2015 MTV #VMAS BREAKS TWITTER RECORDS AS THE MOST TWEETED MOMENT IN AUSTRALIAN TELEVSION

Sydney, Australia, Thursday, 3rd September, 2015: MTV Australia has announced that the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards received the most volume of Tweets in Australian television history, according to the Neilson TV Twitter ratings.

The VMAs, which was broadcast live from LA on Monday, accumulated 344,000 Tweets, the highest Australia has witnessed since Neilson TV Twitter ratings was established, surpassing popular shows such as The Voice, The Bachelor and MasterChef. The event was also the most Tweeted TV moment ever globally, with 47 million tweets from around the world.

“The incredible record breaking VMA tweets from our Aussie fans further enforce us as social leaders within the industry. Our MTV Australia social accounts currently have over 3 million connections and are steadily growing demonstrating our ability to connect and evolve with our youth audience.” Said Simon Bates, Vice President MTV Australia & New Zealand.

The top Tweeted VMA topics from the Australian public included Kanye West announcing that he will be running for 2020 President, Taylor Swift winning the award for Best Female Video ‘Blank Space’ and Justin Bieber tearing up on stage at the end of his performance. Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer were also amongst the most mentioned starts on Twitter from the event, along with Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj.

Across the day, MTV performed three times better than the channel average for August and ranked as the number one channel amongst 13 – 39 year olds within the entertainment competitive set.
