The formation of the Ancient Tree Forum has brought together a wide range of disciplines involved in tree management and conservation, and has led to important cross-fertilisation of ideas which have enhanced the ecological understanding of the relationships between tree and fungal biology, on the one hand, and saproxylic invertebrates, on the other. This has had tremendous benefits in promoting good conservation practices. Summary The saproxylic beetle Index of Ecological Continuity (IEC) was originally developed as a means of producing a simple statistic which could be used in grading a site for its significance to the conservation of saproxylic (wood-decay) beetles based on ecological considerations rather than rarity. The approach has received good recognition by the conservation agencies and several important sites have been designated as a result of this approach to interpreting site species lists as saproxylic assemblages of ecological significance. The Index is based on a listing of the species thought likely to be the remnants of the saproxylic beetle assemblage of Britain’s post-glacial wildwood, and which have survived through a history of wood pasture management systems in certain refugia. -

Les groupes des diptères, lépidoptères et des arachnides ont été étudiés en priorité. Les investigations menées sur les diptères ont révélé la présence de 5 espèces nouvelles pour la France et de 3 espèces nouvelles pour la Science. Le carabe rarissime Agostenus sulcicollis, fut découvert en 2001 sur le site de la Réserve (J. Coulon com. pers.). Au vu de ces résultats très encourageants, l’extension de l'inventaire à d'autres invertébrés, en particulier forestiers, a été mise en œuvre sur la période 2008-2012. Les premières investigations en direction des coléoptères saproxyliques furent réalisées à l'aide de pièges à émergence installés sur des cavités d'arbres vivants (n = 6) ainsi que des Tentes Malaise1. Les pièges à émergence ont permis la collecte d'espèces de diptères nouvelles pour la Science et également nouvelles pour la France. -

References of the original descriptions are given in full and the actual publication dates were thoroughly checked. Indices to all taxa complete this article and make it a searchable catalogue. He was the curator of Coleoptera, the head of the entomological department and deputy director of the Natural History Museum of Basel, as well as president of the Swiss entomological society. Sketches of his life and work already formed part of the obituaries by BURCKHARDT (2012) and KLAUSNITZER (2012). Details on his Laos projects are given by GEISER & NAGEL (2013). These field visits to Laos were Michel Brancucci’s last major collecting trips. Earlier travels to study the beetle diversity of subtropical and tropical areas focused on Nepal and the northern provinces of Pakistan and India (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Darjeeling, Sikkim) (starting 1977 with Walter Wittmer, see BRANCUCCI 2005). A very large amount of data was available for his scientific research, owing to the extensive material he organised from his own collecting journeys as well as through purchases for the Natural History Museum of Basel. -

Biodiversity of New Zealand beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera). Memoirs of the Museum of Victoria 56(2): 659-666. Approximately 5235 species are described for New Zealand, including 354 introduced. They belong to 82 families in two suborders, Adephaga and Polyphaga. The New Zealand beetle fauna is distinguished by the absence of many major lineages, a high level of endem- ism. which in many groups is over 90% at the specific level and over 43% at the generic level (e.g.. Staphylinidae), and the radiation of many groups of genera and species. The origins of New Zealand's beetle fauna are still poorly understood. They are likely to be varied, includ- ing Gondwanan elements and elements which arrived here by short and long-distance dispersal recently and in the remote past. The size of the New Zealand beetle fauna is con- sistent with species number/land area relationships in other areas around the world.
