  • Jockey Profile
Jockey Profile Berry, Tommy Age: 27. Berry grew up around horses at the Warwick Farm stable of his father Kevin Berry, a former jockey. He began his career in 2007 and was Sydney champion apprentice in 2009/10. After a spell as stable jockey to Gai Waterhouse from April, 2011, he turned freelance in early 2015. His first short-term contract with the Hong Kong Jockey Club ran from 28 April, 2013 until that season's end and yielded 22 wins. Berry became the first HKJC licensed rider to win a G1 on the first day of his contract when successful aboard Military Attack in the 2013 APQEII Cup. In 2014 he became the third rider to notch back-to- back QEII Cup wins thanks to Designs On Rome. His first G1 win came on Epaulette in the 2012 Golden Rose Stakes. He moved to Hong Kong full-time at the start of the 2017/18 season to ride as retained jockey for the John Moore stable. That agreement ended in late March and he was granted a Club licence until the end of the campaign. Honours: Sydney Champion Apprentice (2009/10). APQEII Cup wins (2): Military Attack (2013), Designs On Rome (2014). Chairman’s Sprint Prize win (1): Chautauqua (2016). Other major wins include: Hong Kong Derby (2014 Designs On Rome), Stewards' Cup (2017 Helene Paragon), Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (2017 Helene Paragon), Singapore Airlines International Cup (2014 & 2015 Dan Excel). MONDAY, JANUARY 11, 2015 KEENELAND JANUARY SALE STARTS MONDAY A FEDERAL CASE OVER ONLINE CONTESTS: IS >RICO= A REACH IN DERBYWARS LAWSUIT? By T.D. Thornton When six racetracks owned by The Stronach Group sued the parent company of DerbyWars in a California federal court Dec. 2, the litigation came as no real surprise to anyone who has been following the recent and rapid rise of contest and tournament-style online gaming in the horse racing industry. Much like the larger nationwide debate over the legality of fantasy team sports gaming, there are no clear answers to myriad gray-area questions about online horse racing contests. Are entities that collect entry fees and pay back prize money based on the aggregate use of individual race results usurping money from racing=s traditional pari-mutuel profit model? Known as the Turf World Championships, the second Sunday in December is the world’s year-end Group 1 extravaganza, the final confluence of elite international talent channelled into four great races. The LONGINES Hong Kong Cup (HK$28 million), LONGINES Hong Kong Mile (HK$25 million), LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint (HK$22 million) and LONGINES Hong Kong Vase (HK$20 million) are worth a combined HK$95 million. The event draws leading horses, jockeys, trainers and owners from around the globe to compete; the world’s media descends and tens of thousands of racing fans turn out to cheer on their heroes, all creating a vibrant and exciting atmosphere at Sha Tin Racecourse. It was on 24 January, 1988, that the Hong Kong International Races came into being. That pioneering race day was a long way removed from the epic programme we know today, but it was an important first step towards Hong Kong becoming a renowned venue for world class horseracing.
