Expectations

This is a 4-credit class; it requires extensive work and practice—learning a language requires a significant time commitment. You must study vocabulary and grammatical structures and practice the material covered. Good study and reading comprehension skills are essential. • We recommend that you devote a minimum of three hours per credit hour, per week, to assignments to ensure your success in this course. (For example: 4 credits x 3 hours = 12 hours per week minimum). • Assignments & due dates are posted in advance in Connect and Canvas; enter these dates into your calendar. • If you cannot complete the course with a passing grade, be sure to file a withdrawal form to officially withdraw from the course. If you are concerned about your GPA, or the impact of your grades on scholarships, financial aid, graduation, etc., please plan accordingly. In this class, grammatical concepts are covered as homework, via videos in CONNECT (part of the eBook) and these concepts are practiced and applied in other assignments.

Technology Policy

This is an ONLINE class. Students need reasonable computer skills, like how to use a microphone to record and post assignments, how to troubleshoot, and navigate the eBook. Neither the instructor, the eBook, nor Canvas are infallible. If a homework question is not working, move on to the next one and contact CONNECT support to get a ticket #. • The eLearning Readiness course is mandatory. (See Canvas home page) • Questions and problems concerning college computers must be directed to the Computer Commons in Estrella Hall: 623-935-8150. A 24/7 Maricopa Canvas help desk is available online. • Questions and problems related to our eBook or McGraw Hill Connect should be reported to Connect customer support: make sure your computer meets Connect’s minimum requirements, and, when you contact tech support, write down your ticket #; this ensures your request for help is documented and can be tracked/ reviewed, if needed. Students must be proactive in ensuring they are skilled in Canvas and Connect in order to complete all assignments on time. Technology excuses for late or incomplete assignments will not be accepted.

Attendance & Participation Policy

Attendance /participation in an online language course is defined as consistent engagement with (and completion of) course activities throughout the term. Students must complete work individually, with a partner, or in groups, as assigned. Failure to complete 3 or more consecutive assignments, on time, will result in the student being dropped from the class.

Your instructor will use CANVAS to communicate important announcements, updates and changes to the syllabus. To communicate with your instructor, you must also use Canvas (a link to your Inbox is located on the top right corner of your screen). Once you click on the icon to compose a message, you can select the recipients: your instructor, select classmates, or the entire class. • If you send a message to your instructor via Canvas, you can expect an answer within two business days.

Canvas Notification Preferences, Netiquette & Respect for Others

• CANVAS Notification Preferences allow you to select how and when to be notified (via email, text message, twitter or Facebook) when there's an announcement or a message sent from within Canvas .Click here for a tutorial.

• Students are required to follow good netiquette when communicating in the discussion boards and virtual office hours. "Netiquette" is network etiquette, the do's and don'ts of online communication. If you add a picture or graphic to your Canvas profile, make sure the image is suitable for the learning environment.

Where to Seek Help

If you need assistance, seek help. If you wait until you fall behind to seek help, it may be too late for you to catch up.

• Your eBook includes video grammar tutorials you can access anytime, anywhere, online. • Your instructor has included a Students Supporting Students forum in CANVAS, under the Discussions tab, to create a student support network. You can post questions about the class, ask for assistance, and arrange for times to meet or talk with one another. If you post a question and do not receive an answer within 48 hours, contact your instructor via Canvas. Student Success: Self-regulated Learning & Grit

Researchers have found that self-regulation and grit are indicators of academic (and personal) success. Self-regulation, in a nutshell, is the individual’s ability to address issues that can interfere with learning. This is a skill that can be learned and developed. Here are some tips: • In order to self-regulate, one must become aware of his/her strengths and weaknesses and factors that contribute to or hinder learning. • Learn about your learning (what helps YOU learn better? Underlining, repeating, writing, reading?) • Learn to manage your time and identify good learning environments. (Increase your chances to succeed by planning for contingencies, chunking assignments into smaller tasks, staying ahead; minimize distractions) • Learn when and how to access resources to help you succeed • Learn to set goals and manage your emotions to improve your learning (Anxiety sometimes prevents students from learning- if this is an issue, consider visiting EMCC’s Counseling department)

Angela Duckworth is an internationally acclaimed academic who conducts research on grit & self-control. She defines grit as “the tendency to sustain interest in and effort toward very long-term goals,” and self-control as “the voluntary regulation of behavioral, emotional, and attentional impulses.”
