Brief History of Transpersonal Psychology Stanislav Grof Grof Transpersonal Training Mill Valley, CA, USA The International Transpersonal Association (ITA) was formed in 1978 for the purposes of promoting education and research in transpersonal subjects, as well as sponsoring global conferences for the international transpersonal community. The association was subsequently dissolved in 2004, but is now in the process of being reactivated and revitalized. INTRODUCTION For centuries, traditional healers worldwide have practiced methods of energy healing, viewing the body as a complex energy system with energy flowing through or over its surface (Rakel, 2007). Until recently, the Western world largely ignored the Eastern interpretation of humans as energy beings. However, times have changed dramatically and an exciting and promising new branch of academic inquiry and clinical research is opening in the area of energy healing (Oschman, 2000; Trivieri & Anderson, 2002). Scientists and energy therapists around the world have made discoveries that will forever alter our picture of human energetics. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is conducting research in areas such as energy healing and prayer, and major U.S. academic institutions are conducting large clinical trials in these areas. Approaches in exploring the concepts of life force and healing energy that previously appeared to compete or conflict have now been found to support each other. Letting go of the ego as a spiritual path Victor Ashear 2/16/20 The talk Lisa read at the start of this month’s theme made a very important point about surrender that I want to expand on today. The point was that when we let go of our needs for control and perfection we open ourselves to realities and opportunities that lie beyond ourselves. I also want to expand on what Bill shared last Sunday when he talked about how when we are able to let go of our ego we reach a deeper and more authentic self. I spoke a few years ago about “the five big theological questions” that some of you may remember. One of those big theological questions that all religions seek to answer is the question of “ontology.” Ontology is the subject of who we are as human beings; what is the nature of our essence or most vital character? Sometimes the question is posed as, “whose are we?” because no one’s identity exists independently of others. We are defined by our relationships, are we not? Today I want to explore the topic of who we are spiritually in terms of “letting go/surrender.” Part of what I want to say is that it is not easy to discover who we are in a spiritual sense, and that to get there we need to let go of our conventional ways of thinking about our identity or self-concept. Dr. Didi Firman Transpersonal Orientation Article THE TRANSPERSONAL DIMENSION Defining transpersonal as simply that which goes beyond the individual or personal, it could be hypothesized that all counselors are, at least in part, transpersonal in their orientation. Vaughan noted that transpersonal psychology is “an open-ended endeavor to facilitate human growth and expand awareness beyond limits implied by most traditional Western models of mental health ”. Transpersonal psychology becomes then, a holistic perspective, focusing on the whole spectrum of human experience, with an eye towards holding a wider view, one that sees spiritual issues with equal relevance to personality and family of origin issues. PURPOSE, MEANING AND VALUES Psychosynthesis concerns itself with the arena of the transpersonal, first and foremost, through an ongoing consideration of meaning, purpose and values in the individual’s life. STAGES OF PSYCHOSYNTHESIS Where psychosynthesis begins to show its transpersonal colors is in the ‘last’ stage of work. Firman and Gila (2002) note that these stages “describe how we may then become conscious of, and respond to, the deeper motivations and meanings in our lives, the source of which is termed the Self ” Assagioli (2000) referred to these stages as “Realization of One’s True Self” and “psychosynthesis ” (pp.21-23). BI-FOCAL VISION Key here is the counselor’s ability to see with wide vision, what is called bifocal vision in psychosynthesis (Whitmore, 2004). Bifocal vision invites the practitioner to see the client through the lens of that client’s presenting issues, diagnoses or problems, while at the same time seeing that person as a soul in search of realization. -

Transpersonal Sociology: Origins, Development, and Theory Ryan Rominger1 Harris Friedman Sofia University University of Florida Palo Alto, CA, USA Gainesville, FL, USA Transpersonal theory formally developed within psychology through the initial definition of the field in the publishing of the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology. However, transpersonal sociology also developed with the Transpersonal Sociology Newsletter, which operated through the middle 1990s. Both disciplines have long histories, while one continues to flourish and the other, comparatively, is languishing. In order to encourage renewed interest in this important area of transpersonal studies, we discuss the history, and further define the field of transpersonal sociology, discuss practical applications of transpersonal sociology, and introduce research approaches that might be of benefit for transpersonal sociological researchers and practitioners. -
