DARE: Holy Trinity College Theological Journal 103 The First Missionaries’ Work in Africa: Ivory Coast Case Study Benjamin Yavo OFM Introduction All Christians are missionaries. However, some people dedicate themselves especially for missionary activities. And through their laborious work, the Gospel reached many parts of the world. Ivory Coast, country situated in West Africa, knew Christianity through missionary work. After many trials, the first missionaries succeeded to put a strong foundation to Christianity into this country. This article will try to elaborate on the strengths and weaknesses of the first missionaries in Ivory Coast and the lessons to take from it. To do so, three parts will constitute the article. First, a brief story of the beginning of mission in this country will be given. After that, from that story the strengths and weaknesses of the missionaries will be exposed. Lastly, the lessons from it will follow. Brief Story of the First Missions in Ivory Coast Mission in Ivory Coast begins in the 17th Century. In fact, the first attempt of evangelization began in 1637 with five Capuchins who lived for a short time in Assinie (a town in the south of the country), before being swept away by diseases. The first Ivorian baptized was named Aniaba, son of a chief in Ivory Coast. Nouvelle Evangelisation gives some details explaining that in 1687 during a military and religious expedition sent by King Louis XIV of France, he was brought back to France. He received a French education and was baptized by the bishop Bossuet, with Louis XIV as godfather. In 1700, Aniaba returned to his country and immediately afterwards became pagan.

The Leaven in the Council: Joseph Cardijn and the Jocist Network at Vatican II By Stefan Robert Gigacz, LL.B., LL.M. (Legal Theory), DEA Canon Law. A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Divinity 2018 Abstract This thesis investigates the role and impact of Joseph Cardijn, founder of the Jeunesse Ouvrière Chrétienne (Young Christian Workers) movement, and the jocist network of bishops and periti at the Second Vatican Council. It adopts a longue durée approach, locating Cardijn within a tradition of Catholic social thought and action that developed in the wake of Europe’s nineteenth century industrial and democratic revolutions. It highlights the influence of the Lamennais School, and Marc Sangnier’s Sillon movement as sources for his work. Secondly, it traces the influence of Cardijn, his theology and methods over the half century prior to the Council, particularly the well-known see-judge-act method, which formed part of his “Three Truths” Christian dialectic. It also documents the emergence of a global network of JOC and/or Specialised Catholic Action chaplains experienced in these methods, many of whom would become key conciliar actors. Thirdly, it examines the role at Vatican II played by Cardijn, the jocist-formed bishops and periti, as well as several lay leaders from the movement, who became lay auditors. It particularly examines Cardijn’s role in the Preparatory Commission on Lay Apostolate and its successor the conciliar Lay Apostolate Commission in the drafting of the Decree on Lay Apostolate, Apostolicam Actuositatem, and the Doctrinal Constitution Lumen Gentium, as well as the impact of his book, Laïcs en premières lignes, published in English as Laymen into Action.

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA On the Christological, Ecclesiological, and Eschatological Dimensions of Priestly Celibacy in Presbyterorum Ordinis, Sacerdotalis Caelibatus and Subsequent Magisterial Documents A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology and Religious Studies Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Sacred Theology © Copyright All Rights Reserved By Gary Selin Washington, D.C. 2011 On the Christological, Ecclesiological, and Eschatological Dimensions of Priestly Celibacy in Presbyterorum Ordinis, Sacerdotalis Caelibatus and Subsequent Magisterial Documents Gary Selin, S.T.D. Director: Paul McPartlan, D.Phil Magisterial teaching on priestly celibacy prior to the Second Vatican Council was somewhat restricted in scope because of its reliance on two fundamental arguments: the superiority of celibacy over marriage and the need for the priest to maintain ritual purity. This view of priestly celibacy, as useful as it was, did not utilize the full substance of the Catholic theological tradition in this area. The document, Presbyterorum Ordinis (1965), of Vatican II presented a richer and more ample teaching on priestly celibacy that was largely organized around a threefold scheme, highlighting the christological, ecclesiological, and eschatological dimensions of celibacy, respectively. Pope Paul VI, in Sacerdotalis Caelibatus (1967), contributed to the further development of the scheme by using it as an organizing principle in his presentation of the Catholic understanding of priestly celibacy. This study aims to evaluate magisterial teaching on the threefold dimension of priestly celibacy as introduced in Presbyterorum Ordinis and Sacerdotalis Caelibatus, to explore its origins, and to analyze its influence on subsequent magisterial teachings.

While in no way condoning the civil disturbances and violence that has occurred, Archbishop McCarthy pointed out that in spite of several years of improved legislation and superficial change, the underlying causes of social unrest such as pover- ty and injustice are as firmly entrenched as ever.
