Congratulations graduates. I know this is not how you probably imagined celebrating your achievements this Fall. While the celebrations look different, your Humber family applauds your success and we look forward to the new beginnings and possibilities that await you. We are proud of your accomplishments and wish you continued success in your next adventure.

You are now part of an exclusive club of fellow Humber alumni. From the fields of business and technology to healthcare, communications, media, hospitality and the arts, our more than 265,000 alumni have been making an impact locally and around the world for over half a century. This graduating class is unlike any we have had before. Amidst the exceptional circumstances of a global pandemic and all of the unknowns it brings with it, you have risen to the challenge and you have succeeded. You have demonstrated your resilience and adaptability and are now part of the growing community of Humber alumni around the world who are leading communities to new opportunities and making a difference. At Humber, we are committed to life-long learning and academic excellence, and I hope that you’ll never stop seeking out innovation, discovery, new knowledge and ways to inspire change. The academic regalia worn by Humber’s faculty, students and administration represent centuries of tradition. The style and colour of gowns, hoods and caps is specific to individual institutions and disciplines. Faculty and administrative staff wear the academic dress appropriate to the highest credential they have earned.

The gowns, vee stoles and hoods worn by our graduates reflect Humber’s official colours of blue and gold. Graduates of Humber’s certificate and diploma programs wear a three-toned vee stole. The vee stole colours consist of antique gold, navy blue and the velvet trim associated with the discipline of the area of study. Recipients of Humber’s Ontario graduate certificates wear a gold satin hood with a navy blue stripe around the exterior trim and is lined with navy blue. Graduates of Humber’s Baccalaureate degree programs wear a hood that is three feet long. Each hood has a navy blue shell with one antique gold cord around the exterior trim and is lined with antique gold satin. The colour of the velvet trim on each hood is associated with the discipline of the degree received:

Humber has an international reputation for

In response to a growing need for skilled workers across Ontario, provincial legislation established Colleges of Ap- plied Arts and Technology in 1967 and Humber enrolled its first students that year. In the 1990s, Humber became the first college to offer Ontario Graduate Certificates, providing specialized, job-specific training to students who already held undergraduate degrees. In 2001, Humber began offering the University of New Brunswick-Humber collaborative Bachelor of Nursing (BN) degree, which is now the largest BN program in Ontario. In 2002, Humber welcomed the inaugural class of the

Humber was designated an Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities in 2003 and began offering career-focused bachelor’s degrees that integrate theory, work-integrated learning, and applied research opportunities. 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of Humber and the Ontario college system. In 2019, Humber strengthened its model of polytechnic education and industry partnerships with the opening of the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation and the establishment of the Advanced Manufacturing Skills

Amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, Humber offered its first-ever fully online term in Summer 2020. Humber offers more than 200 full-time programs divided amongst six faculties. Humber has graduated more than 265,000 alumni, many of whom have become renowned within their fields, both locally and globally.

President’s Medal The President’s Medal is presented to one graduating student in each faculty who has maintained a good overall academic record and has made a significant contribution to the faculty program by demonstrating commitment to leadership and actively participating in student life on campus, as recommended by faculty to the Senior Dean.

Board of Governors’ Achievement Award The Board of Governors’ Achievement Award is presented to one graduating student in each faculty who has achieved their academic goals or maintained a good overall academic standing while attending to significant college, community and personal responsibilities, as selected by the Senior Dean.

Governor General’s Academic Medal The Governor General’s Academic Medal is presented to the graduating student who completes a minimum of 50 per cent residency and achieves the top academic standing across all diploma and degree programs in the academic year. It was established in 1873 and is one of the most prestigious awards that can be received by a student in a Canadian educational institution for exceptional academic achievement.

Academic Award of Excellence The Academic Award of Excellence is presented to graduating students who achieve the highest honours academic standing in their program.

Students learn to take their ideas from concept to creation in Humber’s Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology. Offering programs in design, construction, advanced manufacturing, information technology and skilled trades, the faculty gives students the chance to acquire highly sought-after skills using specialized labs, equipment and facilities. On-the-job experience is emphasized through work placements. Professors highlight current trends within their areas of specialty and strive to duplicate situations that graduates will experience in their everyday working life in the classroom environment.
