Shaquille O'Neal's autographs of this set are numbered in series by today's standards, but the standard numbers and autographs of the rookies were really revolutionary at the time, as you don't see any of the major manufacturers doing it regularly for several years. I remember seeing Shaquille O'Neal selling for large sums of money in 1992 when I was a kid. On that day, people usually paid more for Shaq's insert cards than real rookie cards as they were rarer. The 1992-93 Stadium Club Beam Team and Fleer Ultra Rejectors 1992-93 inserts were two of the many I remember seeing on sale in the $300 range in hobby stores in 1992-1993. His RC Upper Deck Trade card was very popular at the time, partly because it was a ransom card. For some, Shaq RC cards exemplify the 'sports card boom' and subsequent bust of the 90s. Many people were burned paying too much for the cards that ended up plummeting in value, although Shaq had one of the greatest careers of all time. No other player changed the game more than Shaq did during his reign in the NBA. Zone defenses, stronger scoreboards, the first foul in the last two minutes, and other subtle rule changes have been put in place due to Shaq's dominance in the game. Compared to Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and other dominant players, Shaq's cards seem to have more room to climb. Overlooked or not, this should be in your collection asap!1992-1993 Classic Draft Picks Yellow JerseySe like the previous card from the same set, this features a young Shaq in the process of absolutely punishing the edge. The number doesn't match, but it certainly looks like Grant Hill in the background. Whoever it is, it can be said that they are in awe of Shaqs power.1992-1993 Classic Draft Picks GoldAnother Shaq rookie card from Classic Draft Picks. Looks like these guys were trying to print as many of this guy as possible. And who could blame them? Everyone knew he was going to be an all-time great. In any case, this takes its name from the classic gold stripe along its right edge. Unfortunately, you don't see this pop-up variation too often, but when it does, it can be just as valuable as the two we just listed.1992-1993 Stadium Club Beam Team (Buy on eBay)This is a very popular card that you shouldn't have any problem selling or buying at auction. The only question is: can you come with the dough? In addition to being one of the most popular is also one of the most valuable Shaq rookie cards. Above all, if it is a 9 or higher on the classification scale. The card also earns collection points to be part of the first ever Stadium Club set for basketball cards (those sap-reeking tree baseball cards took the industry by storm the year before).1992-1993 Upper Deck (Buy this Shaq rookie card on eBay)Upper Deck names carried a huge amount of weight in the early 1990s. So it only makes sense to have a card that features the huge amount of weight that is Shaquille O'Neal exploding in the air for a patented Shaq slam dunk.1992-1993 Topps (Find Bargain on eBay)Probably the most collectible of all Shaq rookie cards, the 1992-1993 Topps version features a hungry Shaq posted under the edge. Clearly the man wants the rock (just take a look at that massive hand/outstretched arm combo!). However, it is a bit tamer and replaces the crushed rim-bending with a more passive put-back. Or at least let's say it's a picture of a block. Why else do they deno their rejectionors? Sounds more like a bounce, honestly. No more digressions. It is an action-packed card that is incredibly affordable compared to some of the others on this list. Ecker Department of Mathematics University of Northern Iowa Cedar Falls, Iowa 50614-0506 USA Received: November 6, 2003 Accepted: December 1, 2003 ABSTRACT We examine the evolution of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA’s) Draft Lottery by showing how the changes implemented by the Board of Governors have impacted the probabilities of obtaining top picks in the ensuing draft lottery. We explore how these changes have impacted the team with the worst record and also investigate the conditional probabilities of the fourth worst team receiving the third pick. These calculations are conditioned upon two specified teams receiving the first two selections. We show that the probability of the fourth worst team receiving the third pick can be made unconditionally. We calculate the probabilities for the fourth worst team to move up in the draft to receive either the first, second, or third selections, along with its chance of keeping the fourth pick or even dropping in the draft. We find there is a higher chance for the fourth worst team to drop to the fifth, sixth or seventh position than to stay at the fourth position or move up. I. NBA Draft Pick Valuation Abstract In this research paper, the discussion is targeted towards understanding the statistical analyses associated with the determining of draft pick success in the National Basketball Association. The three methodologies in question are Player Efficiency Rating and standard statistical categories, Roland Beech’s Rating System, and Win Shares. Through the discussion of these three separate methods, the research aims to give a holistic assessment of which study is the most likely to predict a player’s success post-draft. Through the paper, the ideas presented before, during, and after research are discussed with an emphasis on educating the reader on the field of predictive analytics and the role it plays in sports business. In its conclusion, the paper summarizes not that one methodology is superior to the others, but that the most conclusive method is one where all three approaches are analyzed and combined. The NBA draft solves this issue, offering a process by which teams can select (usually young) players who wish to join the league, sign them, and add them to their rosters, creating a constant influx of new talent. While the draft has been expanded and refined, the question remains, what factors should dictate a players eligibility to enter the draft? NBA Draft Logistics The NBA draft occurs in late June, once the regular season, and playoffs have concluded.     unlevel playing fields institutional inequality in college basketball brian powell February 2020 Introduction Inspired by investigations into institutional inequality in academic hiring and publishing, this report examines the distribution of colleges attended by NBA draftees to determine if certain institutions are disproportionately more likely to produce successful players. I explore two types of questions: 1. inequality How do athletics fare with respect to academics in terms of institutional concentration? 2. quality Does attending a “top school” translate into higher performance at the professional level? Two economic metrics - the Gini coefficient and the CR10 - are used to quantify inequality, while NBA performance is measured using the advanced stat called Value Over Replacement Player (VORP). Overall, my findings suggest that athletics are significantly less institutionally concentrated than academics, but that athletic concentration has undergone an important shift upwards since 2006. I hypothesize that this is due to a rule change in the NBA prohibiting high school students from directly entering the draft. Thus, an inquiry into the fairness of college athletics has led to an insight into an unintended consequence of a rule designed to protect younger players. The effect is a growing concentration of power among a fewer number of elite schools. Considering the financial benefits of boasting a top basketball program and the many controversies afflicting the NCAA and its constituents, this rise in inequality may provide evidence that college basketball offers yet another example of the rich-getting-richer world we increasingly inhabit. Finally, despite this rise in concentration, I show that top schools contribute only modest effects to overall player performance.
