LE11 3PR (01509-214711) ORCHIDS AND RARE PLANTS OF HERBERT’S MEADOW One of the wildlife spectacles of Charnwood Forest is surely Herbert’s Meadow at orchid-time, early June. As we might expect in a semi-natural habitat, the abundance of orchids varies from year to year - 2011 seems to be a very good year indeed. Five species have been recorded at the site but one, the Green-winged Orchid Anacamptis morio, has not been seen since 1974. The two most abundant are the Common Spotted-orchid Dactylorhiza fuchsii and the Heath Spotted-orchid Dactylorhiza maculata ssp. ericetorum. There must now be thousands of each. In both species the leaves are generally spotted and the flower colour ranges from white to deep IN THIS EDITION pink, though the Heath-spotted has a tendency to be white in our local populations. The petals are CLASSIFIED RECORDS usually marked with pink streaks and dots, but what distinguishes the two species is not the colour Ÿ or markings, but the shape of the lower petal, or Mammals Page 3 lip. Common-spotted has three lobes of more-or- less equal size; whereas Heath Spotted has a Ÿ Birds Page 4 middle lobe that is distinctly smaller than the side lobes. It is not unusual to find intermediate Ÿ Reptiles and Amphibians Page 9 specimens – some of which may be genuine hybrids. I know of two plants of Bee Orchid Ophrys Ÿ Fish Page 10 apifera, the first of which appeared in 1998, flowering again in 2001, 2007 and 2008.

    Griffydam Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery Audit Carried out by Samuel T Stewart 2013 The older part of Griffydam Wesleyan Methodist Chapel Cemetery is of significant historical importance, and as far as the writer is aware, no old burial records exist for this. It was therefore agreed with the Rev Alan Dawson, that an audit should be carried out for those gravestones that are currently accessible and readable. This audit should also prove useful in providing information for those who are researching their ancestors, who may be buried there. It was decided not to audit the relatively recent burial area D at this time, as these deaths will have been registered in the normal way. Although the Chapel is now closed, the cemetery remains open for new burials. It should be remembered, that burials took place here from a wide area, such as Coleorton, Peggs Green, Breedon, Lount, Swannington, Worthington, Stordon Grange and Newbold for example, as well as Griffydam. The path through the cemetery provides a natural boundary between areas A / B and C / D. However, due to the difficulty in defining the exact boundary lines in the other direction, there may be some slight overlap of grave stones on the boundaries for A and C, however, there is an old path line which can still be discerned. Together with the information given below for gravestones in each area, it should only take a short time to locate a particular one. The Chapel has now been sold, and will be converted into a private residence. Some of the gravestones situated on land in close proximity to the Chapel, which has been allocated to the purchaser will be moved to a specified area at a later date.

  • Griffydam Brickworks Supplement
    THE BRICKWORKS ON BREEDON BRAND - KNOWN LOCALLY AS GRIFFYDAM BRICKWORKS BY SAMUEL T STEWART – NOVEMBER 2020 FRONT COVER PHOTOGRAPHS These show the remains of an updraft “Scotch Kiln” which still exists on the site of the former Brickworks on the “Bottom Brand”. PREFACE In the publication entitled “A Social and Industrial History of Griffydam and Peggs Green” (June 2018) by Samuel T Stewart, a feature is included on the history of brick making at what was referred to locally as Griffydam Brickworks. These were located on “Breedon Brand” which was still in Breedon parish in 1884. The 1881/2 surveyed, 1885 published, 6 inch O/S map, confirms that too separate brickworks / brick yards were in operation on “Breedon Brand” at that time. Subsequent research has identified the proprietors / tenants of the brickyards over a period of at least 11 years. These were William Hoult, Joseph Smart & Son and Henry Toon. William Hoult operated one of the brickworks and the other was operated by Joseph Smart & Son followed by Henry Toon. The bottom brickyard is the one thought to have been worked by Joseph Smart followed by William Toon, although there is no concrete proof of that. It has not proved possible to identify proprietors / tenants of either brickyards prior to c.1850 with any certainty. The Brickworks have always been known locally as Griffydam Brickworks, but no evidence has been found to prove they were called that on official documents. However, later bricks were impressed with Griffydam, and in the case of William Toon, with his name also. It is seen here from the south around 1900. Clifford marriages and baptisms at Breedon go back to 1606. Twelve Cliffords were buried in the churchyard between 1626 and 1804. John Clifford 1 November 2020 John Clifford (1782-1845) and his family in north-west Leicestershire Origins Contents In each of our family trees, sixty-four positions are occupied by our 4x great grandparents, six generations before us. We receive our surname from just one of the sixty-four, along with a mere 1.5625% of our genetic inheritance. Tracing the transmission of a single surname, therefore, creates the illusion of a more significant connection than really exists. Nonetheless, it is a peg on which to hang interesting lines of enquiry about the lives of the people to whom we are related, ordinary or otherwise, just like those in everyone’s families. For those who are middle-aged in the early twenty-first century, six generations take us back to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
