The application process will be the same as last summer. In order to enroll your child in the Springfield Summer School Program, you will need to complete the online application and also mail in the attached enrichment application. The online application will only take a few minutes to complete. As long as you follow the steps listed below, your child will be enrolled in the courses that he or she chooses (Note: Courses are based on enrollment, which may cause courses to close or be cancelled). American Girl Adventure K. Schulz NEW Dolls Explored! Are you a fan of the popular American Girl Dolls? Are you interested in exploring the past and present while doing arts & crafts activities? Then this class is for you! We will be exploring the historical American Girls and learn to do things as they did when they lived. We will follow the adventures of the girls of the present day as well. Skills and experience will be developed as we learn about character and use our creativity in learning. Character development skills such as independence, patience, perseverance, individualism, and trust will highlight conversations. I encourage you to bring your American Girls to class and tell us about them - bring your favorite books too! K-6 8:30-9:30

Extra, Extra, Extra! Read All About It! J. Marx Can you believe all that’s happening in 2016? Would you like an opportunity to create an informative, interactive, eye-catching newspaper? Come join this fantastic journalism class to learn about and highlight the Presidential Election, the Summer Olympics, and the PGA Championship that's being held at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ! 3-8 8:30-9:30

Get Creative With Writing A. Mojka Get your “stories” out there! In this creative writing workshop, students will experience the benefits of creative expression through crafting and revising their narratives, poems, and non- fictional essays. Student will fully participate in the writing workshop process, which includes exercises to help them uncover inspiration through the evaluation of published works and to engage with others in the sharing and editing of work in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Students will gain a greater understanding of what it means to be a writer, knowledge of enhanced approaches to revising their work, and a better understanding of their own unique writing style. 4-8 9:30-10:30

Harry Potter: Welcome to Hogwarts J. Lynch You have been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Join your professor as you enter into the magical world of Harry Potter. Here you will learn to cast spells and make potions. You will get sorted into a house and earn house points to compete for the house cup. You will even get to defend your house in the Quidditch World cup! 3-8 11:30-12:30

Myths, Folktales and Legends J. Marx Students will analyze world myths, folktales, and legends. They will create arts and crafts based on the different mythical characters from each story. Students will also utilize the program "iMovie" to persuade others to question the existence of certain mysterious characters. 3-8 9:30-10:30

Research Skills for Middle School B. Balletto Research and organization skills are vital to every student's success, especially for Middle School students. Reading comprehension and information organizing abilities can impact not only their skill development, but also their academic performance. In this class, we use a variety of activities including direct textbooks, current events, pop culture, and travel to teach students the variety of ways in which to organize important information. Students will be taught Roman numeral note-taking techniques, amongst other forms of organizational skills. 5-8 8:30-9:30

Shark Tank J. Lynch Based on the hit TV show, students will create and sell their own invention. Along the way, they will learn about marketing and business by creating a company name, a logo, business cards, advertisements and commercials. This is the perfect class for a budding entrepreneur! 3-8 10:30-11:30

Script Writing K. Schultz Tired of writing in print? It's time to practice writing in Script! In this course, we will learn different techniques on how to beautifully write in cursive. By the end of this summer, you can be writing in script for next years’ class! We will practice our Script by writing poems, picture prompts, and personal narratives. This is a perfect class for students to improve their handwriting or to try something new. Let's get writing! 3-6 10:30-11:30

Summer Fun For Your Little One M. Lagemann The program provides children with a variety of planned activities, including story time, songs, games, art & crafts, special theme days. While each day is planned, there is time built in for children to just play and enjoy the lazy days of summer. PK-2 11:30-12:30

Travel the World! Geography & Exploration B. Balletto Traveling and exploration are some of the most rewarding experiences for a child. Come learn how to read and create maps and examine the world including Europe, Asia, and Africa. Students will be taught geography skills that they will carry with them throughout life. Through the use of indoor and outdoor activities, computers, video, and creative exploration, students will create memories while developing skills that will promote an interest in the world around them! 3-8 10:30-11:30

Write Your Heart Out G. Schwarzberg "Write Your Heart Out" is a course for students seeking to develop and enhance their current writing skills. Students will spend some time writing their ideas and reflections down in their own personalized Writer's Notebook in order to maintain a keepsake of inspirational ideas. Also, since the writing process can be an area of difficulty for most students and teachers assign a variety of writing tasks, including chapter summaries, research papers, essays, and narratives, this class will open students' minds to the positive outcomes when one writes. Building students' confidence and skills when attending to each step of the writing process (prewrite, draft, revise, edit, and publish) will benefit them as they are exposed to a number of different writing expectations at each grade level. Students will receive immediate, individualized feedback on their writing since it is such a unique skill learned differently by each person. 4-8 11:30-12:30

II. Math, Science & Technology

Building With Legos K. Townsend In the course, students would individually and collaboratively build lego projects that accommodate varying parameters. In the past, we’ve done units on engineering and transportions, in which we build pinewood-derby-style cars and compete for distance traveled. We also work on building representational and non-representational sculptures, and architectural pieces like skyscrapers, bridges, etc. Students also propose and vote upon challenges or parameters for each day's building. Fun With Food Science J. Greenspan During this exciting summer course, students will learn all about the different kinds of molecules that make up food like carbohydrates and proteins and how each of those molecules are important in keeping our bodies happy and healthy. In addition, students will also spend time talking about the importance of nutrition. Students will get hands on experience performing real food science experiments such as the use of antacid tablets, enzymatic browning, and many more. 3-8 9:30-10:30

Get Connected With K’Nex R. Hildebrand Do you like to build with your hands? In this class you will use K'Nex to build amusement park rides, cars, boats, airplanes and other fun and engaging designs. Test your engineering know- how by determining how fast your ferris wheel can spin, how high you can build a rollercoaster, or how fast your racecar can travel. 3-8 8:30-9:30 K-4 10:30-11:30

Intro to Computer Programming K. Townsend In the course, students would learn essential vocabulary, concepts and basic skills necessary to write computer code and build programs. In a Problem-Based-Learning (PBL) structure, students learn logic skills, mathematical operations, and theory behind how computers can solve computational problems or address challenges in artificial scenarios. Students will learn all the basics of writing their own computer code. The course would use both direct instruction and reinforcement from Khan Academy Computer Science (https://www.khanacademy.org/cs) and the Javascript-based programming software suite available for free on that website. Students would complete small problem sets based on the Javascript software there. Students will also learn code applicable for creating their own basic web sites. 3-8 8:30-9:30 iLearn iMovie 1: Introduction to iMovie M. Mirabella Interested in becoming an iMovie expert? This course is for rising 3rd – 8th grade students who are interested in learning the basic skills needed to create short films with iMovie. Over the course of four weeks, students will use Macbooks to create short films from a variety of styles and genres. By the conclusion of the course, students will be utilizing advanced iMovie skills to make impressive professional presentations. 3-8 10:30-11:30 iLearn iMovie 2: Advanced iMovie M. Mirabella Do you love iMovie? This course is for rising 4th – 8th grade students who are interested in learning the advanced skills needed to create short films with iMovie. Over the course of four weeks, students will use Macbooks and iPads to create short films of various styles and from a variety of genres. By the conclusion of the course, students will be utilizing advanced iMovie skills to make impressive, professional, and breathtaking presentations. **Course Prerequisite: This course will move at an accelerated pace. Previous experience with using iMovie is required.** 4-8 11:30-12:30

Let’s Kahoot It J. Marx Do you like trivia? Well it's time to get your game on! Join the ultimate trivia class and learn about a new topic each week. Students will have the opportunity to research topics or themes of their choice and then play a high energy, interactive, online-based trivia game against their classmates. Prizes will be awarded to our winners every Friday. 4-8 10:30-11:30

Math Arcade G. Schwarzberg Math computational fluency is one of the most important skills that a student can maintain from over the summer; however, it is also one of the most commonly regressed skills. "Math Arcade" will provide students with a fun environment where they can practice all types of math skills using games. Card games, board games, computer games, and more will be incorporated into the class so that students can increase and maintain their math proficiency for both in school and out. 3-8 8:30-9:30

Math + Art = Fun! S. Scheckman What do math and art have in common? More than you think! After examining and discussing the works of numerous famous artists, we will create our own masterpieces. Using estimation, counting, measurement, and number-sense skills, we will design projects using a variety of mediums. We will make interesting and original art while experimenting with symmetry and probability. The works of Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Georgie O'Keefe, as well as others, will be explored. K-8 10:30-11:30

Model Rocketry R. Hildebrand Do you want to launch a rocket that will rise 1000 feet in the air? If you do, this class is for you. The students in this class will learn the science behind rockets. This hands-on class will allow students to build and take home various kinds of rockets that use different methods of thrust such as air, water, elastic bands, alka-seltzer and black powder. The students will use a kit to build and launch two model rockets. The class will culminate with the students launching their rockets into the sky. 1-8 9:30-10:30 1-8 11:30-12:30

Myth Busters! S.T.E.M. A. Grobarz Be your own Myth Buster! Work through the engineering design process to solve scientific myths in order to confirm or bust them. You will create S.T.E.M. projects weekly as a hands-on fun way to engage in science, technology, engineering, and math. We will explore, question, research, and test myths just like the Myth Busters do! We will then watch episodes to see how the Myth Busters solved the scientific challenges to compare and see the true conclusions in action! 3-8 9:30-10:30

Recycle This J. Greenspan This course is all about Upcycling - taking something old and making it into something new. Students will learn about the process of recycling everyday materials and turning them into something spectacular. Each day, students will get hands on experience working with recycled materials such as plastic water bottles and newspapers to create one of a kind items. 3-8 11:30-12:30

Skills For School Success G. Schwarzberg “Summertime is learning time.” This course is designed to boost students’ preparedness for school in the areas of listening, organization, time management, and priority setting for upper elementary and middle school students. With increased amounts of rigor and expectations both inside and outside the classroom, students will be faced with many responsibilities. “Skills for School Success” will empower your child to confidently face all of his or her teacher’s expectations, complete and turn in assignments on time, evaluate the art of identifying and establishing priorities in all facets of life, and increase listening skills. 4-8 9:30-10:30

Spy Kids J. Greenspan During this course, students will learn the basics of Forensics Science and uncover the mysteries behind today’s modern spies! Students will learn about fingerprints, DNA, and will be able to search for clues to solve a mystery! 3-8 10:30-11:30

Strategic Math Games D. Campbell This course will focus on higher level thinking skills needed in mathematics. Some examples of games played would be Quirkle, Sumoku, Architecto, Izzi, Pentominoes, Tangrams, Pattern Blocks and Mega Forms. Mini-lessons will be taught to help students learn the necesseary skills to play the games and students will be placed in groups according to their abilities. The Magic School Bus Science Explorers A. Grobarz Be a science explorer aboard the Magic School Bus! In this program, we will explore science through the series, The Magic School Bus. We will read the Magic School Bus books, watch the episodes, and complete activities and experiments that relate to the science topic! At the end of the program, we will create our own Magic School Bus books based on our scientific research! PK-3 8:30-9:30

III. The Visual, Performing, and Practical Arts

Arts and Crafts V. Fortna Come have fun exploring your artistic abilities while creating original artwork and decorative craft items such as sun catchers, picture frames, jewel boxes, patriotic decorations and much more. In this workshop, students in grades pre-kindergarten through third grade will use many art materials and various mediums such as painting, drawing, coloring, constructing, cutting and decorating to express their creativity. Cooking I. Ornovitz Learn how to prepare healthy snacks, awesome cookies, and special kid-friendly recipes you can make for your family! You and your kitchen team will make and taste a new recipe every day. We will have an "Iron Chef Vegetable Cook-Off" when we prepare a delicious meal, and every dish will have veggies in it, even the desserts! Each chef will receive a cookbook with a copy of all of the recipes you make this summer. 4-8 10:30-11:30 4-8 11:30-12:30

Cooking For Kids I. Ornovitz Learn how to prepare healthy snacks, awesome cookies, and special kid-friendly recipes you can make for your family! Creating Comic Strips L. D’Angelo This is the class you have been waiting for! Come and join us to have fun creating your own comic strips. You will have the opportunity to use a wide range of drawing skills based on the creation of Anime Characters, Walt Disney Characters, and many others. I will share with you my favorite French Comic Strips of Tintin which has inspired Steven Spielberg in the creation of a great Animation movie " The Adventures of Tintin", as well as the very famous Asterix and Obelix which is part of every French home library. This is a time for you to explore and to be creative, bring your friends, work in groups or individually. You will have the opportunity to choose between drawing your comic strip, create a PPT using special effects, or other online comic strips tools to help you bring your characters to life. Debate Derby K. Schultz Can you effectively debate with another person using verbal communication? In Debate Derby, we will be debating about topics from best sports teams to the hottest trends in fashion. Sometimes our discussions can get passionate and feisty at times. Not to worry! In Debate Derby, we will understand how to handle differences in our opinions professionally and respectfully. This class is ideal for students who may be shy and are looking for the opportunity to have their voice be heard! Lets Debate! 4-8 9:30-10:30

Fairy Gardening 101 M. Lagemann Create a little magic for your own backyard!! We will explore and create our own fairy gardens. Bring your imagination and creative spirit to this hands-on class where we will build our own fairy garden including planters, doors, furniture, and accessories. Students will bring home their own fairy garden that they have created! Join us on this whimsical journey!! PK-8 10:30-11:30

Fun With Arabic F. Tawfik Middle Eastern Cruise: Students will be introduced to different culture and basic language through fun activities and cool art projects. Each week, the focus will be on exploring a different region and learning its culture, art, music and dancing. 5-8 9:30-10:30

Improvisation Actor’s Workshop B. Balletto In this workshop, students will explore the fantastic world of improvisation acting through games, skits, and challenges. Classes will be packed with opportunities to act in situations on a moment’s notice, ensuring a fun filled class with laughter and constant activity. They will play games such as “Who’s Line Is It Anyway?”, “Guess Who?”, and “Prop Masters!”. Skills and experience will be developed in improvisation, creativity, public speaking, developing character emotion, and performing in front of small audiences. 3-8 9:30-10:30

Jewelry Making S. Scheckman Are you the next Runway Star of Jewelry Making? This course will allow you to demonstrate your creativity by making jewelry such as bracelets, rings, earrings and more. A variety of materials will be used in this course. Students can make this jewelry for themselves or as gifts for their family and friends. At the end of the course, students will enjoy exhibiting their jewelry in a mini fashion show. 3-8 11:30-12:30

Just Off Broadway! – Musical Theater L. Fortna Hit the lights, cue the orchestra, the smell of the greasepaint and the roar of the crowd is here! Learn the basics of musical theater and get the experience of a live performance. Choose from a variety of themed musicals, sing a little song, do a little dance and put on a show. Come as you are and leave as a star! 2-8 11:30-12:30

Music, Games and Dances V. Fortna Students who enjoy singing, dancing, playing instruments and listening to musical stories will have lots of fun in this workshop. Traditional musical activities such as "The Itsy Bitsy Spider", "Teddy Bear", "My Playmate", "The Little Brown Jug" and "This Old Man" will be enjoyed together with friends. Plus, many new songs and games will be introduced and students will have the opportunity to create their own song book containing lyrics and pictures. PK-1 9:30-10:30

Music, Games and Dances V. Fortna Students who enjoy singing, dancing, playing instruments and listening to musical stories will have lots of fun in this workshop. Ooh, You Play(lay) Ukulele L. Fortna Bring the warm sandy beaches and cool island breezes of Hawaii to Springfield. Strum along to classic island songs, American folksongs, or make up your own with the ‘hottest’ instrument out there. No experience necessary, just the desire to relax, sit back and have some fun. Order in the Court: Mock Trial Workshop A. Herrington Students will take on the role of lawyers, witnesses and jurors to enact fictitious trials and conduct mediations while learning the basics of courtroom procedure, trial preparation, advocacy and public speaking. 4-8 8:30-9:30

This course is designed to enhance students' ability to research their own topics and present information, facts, and advice to their peers with enthusiasm. Public speaking tends to be an intimidating task, but students will quickly see how empowering it can be when given the opportunity to practice in a fun way. The goal is for students to enjoy presenting their content effectively. Sewing For Fun I. Ornovitz Learn to sew by hand and using a sewing machine when you make small pillows and other projects. You will be able to order a kit to make a stuffed animal or pillow to take home when it is finished. We will also practice embroidery stitched that you can use to decorate your clothes and other projects. 4-8 8:30-9:30

The Art of Film A. Mojka Want to watch a movie? You probably view films weekly, but have you ever really 'watched' a movie? This course will teach you how to develop literacy within the art of moving images. Students will become familiar with film vocabulary, analyze film in context, evaluate the cultural significance of film, and assess the merits of a film as a work of art. So next time you go to the movies, you can actually 'watch' the movie. 5-8 10:30-11:30

Crazy About Coloring and Painting A. Grobarz Explore your creative side! Come create your own cool coloring and painting masterpieces worthy of decorating your bedroom walls with. Each day’s session includes a warm-up, a skills clinic, and a team tournament. Floor Hockey 2016 M. Schachtel and M. Mirabella Welcome to Floor Hockey 2016! If you have an interest in team sports and/or are interested in learning more about hockey, then this course is for you! The Floor Hockey course is designed to help students both learn about the sport of hockey and team play, and practice the skills necessary for each under the guidance of Jonathan Dayton Ice Hockey coaches. Game Adventures J. David Everybody loves gym games! Enjoy learning the skills of various gym games that require hand eye coordination, strategy/communication, and teamwork. Jump Rope and Playground Games J. Telesca A great combination! Students will participate in jump rope activities such as jump bands, short, long and Double Dutch! Tricks and routines will be adapted to the student’s skill level so all can succeed! Students will also have the opportunity to play other playground activities as well. Students will design routines and increase their aerobic fitness through these great activities. PK-5 8:30-9:30

Outdoor Soccer J. David This program will give all students (from beginner to advanced) the opportunity to review the fundamentals of soccer while participating in various drills used to enhance their knowledge and skill levels of the game. Students will play multiple games during each class to reinforce the drills. This program is a great way to develop sportsmanship, promote self-esteem, and enhance an active and healthy lifestyle. 3-8 9:30-10:30

Party Planning J. Ging Students will learn the basics of party planning by creating decorations, writing invitations, generating guest lists and preparing appetizers and desserts. The class will also plan a budget and invent games and activities. At the end of each week, the students will celebrate the party that they planned. 2-8 9:30-10:30

Summer Olympics 2016 M. Lagemann Every four years, we experience the summer Olympics so let’s be part of the history! Each week you will be put on a new team and represent your country in an Olympic event. Learn and play real games the Olympians will play this summer. Don’t be afraid to earn the gold! Tape It M. Lagemann It is going to be a little sticky, but this class will definitely enhance your creativity. Using different colors and patterns of duct tape and post-it notes, we will create a variety of crafts. Enjoy making IPOD cases, bracelets, vases, pencil holders and more. PK-8 8:30-9:30

Tennis, Badminton and Net Games A. Moss Tennis, Badminton and Net Game will allow students to take part in growing sports and a sport at the high school level. The use of training nets will help develop the students’ basic tennis and badminton skills. The head coach of the boys and girls tennis programs at Jonathan Dayton High School will be the instructor. Tennis and Badminton will be instructed at a developmental level, which will progress into friendly competitive games. At first, the students will develop hand-eye coordination, which will progress into individualized skills to prepare the boys and girls for the high school tennis programs. Please provide your own tennis racquet. K-8 8:30-9:30

Here is where you will find out everything you always wanted to know and the things that you need to know to be successful at this job. You will learn how to give a bottle, feed a toddler, stay safe, as well as first aid, what to do in an emergency, and even how to entertain little ones so that you become "the best babysitter ever!" A high point is weekly visits with the summer school nursery classes to practice our skills and observe how the kids your will be babysitting for REALLY are. 5-8 11:30-12:30
