  • Fareed Zakaria Commencement Address Thank You So Much
Fareed Zakaria Commencement address Thank you so much President Faust, Fellows of the Corporation, Overseers, Ladies and Gentlemen, and graduates. To the graduates in particular, I have to tell you, you're way ahead of me already. I never made it to my commencement, either from College or graduate school. I went to college south of here, in a small town called New Haven, Connecticut, and well, I celebrated a bit the night before the ceremony. The honest truth is, I slept through much of my Commencement. Then, after I had finally made in to Harvard for graduate school, I took a job before I had finished my Ph. D. and wrote the final chapters while working in New York. I couldn’t get away from work for Commencement, and I got my degree in the mail. So, 19 years later, it is a great honor to receive, in person, a Harvard degree. Harvard was, for me, a revelation. Contrary to the conventional wisdom on this campus, it is possible to receive a fine education at Yale, and I did. But Harvard’s great graduate programs have an ambition, energy, and range that, for me, made it a dazzling, electric experience. Getting a Ph. D. involves many hours of grueling work but, if you do it right, also many hours of goofing off with friends, acquiring new hobbies and interests, and working your way through the great resources here – from the libraries to cafes. I fully availed myself of these opportunities and the time spent not working (in a formal sense) was as valuable as the hours in seminar rooms.

  • Political News Election
HTTP://WWW.UPSCPORTAL.COM POLITICAL NEWS ELECTION COMMISSION AT 60 After overseeing 15 general elections to the Lok Sabha, the Election Commission of India, in its diamond jubilee year, can with justifiable pride claim to have nursed and st rengthened the electoral processes of a nascent democracy. The successes have not been consiste nt or uniform, but over the last six decades the ECI managed to make the worlds largest democratic p rocess freer and fairer. One of the instruments of this success is surely the Model Code of C onduct. D esigned to offer a level playing field to all political parties, it has been used to neu tralise many of the inherent advantages of a ruling party in an election. Although the model code wa s originally based on political consensus and does not still enjoy statutory sanction, it served as a handy tool for placing curbs on the abuse of the official machinery for campaigning. While ther e have been complaints of excess in the sometimes mindless application of the model code, th e benefits have generally outweighed the costs. After the Election Commission was made a three-member body, its functioning beca me more institutionalised and more transparent with little room for the caprices of an o verbearing personality. The diamond jubilee is also an occasion for the ECI to look at the challenges ah ead, especially those relating to criminalisation of politics and use of money power in elections. Neither of these issues is new. What is clear is that the efforts of the Commission to t ackle them have generally lacked conviction and have not yielded any significant results.

  • Assessment of Waterlogging in Sriram Sagar Command Area
CS(AR) 202 ASSESSMENT OF WATERLOGGING IN SRIRAM SAGAR COMMAND AREA \ e ana We Trans! NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HYDROLOGY JAL VIGYAN BHAWAN ROORKEE - 247 667 (U.P.) INDIA 1995-96 PREFACE India has very large and ambitious plans for the development of irrigation and, which are indeed very essential for diversifying agriculture as also for increasing and stabilizing crop production. It is expected that when the various irrigation projects are completed, irrigation will be practiced over, at least double the present area. This is what it should be if the country has to make economic progress quickly. But if the intelligent use of water is not pre-planned, the dreadful history may repeat itself with all its attendant havocs of seepage, rise in water table, widespread waterlogging and salinity. Irrigated agriculture instead of ensuring prosperity and economic stability may threaten the very security of the'land. Waterlogging throws a challenge to irrigated agriculture. The success depends how we take up that challenge and save our national heritage, the soil, from deterioration. Irrigation projects involving interbasin transfer of water without adequate drainage has disrupted the equilibrium between the ground water recharge and discharge resulting in accretions to the ground water table. After commissioning of the Sriram Sagar Irrigation Project in 1970, there was a general rise in grOund water table. The Sriram Sagar command area faces problems of waterlogging resulting from over irrigation & seepage losses through distributory system. This study is an attempt to assess the areas affected by waterlogging and areas sensitive to waterlogging in the Sriram Sager command area using Indian Remote Sensing Satellite data.
