This is the seventh title in the Grand Theft Auto series, as well as a sequel to the 2002 Game of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It was released in October 2004 for PlayStation 2, and in June 2005 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox. The game, set in an open-world environment that players can explore and interact with at leisure, focuses on the story of former gangster Carl C.J. Johnson, who returns home in the wake of his mother's death, only to take part in a long journey that sees him explore the fictional American state of San Andreas, which is largely based on California and Nevada. The game has references to many of the world's real elements, such as its cities, regions and attractions, with a plot largely based on several real events in Los Angeles in the early 1990s, including the rivalry between real street gangs, the 1980s - early 1990s, the Los Angeles police scandal and the Los Angeles riots in 1992. Unlike its predecessor, San Andreas brought with it new gameplay elements that would later be included in future titles, including RPG-style MECHANICS, customization options with both clothing and car appearances, a wide range of activities and mini-games, and the inclusion of gambling. Considered by many reviewers to be one of the greatest video games ever made, San Andreas received critical acclaim, with praise aimed at his music, history and gameplay, but criticized for its graphics and some aspects of its management. It became the best-selling video game of 2004, as well as of the best-selling video games of all time. More than 27.5 million were sold Worldwide in 2011; It remains the best-selling PlayStation 2 game of all time. The game, like its predecessors, is cited as a benchmark in video games for its far-reaching influence in the industry. However, the violence and sexual content of San Andreas has been a source of great public concern and controversy. In particular, the software, called Hot Coffee mod, unlocked a previously hidden sex scene. The high-definition remastered version received physical release for both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 in 2015. In June 2018, the game was added to the Xbox One Backward Compatible library. San Andreas has been ported to various other platforms and services such as OS X, Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and mobile devices (iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Fire OS). The next major entry in the series, Grand Theft Auto IV, was released in April 2008. The Gameplay Player driving Banshee to The Grove Street cul-de-sac in Los Santos this afternoon. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is an adventure game with role-playing and stealth elements. Structured just like the previous two games in the series, the main gameplay consists of elements of a third-person shooter and driving game that gives the player a large, open-world environment in which to move around. On foot, the player's character is able to walk, run, run, swim, climb and jump, as well as use weapons and various forms of hand-wringing combat. The player can drive a variety of vehicles including cars, buses, semi-finished products, boats, planes, helicopters, trains, tanks, motorcycles and bicycles. The player can also import vehicles in addition to stealing them. An open, non-linear environment allows the player to explore and choose how he wants to play the game. While story missions are needed to progress through the game and unlock certain cities and content, the player can complete them at his leisure. Without taking on a plot mission, the player is free to roam the cities and rural areas of San Andreas, eat in restaurants, or cause chaos by attacking people and causing destruction. Creating chaos can attract unwanted and potentially fatal attention from the authorities. The more chaos is caused, the stronger the response: The police will handle minor infractions (attacking pedestrians, pointing guns at people, stealing vehicles, manslaughter, etc.), while SWAT teams, the FBI and the military respond to a higher level of wanted. The player can take part in various additional side missions that can enhance their character's attributes or provide other sources of income. Traditional spin-off missions of past Grand Theft Auto games included such as disembarking taxi passengers, putting out fires, driving the injured to hospital, and fighting crime like Supplements include theft with hacking missions, pimping missions, trucks and train driving missions requiring the player to make deliveries on time, and driving/flying/boating/cycling schools that help the player learn skills and techniques to use in their respective vehicles. Not all locations are open to the player at the beginning of the game. Some places, such as mod garages, restaurants, gyms and shops, become available only after the completion of specific missions. Similarly, for the first part of the game, only Los Santos and its surrounding suburbs are available for exploration; the unblocking of other cities and rural areas once again requires the completion of specific missions. If a player travels to locked places at the beginning of the game, they will attract the attention of SWAT teams, police and police-controlled Gidras if on the plane. Unlike Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City, which needed to load screens when a player moved between different areas of the city, San Andreas does not have download time when the player is on the move. The only loading screens in the game are for cutting out scenes and interiors. Other differences between San Andreas and its predecessors include the transition from single player to multiplayer Rampage missions (though not in the PC version), as well as replacing hidden packages with spray paint tags, hidden camera shots, forged, and oysters to discover. Camera, wrestling, and targeting controls have been redesigned to incorporate concepts from another Rockstar game, Hunting, including various stealth elements, as well as improved targeted crosshairs and a targeted health indicator that varies from green to red to black as the health goal decreases. The PC version of the game implements mouse chords: the player must hold the right mouse button to activate the crosshairs, and then press or hold the left mouse button to shoot or use an item, such as a camera. The player has a shootout with members of the enemy gang. For the first time in the series, players can swim and climb walls. The ability to swim and dive underwater also has a big impact on the player, as water is no longer an impassable barrier that kills the player outright (although it is possible to drown). For greater firepower, the player can also double wield a firearm or perform drive-by shooting with multiple gang members who may be recruited to follow the player. Because of the size of San Andreas, the point of path restraint on the HUD map can be set, helping the player to reach the destination. Role-playing features in the development of the Rockstar character emphasized the personalization of the main character by adding role elements of video games. Clothes, accessories, haircuts, jewelry and tattoos are available for purchase by the player, and have more of an impact on the reaction of non-needle characters than the clothes in Vice CJ CJ's respect level his fellow recruits and street friends vary depending on his appearance and actions, as does his relationship with his girlfriends. The player needs to make sure that CJ eats to stay healthy and exercise adequately. The balance of food and physical activity affects its appearance and physical qualities. San Andreas tracks have acquired skills in areas such as driving, firearm handling, endurance and lung capacity, which are improved by in-game use. CJ can learn three different styles of arm fighting (boxing, kickboxing and kung fu) in gyms in each of the game's three cities. CJ can talk to some pedestrians in the game, responding either negatively or positively. According to Rockstar, there are about 4,200 lines of conversational dialogue for CJ when cutscenes are excluded. The total in the game is 212 different cars compared to about 60 in Grand Theft Auto III. New additions include bikes, combine, janitor, jetpack, and trailers, among others. The physics of the car and features are similar to the Midnight Club series of street racing games, allowing much more vehicle control in the air, as well as nitrous upgrades and aesthetic changes. There are several different classes of vehicles that serve different purposes.

Journal for Computer Game Culture. 2010; 4 (2), p. 197-213 Removing the Checks and Balances That Hamper Democracy: Play and the Counter-hegemonic Contradictions of Grand Theft Auto IV MARC OUELLETTE The American Dream’s a fairy tale. It was never meant to be taken literally. —Bobby Jefferson, Secretary of Security Enforcement in Liberty City (Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar North 2008) Grand Theft Auto IV (Rockstar North 2008) continues the franchise's seeming secondary function of providing an ongoing critique of U.S. foreign and domestic habits and policies. Indeed, with its collection of readily recognizable repurposed icons, Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV) elevates its satirical attack on the “post-9/11” sensibilities of the U.S. to roughly equal status with the actual game play. However, in its critique of the contradictory nature of these sensibilities, the game’s satire is equally contradictory. Thus, while the game is fun and frequently funny, the point of the textual play is often overwhelmed by a reliance on reinscribed icons and reversions to ribaldry. The effect is heightened, and made more unsettling, by the game’s setting in Liberty City, a fictional gameworld version of New York City which was introduced in Grand Theft Auto III (DMA Design 2001). Everything seems subject to some sort of satire, most notably in the multiple levels of play at work in the game’s take on Lady Liberty, the Statue of Happiness.

THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY The video game industry (often referred to as interactive entertainment) is the economic sector involved with the development, marketing and sales of video games. It encompasses dozens of job disciplines and employs thousands of people worldwide. Game industry value chain The game industry value chain is made up of six connected and distinctive layers: 1. Capital and publishing layer: involved in paying for development of new titles and seeking returns through licensing of the titles. 2. Product and talent layer: includes developers, designers and artists, who may be working under individual contracts or as part of in-house development teams. 3. Production and tools layer: generates content production tools, game development middleware, customizable game engines, and production management tools. 4. Distribution layer: or the "publishing" industry, involved in generating and marketing catalogs of games for retail and online distribution. 5. Hardware (or Virtual Machine or Software Platform) layer: or the providers of the underlying platform, which may be console-based, accessed through online media, or accessed through mobile devices such as the iPhone. This layer now includes non-hardware platforms such as virtual machines (e.g. Java or Flash), or software platforms such as browsers or even further Facebook, etc. 6. • PAJ80 C 10 Murray
HIGH ART/LOW LIFE The Art of Playing Grand Theft Auto Soraya Murray am not a thug . but I play one on my PlayStation. Armed with a cache of weapons that would make your garden-variety sociopath blush with envy, I slip I into a simulated territory, in the hopes of conquering the underworld that is Grand Theft Auto. While on one level Rockstar Games’s Grand Theft Auto series (GTA) is all kitschy, gratuitous violence for entertainment purposes, it is also a masterpiece of interactive design. Arguably, it presents one of the most sophisticated developments in commercial video gaming to render a highly traversable urban space, one in which a player performs actions with a tremendous degree of freedom and unscripted spontaneity. This accounts for its wild popularity in the gaming market. The best-selling video game in America in 2001, GTA III’s success was usurped only by the release of the game’s next evolution, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which became the year’s bestseller in 2002. With the October 2004 release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, likely the most anticipated game of the year, Rockstar has once again set the gaming world on fire with its latest sprawling work of twisted genius. Electronic games, with their technological roots in the military-industrial complex, are commonly associated with childish play and lowbrow entertainment for the antisocial—all of which damages their credibility as objects of serious cultural consideration. When critics of violent electronic games view Grand Theft Auto, they see a lurid delivery device for the militaristic culture of violence—one that targets the impressionable minds of children.1 And in terms of the gore factor, extreme vulgarity, and the sheer gall of game designers, there probably isn’t anything detractors could say about the game that wouldn’t be true.
