4 Project PRAIRIE'S OWN brief . In October 2017 we were introduced to the existing Cold Lake staging site of the Iron Horse Trail and asked to re-imagine the staging area in a way that would in- crease the site users and positioned Cold Lake Terminal as a sought-after destina- tion for the Iron Horse Trail users. Provided with a blank slate, we've prepared a project methodology that includes proposing a vision for the overall site all the way to the detailed site design. Given the extend and location of the site, we looked at ways to maximize the return on investment for the City of Cold Lake, by providing recreational uses for the resi- dents and outside visitors. The following report contains a summary of our findings and the proposed vision for the site that we think will maximize the use of the land, contributing in a signifi- . cant way to the recreational opportunities offered by the City of Cold Lake. Fig. Site location within Cold Lake

PROJECT APPROACH PARTICIPATORY DESIGN

Inspired by the successful Kinosoo Beach project process, we have envisioned a similar participatory work methodology that would allow project stake- holders and Cold Lake residents alike to have share their ideas for the site.

Our process began by bringing a multidisciplinary group of professionals together for a round-table discussion. The focus was to identify potential recre- ation opportunities for the site and what makes the site unique. The outcome was that while the development should serve as a staging area for the trail it should focus more on the Community of Cold Lake first. This will create a more exciting, well used place that is appealing for visitors and residents.

The following report offers a vision for the potential uses and qualities of the overall site.

8 Project PRAIRIE'S OWN PRAIRIE'S OWN To make it "prairie's own", and position it as a sought-after location strategy. throughout the prairies, we came up with the idea of a winter cable-park installation, that would respond to the site's topographical limitations, in a creative way. The idea was inspired by the traditional prairie activity of THE BIGGER PICTURE pulling a skier behind a horse drawn carriage or snowmobile. Cable parks are a new, up-and-coming recreational trend, adapted from In preparation for the project strategy, we have interpreted the data wake-boards facilities. Evoking in this solution both lakeland and prairie gathered and presented in the previous chapter, mainly regarding the cultural practices, the cable park will celebrate the very nature of the recreational opportunities at the regional and local scale. This analysis Cold Lake's land typology. revealed that in the context of local population, creating a park that will compete with the popular Kinoosoo Beach would be less desirable. Also, apart from the Iron Horse staging area, the new park would struggle to compete with the summer recreational opportunities within a 100 km radi- us of Cold Lake, such as campgrounds, lakes, rivers, etc.

For this reason, the idea of a winter park, a unique, prairie’s own winter park emerged. Such a park would create a more opportune association with the Iron Horse Staging Station. ....

The next question we've asked ourselves was: what would make this site special and differentiate it from other local and regional parks and ? facilities? Reflecting upon this question, the dual urban& natural aspect of this area came to mind. These site characteristics inspired us to think about proposing a unique, prairie-specific park, that is offering winter-long outdoor activities to everyone, for all ages and walks of life. Due to its urban setting, the park is accessible by public transit, making it possible for everyone to reach, participate or just enjoy their stay.

Fig. Painting by William Kurelek ▼ Our vision for the park is grounded in the intent of proposing solutions that are site specific and celebrate the local landscape: the prairie. Inspired by the work of William Kurelek and the determination of young prairieans to make the most out of the land, the Cable Park emerged as a perfect response for both winter and summer fun. 9 PROJECT APPROACH PRAIRIE'S OWN

We have approached the site planning by organizing the site in four areas, based on the distance from the core and grouped the activities on a spectrum ranging from short-stay, family-oriented towards the core, to long-range, individual/ small group activities at the extremities.

Short-term park users: organized activities: skating, bbq, sitting, Z1: small kids, families less equipped for winter, urban visitors SITE

Half/ day-use park users: long-range activities: horseback riding, Z3: snowmobile, cross-country skiing, carriage rides to bridge 3-5 km

SPATIAL STRATEGY SPATIAL ORGANIZATION OF THE SITE

The spatial strategy for the site is organizd from an Industrial Urban-to-Natural and Residential-to-Industrial spectrum, and locates the core of the envisioned park between the Z1A and Z1B zones. By doing so, the new staging area will Natural SITE Urban be in the proximity of the park core, giving opportunity to the IHT users to enjoy the local offering, all while being located towards the industrial area. With this strategy, the Residential Staging Station becomes in itself an important attraction of the park, but can also exist independently, while construction follows development phases. 39 SITE PROGRAMMING PRAIRIE'S OWN LIGHT

One of the most significant additions to the outdoor recreation in winter cities for the last de- cade is the use of light. Be it in the form of public art, light installations or simply enhanced street lighting, the public realm comes to life during long winter nights, encouraging people to engage in healthy activities, promoting social interaction and supporting local businesses. For the Iron Horse Staging Station we envision light installations to be at the heart of the public realm.
