Budapest, Vienna and Prague May 15-24, 2015 It has been many years since the Lyric Opera Guild took a trip to Eastern Europe. Due to popular demand we are offering the following trip in May 2015. Please note that many people have already expressed an enthusiastic interest in this trip, but our number is limited. This trip is offered strictly on a “first come first served” basis, and is priced based on early bookings which will make it less expensive than it ordinarily would be. Our deadline for a deposit is October 15, which is coming right up. But the final payment is not due until March 15, 2015, so you will have plenty of time to scrape the rest of your travel funds together! Out tour guides on this trip are Rob and Barbara Seaver of Request Italy, who have been such terrific hosts for our European trips the last three summers. Rob Seaver, as you might know, is the son of the late, great Jim Seaver of Lawrence, Kansas, one of the country's leading opera experts and a close friend of the Guild for many years. Here is our plan: Friday, May 15, 2015. Depart Kansas City and fly to Budapest, Hungary. Saturday, May 16. Arrive in Budapest, enjoy high tea and then a welcome dinner at a fine restaurant. Sunday, May 17. Enjoy an Budapest, Hungary orientation tour of Budapest in the morning and a group lunch. Tour the famed National Art Museum in the afternoon, and then enjoy a performance of Gounod’s Faust at the historic Hungarian National Opera that evening. Dario Shmunk sings the title role, with bass-baritone Gabor Bretz as Mephistopheles and famed soprano Andrea Rost as Marguerite. Monday, May 18. In the morning, enjoy a walking tour of the Castle district, including a visit to St. Matthias Church where the kings of Hungary were crowned. This day features a group lunch, then ground transportation to Vienna in the afternoon. In the evening, attend Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte in the city where he composed it, at the Wiener Volksoper (Vienna Folk Opera). Tuesday, May 19. In the morning, we will take a walking tour of historic Vienna, including a visit to Mozart’s house and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the famous cathedral of Vienna. Lunch is on your own, before we tour the world renowned Kunsthistorisches Museum. There will be a group dinner that night at a superb Vienna restaurant. Wednesday, May 20. In the morning, we will visit either the Belvedere Palace and museum or the Schönbrunn Palace. In the late afternoon, we will have a backstage tour of the famous Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), one of the great opera houses of the world. We Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) will offer an optional performance of Wagner’s Siegfried at the Staatsoper that evening. World famous Wagnerian tenor Stephen Gould sings the title role. Thursday, May 21. In the morning we will tour the Hofburg, the imperial palace of the Habsburgs, or the Albertina Museum, housing one of the the finest collection of old masters drawings in the world. After a group lunch, we will travel by private coach to Prague in the Czech Republic, where that evening we will enjoy a performance of perhaps the greatest Czech opera, Dvořák’s magical Rusalka. Wiener Volksoper (Vienna Folk Opera) Friday, May 22. We will have a walking tour of historic central Prague including the famed Wenceslas Square where Communism was overthrown in 1989. You will have time to explore Prague on your own or tour the famous Jewish quarter in the afternoon. Saturday, May 23. This morning will feature a tour of the Prague castle complex where many famous historical events occurred. We will have a farewell lunch at one of Prague’s leading restaurants, and in the evening will attend Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the historic theater where the opera had its 1787 premiere, the Estates Theatre.     Chapter 6 The Closing of the Kroll: Weimar Culture and the Depression The last chapter discussed the Kroll Opera's success, particularly in the 1930-31 season, in fulfilling its mission as a Volksoper. While the opera was consolidating its aesthetic identity, a dire economic situation dictated the closing of opera houses and theaters all over Germany. The perennial question of whether Berlin could afford to maintain three opera houses on a regular basis was again in the air. The Kroll fell victim to the state's desire to save money. While the closing was not a logical choice, it did have economic grounds. This chapter will explore the circumstances of the opera's demise and challenge the myth that it was a victim of the political right. The last chapter pointed out that the response of right-wing critics to the Kroll was multifaceted. Accusations of "cultural Bolshevism" often alternated with serious appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of any given production. The right took issue with the Kroll's claim to represent the nation - hence, when the opera tackled works by Wagner and Beethoven, these efforts were more harshly criticized because they were perceived as irreverent. The scorn of the right for the Kroll's efforts was far less evident when it did not attempt to tackle works crucial to the German cultural heritage. Nonetheless, political opposition did exist, and it was sometimes expressed in extremely crude forms. The 1930 "Funeral Song of the Berlin Kroll Opera", printed in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, may serve as a case in point.

    TURANDOT Cast Biographies Soprano Martina Serafin (Turandot) made her San Francisco Opera debut as the Marshallin in Der Rosenkavalier in 2007. Born in Vienna, she studied at the Vienna Conservatory and between 1995 and 2000 she was a member of the ensemble at Graz Opera. Guest appearances soon led her to the world´s premier opera stages, including at the Vienna State Opera where she has been a regular performer since 2005. Serafin´s repertoire includes the role of Lisa in Pique Dame, Sieglinde in Die Walküre, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, the title role of Manon Lescaut, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Maddalena in Andrea Chénier, and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Upcoming engagements include Elsa von Brabant in Lohengrin at the Opéra National de Paris and Abigaille in Nabucco at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala. Dramatic soprano Nina Stemme (Turandot) made her San Francisco Opera debut in 2004 as Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer, and has since returned to the Company in acclaimed performances as Brünnhilde in 2010’s Die Walküre and in 2011’s Ring cycle.     City Profile Budapest City Profile Budapest Introduction Budapest is the capital city of Hungary and is located in the middle of the Carpathian Basin in the north–central region of Hungary. The river Danube divides the city, which covers an area of 525 km2 with a population of 1.7 million. As the largest city in Hungary, it is the country's political, cultural, commercial, industrial, and transportation centre. The city’s population peaked in 1989 with 2.1 million. During the last two decades, this number has constantly decreased due to the urban sprawl effect. The greater commuter belt is home to around three million inhabitants (80 townships). According to the Municipal Act, Budapest has had a two-level municipal governing system since 1990, meaning there are 23 districts plus the municipality of Budapest. BKK is the transport organising authority of Budapest, whose responsibilities cover transportation along with its environmental and energy consumption aspects. Budapest signed the Covenant of Mayors in 2008 and submitted its Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) in 2011. Thus, Budapest has committed itself to cutting CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020 as compared to the data from 2005. Energy-Efficient Buildings and Districts Service buildings (non-municipal) In the decade leading up to 2020, the target is to achieve a reduction in the specific energy consumption of service buildings (e.g. office and commercial buildings) in line with those of municipal buildings, meaning a total decrease of 25%. In the next ten years, a 3-4 % increase of the combined areas of commercial, service and office buildings is expected – which currently have an estimated area of 1,500 hectares.

    Briefing Paper, 10/2019 THE BRI IN EUROPE AND THE BUDAPEST-BELGRADE RAILWAY LINK Flora Rencz Junior Researcher, EIAS October 2019 Abstract Increasing Chinese influence in Europe has been a growing source of anxiety in Brussels in recent years. This paper seeks to better understand these exacerbated fears through the case of the Budapest-Belgrade railway link refurbishment. The project is part of the 17+1 Cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). It had been announced in 2013 but was stalled on the Hungarian side until 2019 due to EU tender regulations. This paper provides an overview of the Budapest-Belgrade case’s timeline and details. It also analyses the challenges arising during the execution of the project, particularly focusing on political concerns from Brussels, feasibility issues, and the reception of the refurbishment by the Hungarian public. The paper also sheds light on how the project progressed differently on the Hungarian side as it did on the Serbian side as a non-EU member, due to the EU’s intervention. The railway link is a great case study to gain a better understanding of the BRI and the implications of China’s growing influence as a global actor for the EU and its neighbours.
