Nearly 18 miles long, the Mount Vernon Trail follows the Potomac's Virginia shoreline from Theodore Roosevelt Island (near Rossyln, Va) to George Washington's Estate located at Mount Vernon. The trail offers wonderful views of the Potomac and DC monuments. Brown Rail Trail (formally NCR Trail) - The Northern Central Railroad Trail, officially known as The Torrey C. Brown Trail, covers nearly 20 miles in Maryland, stretching from Ashland Road in Hunt Valley to the Mason-Dixon Line. The trail is 10 feet wide with a stone dust surface. The most popular activities on the trail are hiking, running, bicycle riding and horseback riding. The trail also provides access for fishing and tubing along the Gunpowder. York County Heritage Trail — A continuation of the NCR Trail once you cross over into Pennsylvania this trail then continues another 21 miles north to York, PA. There is also an operational parallel railway- adjacent to the trail, which is used as a hobbyist tourist attraction between York and New Freedom. The southern halfof the trail cuts through some nice suburban neighborhoods. As you head farther north, the terrain becomes much more urban. Food is plentiful along the way, with stops available in Severna Park and Pasadena.
