The Coinage of 1893
THE COINAGE OF 1893 MARK STOCKER 1. The need for a new coinage THE origins of the coinage designs of 1893 essentially stemmed from dissatisfaction with the Jubilee coinage of 1887. The prime target of criticism had been Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm's effigy of Queen Victoria which showed her wearing what was widely regarded as an absurdly small crown, in danger of slipping off the back of her head (PI. 7, l).1 The reverse designs were also unpopular because of their failure to specify values. Accordingly, there was widespread demand for a replacement coinage as soon as expediency permitted. In January 1888, scarcely six months after the Jubilee coinage had appeared, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Goschen, submitted a pattern coin with a new design to Queen Victoria. This was accompanied by a memorandum from Charles Fremantle, Deputy Master of the Royal Mint, 'with a view to the production of a more satisfactory coin than was attained in the Jubilee issue'.2 Before proceeding further, the Queen's approval was necessary. The absence of documentation suggests this was not forthcoming; memories of derisive cartoons in Punch and Fun, especially the latter's obverse inscription, 'Victoria Disgraceful', doubtless still rankled.3 In his next recorded letter on the subject in September 1889, Goschen stated 'As the general discussion on the Jubilee coinage had subsided, and the public appeared to have got used to the new coin, I thought that it might possibly be best to let the matter rest for a while.'4 Now he felt that it was time to readdress the question. -

Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest, note of case hearing on 12 December 2018: The Goodwood Cup by Edward Barnard & Sons (Case 20, 2018-19) Application 1. The Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest (RCEWA) met on 12 December 2018 to consider an application to export the Goodwood Cup by Edward Barnard & Sons. The value shown on the export licence application was £161,500 which represented price at which the present owner had bought the item through a private sale. The expert adviser had objected to the export of the cup under the second and third Waverley criteria on the grounds that its departure from the UK would be a misfortune because (ii) it was of outstanding aesthetic importance and (iii) it was of outstanding significance for the study of a particular branch of art, learning or history. 2. Seven of the regular eight RCEWA members were present and were joined by two independent assessors, acting as temporary members of the Reviewing Committee. 3. The applicant confirmed that the value did not include VAT and that VAT of £32,300 would be payable in the event of a UK sale. The applicant also confirmed that the owner understood the circumstances under which an export licence might be refused and that, if the decision on the licence was deferred, the owner would allow the cup to be displayed for fundraising. Expert’s submission 4. The expert adviser had provided a written submission stating that the 1869 Goodwood Racing Trophy was an outstanding monumental example from the best period of manufacture of sporting trophies - from 1830s to 1870s noted as ‘a national art and a national manufacture.’ A period in which ‘some of the grandest, largest and technically unmatchable sporting trophies are derived.’ Barnard was one of the most prolific manufacturers - and this trophy was one of their most technically proficient. -

On Stage at the Theatre of State: The Monuments and Memorials in Parliament Square, London STUART JAMES BURCH A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of The Nottingham Trent University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2003 Abstract This thesis concerns Parliament Square in the City of Westminster, London. It is situated to the west of the Houses of Parliament (or New Palace at Westminster) and to the north of St. Margaret’s Church and Westminster Abbey. This urban space was first cleared at the start of the nineteenth-century and became a “square” in the 1860s according to designs by Edward Middleton Barry (1830-80). It was replanned by George Grey Wornum (1888-1957) in association with the Festival of Britain (1951). In 1998 Norman Foster and Partners drew up an (as yet) unrealised scheme to pedestrianise the south side closest to the Abbey. From the outset it was intended to erect statues of statesmen (sic) in this locale. The text examines processes of commissioning, execution, inauguration and reaction to memorials in this vicinity. These include: George Canning (Richard Westmacott, 1832), Richard I (Carlo Marochetti, 1851-66), Sir Robert Peel (Marochetti, 1853-67; Matthew Noble, 1876), Thomas Fowell Buxton (Samuel Sanders Teulon, 1865), fourteenth Earl of Derby (Matthew Noble, 1874), third Viscount Palmerston (Thomas Woolner, 1876), Benjamin Disraeli (Mario Raggi, 1883), Oliver Cromwell (William Hamo Thornycroft, 1899), Abraham Lincoln (Augustus Saint-Gaudens, 1887/1920), Emmeline Pankhurst (Arthur George Walker, 1930), Jan Christian Smuts (Jacob Epstein, 1956) and Winston Churchill (Ivor Roberts-Jones, 1973) as well as possible future commemorations to David Lloyd George and Margaret Thatcher.
