  • OFF Festival Katowice 2018 Announcing the First Artists We’Re Pleased to Announce the First Artists That Are Confirmed to Perform at the Next OFF Festival
OFF Festival Katowice 2018 Announcing the First Artists We’re pleased to announce the first artists that are confirmed to perform at the next OFF Festival. They’re original, they’re psychedelic and they’re kaleidoscopic: Grizzly Bear, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah performing Some Loud Thunder, John Maus and Marlon Williams are coming to Katowice in August. Get your OFF Festival passes now at a special early- bird prices. There’s no better Christmas gift than that! Grizzly Bear If there’s one band on the US indie scene today that can blaze new trails in American folk music while remaining faithful to the lessons of the Beach Boys, and that can be as catchy as they are challenging, blending jazz and art rock with pop, then that band is, without a doubt, Grizzly Bear. But it would be unfair to brand this Brooklyn quartet as a group of savvy counterfeiters: their music — a dense web of gripping and at times slightly psychedelic sonic ideas — is a purely original invention. It’s also one that’s garnered rave reviews from audiences and critics alike since their debut Horn of Plenty (2004). Grizzly Bear’s follow-up Yellow House (ranked among the top albums of 2006 by The New York Times and Pitchfork) secured their spot in the top echelons of alternative rock, while later efforts, including this year’s Painted Ruins, only reinforced their status. But as we’ll all see on a warm summer night this August, this bear’s natural habitat is the stage. John Maus His music has been described as a mash-up of punk, catchy soundtracks to ‘80s blockbusters, the unremitting poppiness of Moroder, and the spiritual qualities of Medieval and Baroque music.

  • Exploring the Chinese Metal Scene in Contemporary Chinese Society (1996-2015)
"THE SCREAMING SUCCESSOR": EXPLORING THE CHINESE METAL SCENE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINESE SOCIETY (1996-2015) Yu Zheng A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2016 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2016 Yu Zheng All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This research project explores the characteristics and the trajectory of metal development in China and examines how various factors have influenced the localization of this music scene. I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. And, this localized trajectory is influenced by the accessibility of metal resources, the rapid economic growth, urbanization, and the progress of modernization in China, and the overall development of cultural industry and international cultural communication. iv For Yisheng and our unborn baby! v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First of all, I would like to show my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Dr.

  • Measuring Music 2015 Report Acknowledgements
MEASURING MUSIC 2015 REPORT ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Measuring Music is created on behalf of UK Music and its UK MUSIC MEMBERS members to highlight the economic contribution of the music industry to the UK economy. 2015 is the third edition of the report, which was first published in 2013. When we published Measuring Music last year, Tony Clayton, then Chief Economist of the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) said: “The IPO welcomes UK Music’s collaborative research on the economic contribution of music. This excellent piece of work meets both the IPO’s Standards of Good Evidence and National Accounts standards.” We are pleased to continue to work collaboratively with the IPO on research, as well as with other relevant bodies including Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS). In particular, we are grateful to the ONS for allowing us access to the Virtual Microdata Lab (VML), which has enabled us to apply a bespoke methodology for the calculation of the music industry’s GVA. We are grateful for collaboration from all parts of the music industry with this research. Over the past two years in excess of 1,500 musicians have responded to our survey, giving us a vital and unique insight into their careers. In addition, accountants to some of the UK’s leading music acts have provided unprecedented insight into their clients’ earning structures. We have worked with all UK Music members to survey their memberships. This research would not be possible without this enthusiastic participation and vital data inputs from them. UK Music is the umbrella organisation which represents the collective interests of the UK’s commercial music industry- from artists, musicians, songwriters and composers, to record labels, LIVE MUSIC GROUP music managers, music publishers, studio producers, music • Association of Independent Festivals licensing organisations and the live music industry.

Thesis, Georgia State University, 2009. https://scholarworks.gsu.edu/communication_theses/47 This Thesis is brought to you for free and open access by the Department of Communication at ScholarWorks @ Georgia State University. It has been accepted for inclusion in Communication Theses by an authorized administrator of ScholarWorks @ Georgia State University. For more information, please contact [email protected]. RADIOHEAD: THE GUITAR WEILDING, DANCING, SINGING COMMODITY by SELENA LAWSON Under the Direction of Jeffery Bennett ABSTRACT In 2007, Radiohead released a downloadable album, In Rainbows, allowing consumers to pay what they thought the album was worth. The band responded to a moment of change in the music industry. Since then, other bands, like Nine Inch Nails and Coldplay, have made similar moves. Radiohead's capability to release an album and let the fans decide its worth relied on the image they built, which foregrounded their commodification. The historic move redefined the boundaries between art and commodity, a well know tension in popular music studies. The thesis focuses on popular music as communication in the changing industry. Using Radiohead’s album as a case study, it looks at the changing boundaries in the tension between art and commodity. The thesis examines Radiohead's performance, its mediation by the press, and what the album’s distribution method meant to the fans.
